It is a neat effect. I did an example here.

Sky and Mini, you make some excellent points.

There are a lot of little hints at that. Case in point is one particular facet of a recent Mallozzi blog I found interesting where he stated (paraphrased) that he and the writing team were breaking story ideas, trying to flesh out how they were going to (realistically) find a way to add Vala to the SGC, and potentially to SG-1.
That, right there, told me that tptb weren't planning to add Vala to the full time storyline they originally intended. They were told to do so, and subsequently now have to "figure out" a way to make it work. Very likely, they have no better indication of what to do with Vala (as a long-term character in the SGC universe) than they had (or have) any idea how that wwill affect the Sam Carter role in the future.
If the network continues to have such a profound and deliberate influence on the creative element(s) of the series, then I'm afraid we very likely won't see the show go on much longer at all. Network interference with minutia almost always spells the demise of a show.

        mini (my suppositions, at least)
I read JM's "comment" the same way Mini did. It is sad to see that people who don't care much for the show but rather only the money end of it have so much say in the creative part, but I guess, that's how the showbiz works.

Obviously, the show's formula has been working for 8 years and even though I didn't like everything that was done, character and story wise, I always enjoyed it. I think it is very risky to change the concept of a show after 8 successful years. True, maybe something had to be changed given that RDA left the show and given that a lot of the story lines were finished at the end of season 8. But the heart of the soul, which for me was always the team and the team interaction, should not be sacrificed like this. That's what I am missing the most this season: the team, and that's why I can't get a real feel for the "new" Stargate.

I think what is also missing a lot is a connection between the first 8 seasons and season 9. Yeah, Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c obviously have been "working" together but everything else from the past seems as if it never happened. Whether it is that Jack doesn't seem to exist anymore or that other characters are not even mentioned at all.
I mean, c'mon, the team has been through so much together and you could always tell how much they really cared for each other and respected each other, yet nothing of this is there this season. And I don't even want to start with how disappointed I have been with the storylines for Sam this year.

I know that for a lot of people Stargate is just business, and I don't necessarily mean the writers and producers of the show. I don't know how much influence SciFi and Sony have (BTW – I just read that Sony will be out of the picture again pretty soon), but obviously somebody has more say now than they had before, and I don't think it's working well for the show, but that's just me.

Oh, and before I forget, I think all the actors involved with Stargate, and that includes Ben and Claudia, seem to be very nice and professional, and unfortunately, are caught in the middle of this. I just hope that the atmosphere at bridge and amongst the actors is still as friendly and special as it always was, although it must be hard for all of them to deal with this, the oldtimers as well as the newcomers.

I haven't given up hope yet, I am really looking forward to Friday and the rest of the second half. But at the same time, I am also worried about Season 10 and no matter who has the most control right now, I hope, for the sake of the show, that the Stargate PTB will somehow be able to bring back the "Old" Stargate, even if it is in a new package.

*Just my 2 cents on the subject.*

        Thank you, Skydiver

Excuse me, but isn't part of the charm of SG1 the fact that they (supposedly) stick fairly closely to how the Air Force is run? If so, then chances are, no matter how much some of us don't like it, there are no "co-leaders" of teams/units. There is ONE commander and since (sadly) the military is still very much a "boy's club", that commander is 8 times out of 10 going to be male, regardless if the highest ranking person of the unit is female.

The whole situation - be it the reality of the military or things concerning Amanda and the rest of the cast/crew is all down to politics and the almighty dollar. Sad but true. Even sadder is that the actors (all of them) are caught in the middle. None of the actors, imho are at fault and I'm willing to hazard a guess that some of the SGPTB aren't at fault either...they're answering to SCILIE who wants to control their supposed "original" series. Sorry, but to me, SciLie didn't originate SG1 - that was MGM and Showtime. They just picked it up when Showtime dumped it. That's not original.

Yeah, I'll concede that. Sam's anything but evil; clumsy is a good term. But also as it was written rather clumsily, I think that may be my main cringe factor with the scene. As for Pete, well, I've already said I think he genuinely loved Sam but just wasn't right.

Just sayin', the dating thing would have worked better, I agree, without taking this all the way from

Hm. Wonder what will happen to the Sony forums they've been trying to build up over there.

yeah. scili is just trying to make as much money off it as they can before they 'help' it into oblivion.

for some strange reason, adn this happened with tnt and B5, the network suits just cannot keep thier hands out of things. they have this innate 'i must stick my nose into the creative process' thing going and never accept that they end up killing the shows they 'save'

they refuse to acknowledge teh creative input of the show's creators and insist upon sticking their noses in with 'suggestions' that are often based on some focus group, the ceo's wife's opinion or the fact that X is the sig other of Y and wants Y to have more air time
