    i loved that ep!

to remind my fellow samandans, it takes place after 'desperate measures'.

all the testing and such that those doctors did on sam took their toll. at first, sam was fine, but over a few weeks, she started feeling off and started feeling pain. it seemed to focus on her lower back, which just happened to be where most of the testing was done (spinal taps). when sam went to janet about the pain, janet gave her pain killers. but sam adjusted to the dosage, so janet upped it. then janet warned sam that if she stayed at that level, she would become addicted to them. so sam pulled back. but the pain didn't. so sam resumed. without janet knowing.

sam falls down. the pain is too much. the meds are either wiping her out or not working enough. and when she tries to pull back on the meds, the pain starts cutting into her and/or the withdrawl starts.

    this was a great ep!

okay, this was an ep i *wanted* to see.

Thoughts? Yes, No.... bugger off Myrth you git?

There's another bad fic being written in the BJC right now, I don't know how it would work out writting one on this thread, since it is a fast moving thread

I do not find it ‘fun’ to see women written as inadequately attired floozies played for prurient s******s, their minds firmly and narrowly fixed on sex and gold, spotted at long intervals by little prickings of conscience as inadequate as their costumes. In fact, I find such writing, and the resulting character, thoroughly offensive, to myself, to the traditions of Stargate SG-1, to women in real life, and women as portrayed in the genre of science fiction. .
This is a great post. Says it all and I think there is nothing left that needs to be said. Well done and thankyou for posting this - I'm out of green for you though!

The sig is by ToasterOnFire and the quote is from Shadowmat. I thought it was great, it really says so much about TPTB and their decisionmaking in certain regards, so I asked to use it too.

FOrmerhost, unless and until we actually get some commentary that's about Sam, how about you keep your comments and announcements in the Vala thread, where they are the most appropriate. They certainly are not here and are definitely OFF TOPIC.

Other folks, if you want to discuss these commentaries, take the discussion to the threads that FormerHOst has created.

If folks want to debate vala, well there is a vala discussion thread in addition to the wow thread, take it there.

This is SAm's thread. the ONLY thread on this forum that's dedicated to the character and actress alone.

And it is going to STAY the Sam Thread.

If you see any off-topic posts, please, report them. So that all the mods know about them and can come in here and police them since, apparantly, I'm not to be listened to now and ignored....seeing as how i've been trying to keep this thread on topic all weekend and keep getting ignored.

We've never had to police this thread stringently before, but it seems that we have so many disrespectful and disobedient rule breakers in there that we now have to come down with an iron fist.

Keep this thread on topic or posts will be deleted.

Sorry Sky I posted before I read this!!

I agree. that's what drew me to sam in the first place. She behaves with honor and dignity and in a way that only generates respect for her as a person and as a woman.

she behaves the way most women behave and i think that her actions should be applauded. She is a fantastic role model and a break from the male image that, to get ahead, a woman must sacrifice her dignity and morals and only gets ahead if she's
                  a) using sex in one way or another
                  b) lying, cheating, tricking the males

That is one reason that sam is such a great character. she's avoided the pitfalls and cliches and stereotypes that males tend to put upon women

Stargate did not need its own permanently resident comedic sexual cliché and ultra-convenient font of illegal connections and knowledge, her existence is, in my opinion, evidence that the show has de-evolved, going from being something a little different: smart, well-written science fiction without spaceships or the pleasure slaves of Gor, a show that valued science and scientists, set in the here and now, a show where the US Air Force was routinely depicted as an organization of high ideals, intense commitment, and deep dedication to noble goals, an organization that prized and rewarded intelligence and competence, and produced outstanding men and women and results in the process; now…
Thanks for saying the bolded piece. In some parts in RL, the AF has a general stereotype of “laziness” i.e. that it’s the easiest of the armed forces to get into and that the Academy was easy. I enjoyed that the show put a positive spin on this particular branch and the type of men and women (albeit fictional) it has produced.
                    <more snippage… sorry! >

……while a female character like Sam, who is brilliant, strong, honorable, responsible, professional, dedicated, forthright, compassionate, creative and an overall person of integrity, is demoted, discounted as “being finished”, relegated to the background, and generally depicted as the butt of jokes from the ‘cool kids’ and the joyless drudge to whom the dull, boring, responsible, thankless and inglorious tasks in her unit go as a matter of course…...
I know Sam is the kind of character I’d want to have on my team, on my side, in my unit. And I’d always be trying to show my appreciation for that kind of dedication, ability and teamwork. When you get someone of that caliber consistently performing like that you do what you can to keep them happy and make sure they have the environment and tools that they need to succeed.

Though I can tell you from experience that when you're the one who’s being rewarded for that kind of dependability and success, being that way doesn’t help your stress level as you really do start to feel dumped on no matter how much praise and 'thank you's you get.

Wonder what Sam’s doing for stress relief these days…. Think the cycle is getting a workout? Or think maybe she’s doing more aggressive adrenaline-pumping kinds of things to work out her frustrations these days?

I think a lot of that has to do with how adamant AT has been about that. She wasn't overboard about how much she didn't like it, but it would seem that she made comments every now and again - long before Claudia Black and Ben Browder's introduction - that kinda suggested how she feels about those kind of characters. She did NOT like Anise, for instance (though she made sure to say that she DID like the actress who played her ).

With what little input the powers have given the actors, it would seem that AT made sure to let them know, in some way, that she didn't want to be the one with the big boobs popping out of her shirt, etc. I think that's awesome. Out of all of the things an actor has to fight for or against, that's probably the biggest accomplishment for a woman. And it never seemed to be a huge priority by TPTB prior to Season Seven. I'm sure that made her fight that much easier. It's too bad they've reassessed their priorities, though.

Yep. And where some (even Jack! ) might consider Sam boring and dull because she stuck to her moral code ('less she was under the influence of an alien virus or drink) (See: season 1 ), I know I've appreciated seeing a woman stick to her moral guns. ('Course I know she's hiding a wicked sense of humor under that mild-mannered façade... )
