I always kinda thought from Day one that Jack always came across as the one who was intrigued by the possibility that there might be something between them that was for keeps. I understand from Sam's perspective as a young officer with a career and appearances to consider why she would be more hesitant but I think it's great how, instead of the predictable "hot blonde falls for older officer" scenario, we got the other way round with Jack being the one to fall for her without him actually realising it until that moment in 'D&C' where he looked like he'd been sucker punched.
Sam and Jack... Still the best romance on TV in years!

I agree AmberLM, but in later episodes, they left Sam out there on a limb (Affinity). I also didn't like that on Sci-Fi (now SyFy)'s web site for their character summaries, Sam's talked about her accomplishments and that she carried a torch for her commanding officer (SQUEE by the way that they acknowledged Ship) but Jack's narration mentioned nothing of his feelings (hidden or otherwise). I guess it wasn't considered macho enough to mention or something

          Enigma

          Spoiler:

There is often enormous significance placed on one’s first kiss.

The first time Sam kissed a boy she was fourteen years old. His name was Kevin Mercer. Under pressure from her friends Sam had allowed him to take her into a dark corner during a school dance. The kiss was all lips and saliva. It was awkward and kind of icky. Sam couldn’t understand why this was such a preoccupation among her peers. But then, none of them could understand what was so fascinating about quantum mechanics. Their loss.

When Kevin Mercer decided to take things further and tried to reach his hand under Sam’s blouse she decked him.

Her father was furious when he had to pick her up at the principal’s office that night and was informed of her three day suspension. When Sam finally got over her embarrassment and told him the whole story he took those days off from work and they spent the time at home playing board games, eating ice cream and watching movies together. It was one of Sam’s favorite memories.

The first time Sam kissed an alien she was coming up on her first year in the stargate program. His name was Narim. Under pressure from General Hammond Sam had befriended him in order to learn more about his people, the Tollan, and their technology.

He had not been circumspect about his admiration for her. When he presented her with a recorder that allowed her to feel his emotions for her she was moved. They shared an awkward kiss that thankfully was interrupted by Daniel. It was one of Sam’s more interesting memories.

The first time Sam kissed Jack was just after her transfer to Area 51 had come through. The pressure of remaining apart had finally become too great and they knew it was time for their lives to change. Unwilling to let this limited opportunity slip by they hurriedly gathered their closest friends together at Jack’s cabin for their long awaited and much desired union.

Surprisingly the kiss was not the least bit awkward. A little hesitant at first but soon warm and ardent, the intimate touch was one of sweetness and fulfillment. It was the perfect first kiss.

          Ummmmm
          Spoiler:
almost as if he knew her lips, knew how she liked to be kissed. Almost as if it wasn't his first time kissing her. hmmmmmm?

Back to the review of The Serpent's Lair:

I made the following observation on the cliffhanger episode from the previous season:

The writers missed that Teal'c is holding a zat and standing behind Klorel as he "mind fingers" Daniel yet he doesn't take the shot which would not be fatal to either of them, but instead yells that O'Neil must take the shot with his lethal handgun. While I loved the drama and acting RDA got to show us, it would've been better if Teal'c were weaponless.
A few people pointed out, pros and cons, of whether the zat Teal'c was holding would have had any effect so therefore Teal'c called for O'Neil to act.

But I noticed in The Serpent's Lair, Teal'c grabbed Skarra from behind as he was using the palm device and it also made me remember he'd held Skarra from behind in Within the Serpent's Grasp earlier as O'Neil was trying to reach Skarra and he had to tell Teal'c to let Skarra go so he could zat him.

Great review, SaraBahama! I loved how the team was coming together already, and that slight bit of bromance between Jack and Daniel at the end.

To me, Affinity never happened. It was OOC and ridiculous from start to finish. It was also written by PDL so, again, unsurprising about the unusual behaviour on a few characters' parts. He also doesn't write S/J ship and his brother played Pete so go figure. It's always seemed to me that there's a certain kind of writing/comedy/acting that comes with the DeLuise family when it comes to stargate (Urgo, PDL episodes, Pete) and, for me personally, it's not my cup of tea. I like subtle and real not crazy-in-your-face, tongue in cheek. Each to their own I suppose.

Re Syfy, disappointing but to be expected I suppose. The ship in SG-1 has so much more layers than "blonde chick makes googly eyes at hunky CO" but then I wouldn't expect a channel like "Syfy" to differentiate between the two. Makes me think that the person who wrote it doesn't really watch the show or pay attention; it's just lazy journalism. That said, it doesn't make it right.

Edit: Ikorni thanks for the green! I'm glad it's not just me and I fully agree, Chimera was painful to watch for many reasons but mostly I found the worst part was the lack of chemistry. Pete and Sam were about as flat as week old soda. Again, that just happens to be how I feel about it.

I agree about subtlety. What I hate most about Affinity, of course, is the Sam inquiry of Jack. I know the writers like to be ambivalent and vague and have us interpret and fill in the gaps. But I tell ya, I CAN SEE SHIP IN ANYTHING and I just couldn't make out WHAT that was supposed to be from Jack.

I went and checked, SyFy has changed both characterizations. Neither refers to any type of relationship any more . Although, it was so long ago, that I may not even have found the same page, there could be another area. The one I checked on was at the SG1 quizzes section which is where I think I saw it all those years ago. The summaries are quite short now.

i took the quizzes, and the only shippy thing for jack was mention of him kissing sam in 'woo', and for sam, in what her password was 'fishing'.
