I thought I'd post this because although it's not entirely Sam related, I remembered a conversation we had a while ago about how tying the King Arthur stuff into the Ancient storyline was just complete randomness and madness.
Anyway, I'm driving over to Glastonbury this week (Still find it funny how they say it on Stargate!) and was just looking up some stuff on what there is to see over there, when I hit upon a whole history of Avalon and everything, and I thought the following was very interesting.
"The Glastonbury Tor of Avalon is thought to be a remnant of Atlantean Civilisation as well as the burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere". I never knew about the Atlantean thing, so the SG1 link there does have some basis in real mythology.
Anyway, I did see talk about Avalon being the home of the faeries. I'd like to see them get that into SG1 Actually... maybe I should stop joking about these things.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's book, 'Ancestors of Avalon', has something similar. The stone circle on the Tor was built by a group from Atlantis who escaped the Sinking and traveled to Avalon.
Dang the forum. Had logged in about 2 hours ago and had been reading the thread and started to make this reply then when I went to post it, the system said I needed to log in. Ehhrrmm... like I couldn't have been posting if I weren't already in... Thankfully when I hit the back button the post was still there & I saved it in WORD. Funny thing is the forum'd let you sign in, but you couldn't get beyond the main forum page. Click anywhere & you got the database error message...
Ah well... working now...

what has always made sam such a good and strong character is because she didn't fall into this sexist trap. She wasn't there to bare her cleavage or to hit on/sleep with the guys. She wasn't there for window dressing or to fill out the cat suit.
She was strong and smart and intellilgent and used her natural skills to earn her way in the world by being a strong, smart and intelligent person that didn't feel the need to play the 'i'm a woman' card. her gender was immaterial to who and what she was. She was an air force officer that just happened to be a woman. She wasn't the woman created and crafted to pander to the shallow mores of the hormonally charged set
Sam is 'real' in that she represents the millions of us women that make our way in the world on our skills in the office...not by tricking the boys with a smoke and mirrors cleavage show augmented with innuendo and quippage
Bravo for some great thoughts here.
I probably came to watch SG1 on a regular basis when S7 new eps were starting to air here in the states. (I didn't come to fandom, or realize that there were first run eps being shown Friday nights until near the end of S7 and joined on-line fandom about the same time.)
I enjoyed the team interaction, the way they bounced off one another, the charisma and compatibility the ensemble cast had - and chemistry lightning like that doesn't strike very often, so I knew this was something to watch and cherish.
And cherish it I have, especially this character named Sam. As I began to place where the eps were in chronological order, I admired even more this character who made so many things seem effortless and natural. Even though professionally no one, not even the men who knew her better than most and cared for her on her team, realized how hard won that naturalness was.
It was wonderful, and IMOHO a testament more to the actress who portrays her than to the writers who wrote her, to see a female character who could be determined, kick-butt and an accomplished soldier but still be full of compassion, gentleness, and love for others.
To be full of honor, duty, and integrity, and not just because she was in the armed services, but because that's who she *was.* To be full of ability and intelligence, and beauty, and not just the outside beauty, skin deep, but more importantly, the internal beauty of soul.
Though my gut tells me that Sam probably was originally intended to be written differently or have a different role to play in the SG universe, I'm very thankful they cast Amanda and that she took the character and turned her into so much more than they'd probably intended her to be. Thank you again for bringing her to life and making her your own. Kudos! (((((Amanda)))))
(and to echo what Kat said about 10-15 posts ago - if you've just come to SG fandom in season 9 and you like what you see in Sam now, please, please, please, if you are able to, through cable TV or DVD's, please watch Sam in the earlier seasons. It is such a wonderful experience to watch and grow with her as she comes into the program, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, eager to finally work in the program that she'd helped get off the ground and to see her grow as she makes mistakes along the way, mistakes balanced by successes until she is what you see now - a seasoned warrior, a skilled scientist and competent leader.) JMO humble opinion and suggestion, of course.

yeah. sam walked in very gung ho, very prepared to meet a 'you woman, me man, get two steps behind me where you belong'...and found a co, well two co's that saw beyond her gender and saw the officer and person beneath
they allowed her to grow, both in skills and confidence.
notice how, after the first eps or two, jack and hammond did what sam told them to do? She ws the expert and they, despite outranking her, knew that and listened to her, the one with the knowledge and experience.
so much different then than now.
now....well landry hasn't really dissed her,but we really haven't had a good tech moment in s9, everything has been one idiotic treasure hunt after another.
and cam???? well i get the feeling that cam humors her...then does what he wants to do. And sam, likely more than a little cynical after what happened with the team, just isn't in the mood to fight it.
even in real life, when you watch 'incompetant male' get promoted over your, more qualified head, you have to accept that sometimes you just an't fight the 'good old boys' network, so you don't.
you just sit backc and, if you're lucky, wait for mister incompetant to totally stuff things up...and hope that somene cares enough to notice and fix things
