Amanda's just a doll. What a delightfully quirky sense of humor...a perfect mix of goofiness and graciousness...
Now for the anti-character threads. I don't mind the idea of a thread where you talk about minor or recurring characters and say things that you don't necessarily appreciate or whatever. I think on the anti-Vala one I posted one message where I said that I wanted them to add more dimensions to the character...give her more depth...which they started to do in The Powers that Be and Beachhead...but that I couldn't see her character being sustainable for the series without really sanding down the rough spots. Like Felger. As much as I adore Felger...and I'm sure they said this in the commentaries...he's meant as a once in a while kind of character that could not be maintained as a regular. Again, both of these characters are not leads.
But when we're talking about a lead character, the idea of having an anti character thread rubs me the wrong way. I mean, I'm not a huge Jackson fan...*cough*...but I couldn't IMAGINE posting on an anti-Daniel thread. I am somewhat amused by the fact that Carter's biggest sin seems to be she's too perfect...perfect scientist, warrior, etc. Oh but wait, she's also the town idiot who can't do anything right. Whatever.
wrong. Maybe it's my optimistic nature, but I believe that even the biggest villain and even poorly written characters have redeeming qualities. And it's so much fun loving to hate a character because he's the villain than hating some good guy because he takes the spotlight away of your favourite hero !
Which brings me back to Amanda's character and the traits that attract us all to her...and the very theme of Samanda...Kindness Reigns Here. Kindness. We can all talk about what we love about Sam and what we don't love.
We can discuss and joke about ship...what we like or don't like or wish or don't wish without it devolving into a ridiculous sparring match. I can play with Tsaxlady and Agent Dark who are non-shippers because they know that I'm being silly. I don't have to nor want to make them see things my way.
We can discuss Sam's strengths and weaknesses. We can talk about some of her mistakes and talk about how they fit what we know of her personality.
May I make a request that we return to those days? That we talk about these things about the character we love and the actress we adore in this open and accepting environment???
With the thought above all else that KINDNESS REIGNS HERE.
And I concur on your request. I really miss the old times of the Royal Court. I'd like to go back to this golden age when we were all happy, enthusiast, funny.
Not so long ago, I was only a lurker on Samanda. I watched in awe all those wonderful posts. I'm really proud to be part of this thread now, but there's something I regret. I miss the spirit of the days when our wise elders were in the making of the SaGC Collection. I'd really like to see this spirit back.
Oh...by the way...I want to let you all know that I'm working on a website for Samanda...so we're not crammed on one little thread...we'll be able to openly share pictures and stories and videos...it'll be swell and a COMPLETELY Amanda/Sam friendly environment (no anti anything).
So...please go to my site (it's just kinda like a cover page for now)...and sign up for updates!!!

AND if you haven't voted for my video, then like, please do, mmmkay?
I voted for your video of course ! I had fun watching it, so what's a girl to do ?

Since there are so many things to like about Sam, I was trying to narrow it down to the one thing that has the most impact on me. Yes, she's smart, she's well versed and well read, she's funny, she's sensitive, she kicks boo-tay, etc. But so do many other characters, so what is it about Sam that is so compelling to me, that makes me frequently say to my daughter, "look at Sam". I mean, other than the fact that I'll soon be able to say, "see, you DO need those fractions, so you can become a theoretical astrophysicist and go through the Stargate yourself someday!!!"
I think all the things that Sam is combine into a personhood that says, "its all good. Everything's going to be okay." Which is saying a lot considering everyone but Teal'c has lost count of how many times they've saved earth.
First of all, she doesn't comes off as 'trying too hard'. She COMMANDS respect when so many females in her position would DEMAND respect (well, except for the arm-wrestling comment in COTG, but she never had to do that again). She also gives respect - not based on people's functional value, but on their intrinsic value as a person/alien/sentient being. Lots of people would have a hard time directly reporting to others who are 'way NOT smarter' than her, yet she is most always deferential. It takes a big person to get over yourself already and realize other people's contributions are every bit as valuable as yours, albeit 'different'. Even in the more relational moments that are awkward for her I think she still conducts herself appropriately and with dignity ("welcome to *MY* life").
Second, she doesn't lose her cool. Knowing the stakes, she applies herself to the problem and puts aside that which does not aid in solving said problem. Her advice to Feldger in Avenger 2.0 is something I have remembered on occasion: "You are the man for the job. Forget about the big picture for a second. Forget about the consequences. Just focus on the problem." (Personal application: when I feel inadequate in a situation I have to buck up and do whatever needs to be done because I'm obviously the person for the job because I'm there!) Plus, how many times has O'Neill said, "you'll think of something, you always do." I've lost count. Even Cameron wonders what he'll do if she's not there to fix what he screws up! I'll quote Thor: "it was your dumb idea!"
Finally, for those who say she's too smart, I'll quote a bit from Redemption Part 2:
McKAY: "I always wanted to be a pianist."
CARTER: "Excuse me?"
McKAY: "A concert pianist. You know, a guy who plays the piano in front of lots of people?"
CARTER: "Right."
McKAY: "What did you think I said?"
CARTER: "Never mind."
McKAY: "I had a not-so-comfortable childhood. My parents hated each other, blamed me. Music…was my salvation. It had this…perfect order for me.
CARTER: "That's nice. Really."
McKAY: "When I was twelve, my teacher told me to quit. A fine clinical player, he said, but no sense of the art whatsoever."
CARTER: "Why are you telling me this?"
McKAY: "I'm just…trying to bond."
CARTER: "Why?"
McKAY: "Hospital gowns turn me on."
McKAY: "I turned to science because I thought it would be different than music, but it isn't, it's just the same. It's just as much of an art as anything else. "
CARTER: "Look, it's not your fault that EM pulse didn't work."
McKAY: "You're an artist, Major. Maybe the best I've ever seen. I'm just critical because I'm jealous."
Someone who makes their discipline an art form is someone who has worked hard, has made sacrifices, is focused and self-directed. Sam doesn't 'try hard' or 'strive' because she's done all that already. To take it out of the lab and into the field IS in itself an art form. And she does it with spunk, humor, a P90 AND lipstick. Its a joy to watch.
CARTER: "having fun now sir"
O'NEILL: "you go girl!"
'nuff said yo

Originally posted by jckfan55Had to check out the anti-Sam thread. Interesting that their biggest complaint seems to be that she's too smart and accomplished for her age and looks too good. I could think of worse things to be accused of. Jeepers, they're *all* heroes, of course they're the best in their fields. It's not like the SGC is going to hire incompetents. And it's tv so of course they're all attractive. As brilliant as Sam and Daniel are I'm sure they finished their PhDs quicker than average.
Anyway--SAM IS GREAT!
Someone mentioned in that thread that McKay is smart and not conventionally handsome, so why does Sam have to be beautiful? Well, like you said, it's television. And non-beautiful women only get supporting parts. Actually, less than supporting parts. Generally, non-speaking background parts. It's definitely a double standard, because average-looking guys are allowed, but not average-looking women.
The leader of the SGC is a man, so he can be played by Beau Bridges. The leader of the Atlantis team is a woman, so we get the beautiful Weir. [She's not my favorite, but I do acknowledge that she is quite pretty.] Of course, you have to have the good-looking men, too, but compare the not-so-good-looking men to the non-existent not-so-good-looking women in recurring speaking parts.
What was my point? Oh, nevermind.
Amanda is gorgeous. So be it. That's hardly a negative.

It's cool. Most people know what you're talking about when you say she has spunk. It's only when we're feeling naughty...
