Seriously, I think they'll take more risks in S10, because they
a) can. Vala's character has proven that SG can take some irreverence.
b) are in S10. They ave to keep it interesting for themselves, too.
A.
I agree. TPTB have absolutely nothing to gain by playing safe anymore. The fans who are negative about s9 are never going to be pacified, and the fans who love s.9 have shown they are willing to embrace change. The writers now have a chance to develop things in all sorts of interesting ways. Especially as they also have a bunch of actors who can rise to anything the script throws at them, and are prepared to take a few risks. In particular, CB is never going to be the type of actor who plays safe. It's obvious that she loves playing complicated multi-faceted characters, and that she's not going to worry about whether Vala is an 'appropriate role model' and all that inhibiting stuff. That has to be liberating for the writers. (Just to be clear, I'm not referring to sexuality, but to the possibilities for psychological exploration of a flawed, damaged personality - the sort of thing SG-1 has always avoided when we've met previous ex-hosts).
My only fear is that the writers (or more likely, higher up execs) will wimp out under the barrage of criticism from certain fans. They've certainly caved in over whether Cam is the leader of SG-1, and that makes me worried. (Since there's absolutely no good story justification for the shared leadership decision, I have to assume there's a meta-textual reason - either fan pressure or behind-the-scenes politics). On the other hand, there's nothing in JM's recent comments to suggest they're losing their nerve over Vala, and plenty to get me excited and intrigued.
I, too, still don't really understand what is going on with the joined leadership. But I don't think the problem was just fans complaining about Sam being ignored.
IMHO, the PTB are afraid of the gender issue. Why isn't a female leader of the team but the new guy? (Because every SG1 member left and so Mitchell got the lead and now they've joined the team again, of course! *grumble, growl*)
For me this isn't an issue if it's made clear. Mitchell is the team leader because
a) he was made leader and the other's re-joined. First come, first serve.
b) Carter wants to concentrate on science. Just because Jack was seemingly a lazy a$$, doesn't mean that normal missions aren't planned or that there's no paperwork. How DO you explain some of the stuff that happened in a report for Washington, D.C. ?
c) they simply think he's better qualified for whatever reason.
Wishy-washy is an expression in my book. I have no issues with Mitchell as leader. It's apparant (at least to me) on the show that Sam doesn't either.
Personally, I don't have a problem either.

Welcome nathanaus
They're both in for themselves, but will do the right thing at the end of the day.
In both cases reason has nothing to do with it.
They'll both flirt with anything that's breathing.
They're both played by actors that are cream of the crop and anything but typical Hollywood.
