        New Ground
        Synopsis (provided by Stargate Wiki):
The Bedrosian military are convinced that SG-1 are working for their enemy, the Optricans. While imprisoned, Teal'c evades capture but is blinded. He relies on an archaeologist to help free the rest of his team.

        Favorite Lines:
        after being captured)
Do you believe we come in peace?
        (no answer)
Got a commanding officer around here?
        (still no answer)
        Wow, tough crowd.

Hey Rigar. You know that "we come in peace" business? Bite me.

        General Review:
A good but frustrating episode. The Bedrosians are really annoying in their stubbornness and generally aggressive demeanor, and even though it's completely understandable - especially given that they are dealing with the military - it gets tiring quickly. I like the weapons they used, and the electric cages are very cool (and really represent a classic SG-1 image to me).

Also, the fact that Nyan is kept on (not just at the SGC but as Daniel's research assistant) and is then never seen or even mentioned again is very annoying. Stargate is usually pretty good at continuity, but they don't even try here. Unless they intended to bring the character back, then why end the episode like that? There was a ton of different things they could have done with Nyan which wouldn't have required us to ever see him again, but it sets up expectations that are never fulfilled. Silly.

The show also hits a new level for special effects here. The bats in the cave are excellent, all the various weapon blasts during the big fight and notably the shuttle crash is great. It doesn't stand up by today's standards at all, but in terms of what the show had done up to this point it's marks a new level.

        - The tool being used to uncover the gate in the opening shot is shiny brand new!

        - A bit of a coincidence that the SGC dial up the planet the very moment that it is uncovered. Carter's explanation of the cold-dialing program doesn't really make sense either. She says "we've got a hit" before the connection has even been made. Until the 7th chevron locks, you never know if the connection will be successful.

        - First real use of the portable naquadah reactor in a standard off-world mission setting, and it makes it clear that it works in place of a DHD for manual dialing. Nice to have these things clarified. I wonder how many the SGC has, and did Carter build them all?

        - When he first appeared, I thought the actor playing Riger was Bruce Campbell! This is the first time I noticed his character has a limp.

-Author's Note: I am really disappointed that Jack didn't shoot Rygar twice with the Zat near the end of this episode. Bastard deserved it after the way he treated our favorite team.

        S/J interaction:
there is some S/J interaction but nothing i could find as Shippy.

Good review LCJS. I agree with all of your comments, especially about Nyan. I think a lot of this episode was just a let down. I will have to rewatch it again though to see if I have any specific comments.

Thanks for the nice review, LCJS. The electric cages are very cool indeed

I watched New Ground tonight, but I found my attention wandering a lot. I don't think this episode really holds my interest. It's very blah.

The Stargate against the cliff was a cool visual. It was a production nightmare because apparently the blue screen needs to be a certain distance back for the effect to work and the actors to jump through the ring. They had to build a fake rock face around the real one and you can see the angles on the effects shots to try and hide some of the difficulties they had with it.

The actors hated those cages. I can't say I blame them. They were stuck in that little space for almost an entire week. I think the fact they weren't having much fun translates onto the screen. I guess they should be miserable as they have been captured by a hostile force, but this episode is just missing any spark for me.

I agree that they just dropped Nyan and it bugged me. Richard Ian Cox, who played Nyan, shows up later in Atlantis: Defiant One as another character. I thought that was a real missed opportunity. That could have easily been Nyan. They wouldn't have needed to give that much background; it would have just been a nice nugget for us long-term Stargate fans.

The whole premise of this episode doesn't really work for me. First of all, Daniel didn't really ask any useful questions before getting permission for SG1 to go through. They don't even know who Nyan is and why he's there. If they had gotten a little more information they could have avoided the whole getting captured thing.

The tech for this world actually seems pretty advanced. A lot closer to the goa'uld than us with energy weapons, force fields, and shuttle crafts. If the SGC had been more careful with first contact maybe they could have made an alliance.

Add to all this the total lack of shippiness and this episode really falls down to the bottom end of my list of SG episodes and I don't often come back to it.

the only thing i also remembered is that later on the prop they used for the bedrosian weapons were redesigned to look like wraith weapons that are used in Stargate Atlantis during season 2 and i think season 3.

That I did not know. But it makes sense. They had so many old props by that time I'm sure it helped with the budget to redress some of them for other uses.

I was equally bored by both episodes.

I totally had to look up Demons to see what it was about The only thing cool about that episode is that Carter saves the day by recognizing that the Goa'uld has jumped into the fat guy.

New Ground, but only by a whisker. They're both boring as hell. And I don't say that about many episodes.

Red Sky was another, for me. Maybe Jack's attitude throughout the episode wore off on me too. (I wonder if RDA was having a bad week, if you watch AT's video diary for that episode, he hardly appears and when she tries to film him he throws food at her (looks like a strawberry or radish or something. The only time he cracks a smile is the bit where they fall out of the gate and he's brushing straw off her butt then doing the whole tongue-in-cheek "oops, I need that tape!" gag lol).

Edit: clearly I don't like the Christianity-based episodes lol or maybe that's just a coincidence?
Sam and Jack... Still the best romance on TV in years!
