yeah i agree. it just bugs me a little bit that they see fit to stick ridgedly to one rule and blatantly disregard others out of convienince.

i say just be honest and say, well yeah the AF were against it but we've gone against them before, but we're going with them now because it suits us and where we want the show to go.

or else people are right and that poor AF advisor is locked up somewhere. you would have to wonder though, maybe when they said 'hey, we've got this new character, and he's done this and got this, and here's a few scripts we've got for an idea of what we'll have him doing, and while we're at it, he's the same rank as the leader of the team, but we've written her out for a few episodes in this way so that we can have him be the big hero this year. if anyone questions us we'll just say that they're co-leaders because they have the same rank. but he doesn't have to listen to her if he doesn't want to, cos that'll make him look really cool!'
and then the AF advisors head exploded.

ya know what, that seems like the more likely explanation for where she is these days. thats probably what happened.

emeralds are probably more valuable than diamonds since it's very, very, very difficult to get one that doesn't have flaws and inclusions in it

emeralds are just green sapphires, just like rubies are red sapphires. IIRC, chemically they're the same, just different colors.

dark green, clear emeralds are priceless

the issue with what orlin made sam...since emeralds are so rare, every one is 'known', especially one the size of a baseball

she could never sell it...not unless she found someone in the underground to cut it u p into littler ones, and even then it'd be hard

it'd be like 'finding' a lost Monet or Picasso. People know most/all that exist so any new find is treated with the utmost skepticism

I think it was a case of

"We've got this new guy. We want him to be the leader of SG-1."

          "What about Sam?"

          "What about her?"

"She's already the leader of SG-1."

"Darn, she is, isn't she? Okay we'll have to, I don't know... transfer her or something."

"Why can't we just keep Sam as leader and have the new guy as second in command? It'd make a lot more sense."

"Because." *pause* "Now about the new character. The fans'll love him, he's really great. We need a big hero as our star."

"I don't know about that. People seem to like the characters we have. They mightn't want a new guy coming in and taking over..."

"I know, we'll give him the CMOH. Everyone'll love him if we do that."

"Don't you think that we should talk to the Air Force advisor about this?"

          "Nah, I'm sure it's okay."

It would have been interesting to see if Sam had conveniently disappeared for a few episodes at the beginning of Season Nine, even if Amanda Tapping had been available to work.

Since Sam's absence for the first five episodes need not have resulted in a loss of command, I must conclude that the goal was to push Mitchell into place as the leader, hewo and undisputed star, no matter what.

Just wait for Sam to end up assigned to SG-22. Joe did mention that, at one point. The writing's on the wall.

They'd probably think that one of Sam's ancestors (or Sam herself) was a jewel thief or that she was a con artist.

I'd be okay with that as long as Daniel and Teal'c transferred with her and the new SG-1 were lost on their first mission. A superstitious higher-up will conclude that it is unlucky for anyone else to operate under the name SG-1 and SG-22 will resume their former designation.

or perhaps they just would have had her working in the labs of the sgc, and they might have brought cam in as a full bird colonel so that he'd have to be the leader of the team regardless due to rank.

whatever happened to their plans for "major mitchell". i'd like to hear the excuse for changing that.

sam still had some fantastic leadership presence in season 9 though. she may not have been officially in charge and giving orders, but she was as much a team leader as mitchell. more so even considering how well she played it.

she always seems to appear to have a bigger role than she really does. even when she's given a smaller role, or less scenes, she always seems to stand out. she's always more memorable to me than most other actors.

i remember her from her guest role on the x-files clearly even though she was only in a few scenes and it wasn't even really about her. no offense to teryl rothery, cos i love her and i think she's a great actress, but i had to go back and look at her episode of the x-files again after finding out she was in it. and she had a bigger role than AT did. the only other actor who i found as memorable in a guest part on XF was tony todd now that i think of it.

and she only had a couple of scenes in the mini series "traffic", but she really did stand out in that too.

we really are so lucky that AT plays sam, otherwise some of the showrunners might have been able to make her a background character by now. which would be a big shame because she really is one of the most interesting and best characters in television, and especially in sci fi.

i'm just babbling now, so i'll do you all a favour and shut up.

Well I'm not sure if these are entirely correct as there were a few that were very difficult to determine with the photo I had of Mitchell's ribbons, but this is a good guestimate until someone else posts otherwise. I believe Sam has received four of these ribbons. Obviously not the Purple Heart.
                      Spoiler:

                      Air Force Achievement Medal
                      Air Force Outstanding Unit Award
                      National Defense Service Medal
                      Armed Forced Expeditionary Medal*
                      Global War on Terrorism Medal*

                      Air Force Expeditionary Medal
                      Air Force Longevity Service Award
                      Air Force Training Ribbon

*Really unsure about these two as I can't really find any ribbon that looks like the ones Mitchell has.

I have write ups on all of these ribbons should anyone wish to read them, but it's a very long list and I didnt want to bombard several posts with descriptions that didn't pertain to Sam.

The US flag isn't necessarily flying 'backwards'. The flag patch on our soldiers' uniforms are on their right side where it looks like it's backwards, when in actuality, it's portrayed as someone moving forward and the flag in flowing in that direction. If the patch were in the 'correct' position - or as it's shown on television, that would mean that the solider was retreating and our flag is never shown in such a direction. The flags on all airplanes are in that same design.

Not if they wanted to stick to the idea that Mitchell was ten in 1981. He'd have to be at least forty-one or forty-two instead of thirty-four or thirty-five.

I think that Sam's leadership abilities and presence show even more next to Mitchell's lack of same. I get the feeling that even though Mitchell may be the official leader, Sam will always be the one that Daniel, Teal'c and quite a lot of the officers at the SGC will instinctively turn to for guidance and leadership.

Sam has won their respect and, more importantly, their trust but while Mitchell seems to have been given the benefit of the doubt at first, he does not seem to have won their confidence and does not seem likely to do so.
