That's fine, you are free to discuss whatever you wish; however, I made my original comments due to the fact that I've spoken with many older posters of this thread who have simply stopped posting because they no longer enjoy dealing with the constant heated debates that do not deal with Sam at all. I also have spoken with several new people who feel very uncomfortable posting their opinions simply because they enjoy what they are seeing this season. The reason I personally loved Samanda was because it was a safe haven of sorts. A place to come and chat without feeling as if I would be belittled for what I said or have to deal with people bashing a character I love. I understand that many of us are very unhappy with the way things have been going this season and I believe that everyone has the right to voice their opinions, I was just asking that people try to keep on topic.

Which means, don't post huge comments bashing another character or praising another character and then adding a brief bolded statement at the bottom of the post saying how much you love Sam in order to keep the post on topic. If you wish to compare Mitchell's leadering skills to Sam's, go for it, but if you spend your entire post discussing what a boob Mitchell is and how you wish he would just die and disappear or how Vala is the bomb and how you can't wait to see her again in 5wks 3days and 42mins, then this is really not the appropriate place to be discussing these opinions. I'm not asking people to stop expressing themselves, I'm only asking that everyone take other people's opinions into consideration and remember that this is in fact a Sam thread.

*I am not directing this point at MG, she was simply the post I choose to quote regarding this subject. I admit I am just as bad as everyone else when it comes to posting off-topic. It is definitely something I need to work on as well.*

Hehehe, well, I'd like to think that I'd never intentionally belittle anyone on the thread anyway, so I think I'm okay in that regard. But we've had so much controversy lately over what we can post, what we should post, what we might want to avoid posting, I'm dizzy.

At first, I was of the mind that we might as well just all try to err on the side of kindness (as the motto maintains) when it comes to pretty much everything. But there are so many folks who really want a "friendly place to vent", that I've since figured we might as well all just agree to stay civil to one another while stating whatever truths we honestly feel apply regarding the series and the characters.

Old posters, new posters, happy folks, critical folks, someone's going to feel slighted no matter what topic of conversation gets censored, so my concession (in my own head) was - so long as we're all here to chat about Sam Carter and keep it civil, then why not just be liberal and let everyone say whatever they need to say. If we want to chat about Sam in comparison to another character, why not? Wanna be critical of that other character in relation to Sam Carter? Go ahead. Want to profess one's undying adoration for that other character? Jump on in.

So long as we respect one another and keep the conversation academic (above personal jabs and deliberate personal innuendo), then no one need feel belittled by whatever ends up discussed, because it'll be ideas we're talking about and not the personal integrity of the people doing the posting here anyway.

      'MHO.

I agree. You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Yes this is Sam's a Great Character thread and I have acknowledged that I am currently, have been and will likely continue to be, very down on this show but when I discuss Mitchell I am also discusisng Carter and the fact that, even if not stated directly, I think she is a hell of a better soldier and leader then Mitchell is as written and I do not know why I should not be able to discuss my opinions on how I think Mitchell's behaviour diminishes him, his teammates and the show. Carter is clearly a better leader and discussion of the Mitchell debacle is related . . .

Well anyway - I am not really sure what I want to say but I do not post as often simply because I am down on the show in general and don't want to bring all of you down but whenever I do post anymore I feel guilty about it so I come even less and I start to restrict myself more to the anti-threads and the episode threads, I guess I just feel that since I am a supporter of Carter (and have been for many years now and it really is one of the few reasons I still watch at all, besides waiting in the vain hope for the TEAM aspect to retrun) I should be able to vent (at least once in awhile) and I should be able to discuss what is wrong, IMO, with Mitchell's character in relation to why Carter is so much better as the leader.

Thats' it - sorry if I have offended anyone - I'm tired, RL is hectic and I just do not like feeling guilty for feeling bad that one of my favorite characters is being made to suffer for such a poorly written, unprofessional, immature character who does not deserve to be co-leader of SG1, he could not touch Carter with a 100 foot pole she is so far ahead of him in so many ways.
I'm with you on why it is appropriate to discuss Cam's behavior in this episode on this thread. You're not on an anti-Cam tirade, you're talking about the contrast with Sam and the impact on Sam of Cam's behavior. My 2 cents.

LOL, y'know, personally? I'm gonna say whatever I feel the desire to say anyway, I think, and I expect most of the rest of us are too - no amount of erudite discussion regarding the pros and cons of said discussion is really going to change that. So maybe this whole topic is moot?

(I don't like Cameron Mitchell on SG-1 this season. He's written far too immaturely for his rank and station, I don't buy into his supposed "old friendship" with Sam, and he comes across way OTT as a character. John Crighton was a little crazy in Farscape, I could accept that. I don't think Cam Mitchell is supposed to be crazy, and if he is, I disagree with that fundamentally. There. I said it. Neener neener neener. )

I watched it last night too and love Sam's moments in the episode. She counts to three, put doesn't put her hand in, then ok on 4-- 4!-- and she grabs the larvae. The hand grenade scene is great. She pulls Daniel out of the way (he was still in damsel in distress mode that early in the show), and throws the hand grenade in a totally believable way.
Oh, and her pleased look when Teal'c calls them "warriors of great cunning and skill." Lots of moments that make you love Sam. And she has a great rapport with Daniel too.

Oh, I cannot for the life of me remember which early season six episode it was I was watching the other day where Sam actually had a line that included the words: "I daresay..." (and it was serious conversation, not some weird jokey line)

I just about spewed my diet coke all over the TV. Is it just me, or are the words "I daresay..." not A REALLY WEIRD choice for a Sam Carter line??? It was kind of like a couple of times when I've read fanfic and Sam's said the word "Whilst". It's a Brit-ism, I know, but it's totally not something most Americans or even Canadians say in casual conversation.

                LOL,

I know the seen you mean, but can't think of the episode either. It was something like " And I daresay we're not out of danger yet." It made sense but sounded pretty archaic. Maybe Message in a Bottle? Now this will bug me--can anyone name the episode? Please?

I think we have done well in maintaining an environment open to civil discussion. As much as we may disagree, we do not engage in personal attacks on each other. For me that's a lot of what Hic Comitas Regit stands for. As much as we like to gush about Sam and AT, I don't know that we should feel the need to self censor posts that are critical of the show and *only* gush. Still, it's no fun if we *only* complain. I continue to catch the older episodes on SciFi, so I'm happy to relive the "glory days" in between discussion of new episodes which are not universally popular.

Well, the only one that comes to mind is
                      Spoiler:
                      Redemption (part 2).
In the scene where Sam explains her idea of getting the Stargate out of the SGC and into space by mounting it on an X-302.
                      HAMMOND
                      Well done, Major.
                      CARTER
It wasn't all my idea, Sir, and I dare say it's not done yet.
                      HAMMOND
                      Right.
That's the only one I remember right now, and only because after GUP was on, I watched Redemption and 48 hours for the classic Sam/MacKay banter.
                      Spoiler:
                      McKAY
Huh! So it is. I'm mortally allergic to citrus. One drop of lemon and I could die. I'll have whatever that is.
                      (to Carter)
                      Gotta be very careful.

                      [snip]
                      Spoiler:
                      CARTER
That's why they came up with the forty-eight hour deadline, isn't it? You told them Teal'c would already be dead!
                      McKAY
                      That's why it's called a deadline.
                      CARTER
                      (Getting up in anger)
                      God! You're a joke.
                      McKAY
Wish I didn't find you so attractive. I always had a weakness for dumb blonds.
                      CARTER
                      (Walks away)
                      Go suck a lemon.
                      McKAY
                      Very sexy. Very, very sexy
God, he can be so annoying, but I just love the chemistry between AT and DH. Priceless!

                      Thank you, Skydiver

                        Hi,

Newbie here to these boards, so I wanted to introduce myself as a fellow huge Sam fan. I'm actually, relatively speaking, in some ways, an newbie to SG1. I think the first episode I saw was Threads. However, I have since watched every episode several times. (I do get obsessive about things I love.) Thank God for DVDs.

I've spent the morning reading the last few days of posts, and I have to say I'm really glad to have found this thread...so much of what many of you are saying is so in line with my thinking on Sam, SG1, and the pitfalls of Season 9.

As for Season 9-I've been dissapointed. I just posted a very long rant on my livejoural about this very topic yesterday. I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one without an all-consuming Cameron-love, or who thinks Vala is the best thing since the 'Gate itself! (I wonder how much I might have hated them if I hadn't also been a huge Farscape fan?)

Sam on the other hand-I can't count the ways I love that character. The friend who got me into SG1 really hates Sam, and I just can't fathom it.

It would have been easy, I think, to have Sam be a really annoying character: having her be both a kick-ass soldier, and a brilliant scientist could well have made her be too perfect and unbelivable. But instead she's been written as this wonderfully flawed, three-dimensional character who I can't help adoring. AT does such a magnificent job with Sam.

                        Finally:

Crack!Fic never read so good. Honestly, you guys should try it if you get the chance and if someone hasn't already mentioned it. It's definitely S/J, but it reads like Jane Austen, so it makes for an interesting storyline. It has everyone in it from Jack to Vala to Cameron to Jacob. It's just a great read.

I think I might need to go in the PR business. Anyone got a fic they want pimped?
I've seen Night Terrors mentioned several times, can anyone point me to it?

And A Manuvering Business was magnificent! Totally Crack!Fic, but Crack!Fic at it's finest.

what do you like aobut them? What don't you like? what would you have changed?
Great topic and, as many of you already know, one that is very important to me.

The Sam/Jacob relationship is one of the few *perfect* Stargate relationships. And by that I don't mean that it is a perfect, "everything is peachy" relationship, but rather that it was one of the few relationships honored with consistent writing and one that made sense and fit in the overall picture. And, for personal reasons, I always have and always will treasure this relationship.

The first episode where we get to meet Jacob, the emotions are all over the place. The first thing I saw in Sam was her need to make Jacob proud and to earn his respect. I got the feeling that that was something she had been fighting for all her life. Now, when she finally has *the* position USAF and military wise, she cannot tell him. At the same time, it was clear to me that Jacob had always been proud of her, but was never able to actually let her know. Throw in his feeling guilty about Sam's mother's death and the fact that he is about to die, and you've got yourself a perfectly screwed up relationship to work with.

That's how we were introduced to Jacob and over the seasons I enjoyed watching how Sam and Jacob were able to grow closer together than ever before even though they were physically farther apart than ever before.

I pretty much like every aspect of this relationship. I always enjoyed watching the happy flickers in Sam's eyes when Jacob would step through the gate. I was impressed by how well they were able to work together and how professional they remained while caring for the other. I loved watching how their mutual respect for each other grew over the seasons. I enjoyed Jacob's typical fatherly quirks.

I guess, what I liked the most is how well this relationship worked for Sam's character development. Jacob showed a side of Sam that we otherwise would not have been able to enjoy.

The only aspect that didn't work for me was the end of Threads. I don't think it was necessary, show or otherwise. I think that Jacob could have been great in
                            Spoiler:
S9 and any that may follow. He could have been Sam's constant when she left the SGC and when she came back and had a hard time fitting in. For that matter, he could have been my constant in this new show. I guess, what I am trying to say is that killing off Jacob was senseless and unwise IMHO.

The last thing that comes to mind is the great chemistry that AT and CA obviously have and that just works wonders on screen. Their scenes are very believable and you can tell that both have great respect for each other.

Summary: For me it is the most interesting of Sam's relationships and it simply is a joy to watch.

P.S. I can hardly waith to see AT and CA together in July.

                            Thank you, Skydiver

That's the only one I remember right now, and only because after GUP was on, I watched Redemption and 48 hours for the classic Sam/MacKay banter.
                                McKAY
Huh! So it is. I'm mortally allergic to citrus. One drop of lemon and I could die. I'll have whatever that is.
                                (to Carter)
                                Gotta be very careful.

                                [snip]
                                CARTER
That's why they came up with the forty-eight hour deadline, isn't it? You told them Teal'c would already be dead!
                                McKAY
                                That's why it's called a deadline.
                                CARTER
                                (Getting up in anger)
                                God! You're a joke.
                                McKAY
Wish I didn't find you so attractive. I always had a weakness for dumb blonds.
                                CARTER
                                (Walks away)
                                Go suck a lemon.
                                McKAY
                                Very sexy. Very, very sexy
God, he can be so annoying, but I just love the chemistry between AT and DH. Priceless!
                                Minor correction.

I do believe Sam calls McKay a "jerk" not a "joke"...
