It could also be Sam's idea of duty (and wanting very much to prove herself still) that keeps her with him in Solitudes.
I don't think wanting to prove herself was what drove Sam in "Solitudes". I think the only thing that "drove" her was wanting to make the stargate work in order to get them both home and get Jack medical help.

I agree. I also think the only reason she went back into the cave was because there clearly wasn't going to be anyone nearby to help them and thus she would rather go back and die with Jack, than him down there alone and her freezing somewhere on the surface of the "ice planet".
      Unmade Plans (WIP: 11/20):
Sam's life takes a turn in an unexpected direction when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to keep the baby and raise it on her own will alter her life forever. Relationships are put to the test, especially the one between her and Jack. She doesn't know what to expect from him and he surprises her at every turn.

I don't think there's anything wrong with, in retrospect, translating certain moments as 'shippy', knowing what we know later on about S/J.

S.1 is like that first connection - no, they aren't in love with each other, or interested in each other 'that way' - but they have chemistry from the get go. Sam would have stayed with anyone, her duty would have demanded no less, but that she was with Jack made it one of those early moments, an early experience, that would be a foundation for what they would later have together. When you face death with someone, there's a bond that gets forged.

I would say the early seasons weren't *romantic*. They were the building blocks - they were the moments that later created the knock-down awesome ship that is S/J

Hey, I haven,t done my review for solitudes yet, we shouldn't be discussing this stuff yet

But yes agreed, the early seasons they weren't in love, yes they probably were attracted to each other, and there was definately a bit of flirting going on. They were developing a true friendship tho, and I think by solitudes that bond was there, and I think they were realising that they were connected in a deep way on an emotional level. We were starting to get the conversations that take place with just a look, not that this meant anything other than friendship and team work at this point, but it was the start of the ship we all love. I think when you rewatch the show knowing what we know happens later down the line, we see these moments more and more, I know for a fact that I hadn't noticed half of the looks, or the flirting the first time I watched it, so whilst I don't look into the moments any more than I think realistically was happening they are nice to see, and still make me feel very squee at the fact that they were so special at the beginning in developing the deep love of later seasons

OK, I managed to fix my internet myself!. (Take that overpriced, useless cable company!)

I have to get some stuff ready for work tomorrow and then I'll sit down and write up a review for First Commandment. Expect something before midnight. (I know you all await with bated breath. )

Possibly, but I can't help but also think that there're so many things 'driving her' at the moment - the desperation of being stuck, needing to prove herself, yet already learning not to leave a man behind. I've always seen her as needing show her mettle (which she has) especially when the going got tough.

But I don't see them in love yet, definitely.

                    Summary
Welcome to SG-1 Lifestyles! We have a great show for you today. In our cooking segment Dr. Daniel Jackson shares his famous recipe for field ration macaroni and cheese. Mmmmm, tastes like chicken! Next we help you unlock your hidden talents with resident artist Teal'c. We will have an deep philosophical discussion about the Ten Commandments with Colonel Jack O'Neill. And in our special relationship feature, relationship expert Sam Carter shares with us why it may not be such a good idea to reconnect with the Ex!

                    Favorite Scene
Conner tells his story: I find this scene just riveting. The lighting, music and mood, with Roger R. Cross's melodious voice, weave a mesmerizing tale of a man falling into a dangerous megalomaniac madness.

                    Favorite Line
Does it say Colonel anywhere on my uniform?

                    General Discussion
As some have pointed out, these early episodes can be very clunky. I don't really them bad for the most part, just very ham-handed, and this one is no different. There are a lot of things that make no sense, like Conner not going through the gate to get help when he had a clear chance to do so. And what's with the other member of SG-9 - Baker - who continues to follow Hansen even after he murders a teammate? Additionally, I'm annoyed with the misplaced analogy to Abraham and other mangled Biblical references.

I didn't like that once again Sam has no restraint or discipline and goes off on her own when she sees something she doesn't like. I get that she has a strong sense of justice, but I don't like how it leads her to bad decisions that could endanger herself and her team. Clearly the writers haven't got a handle on her character and don't really know how to write for her yet.

I give this story a plus because it does demonstrate a lot of teamwork between SG-1, which is a real strong point in favor of these early episodes. Everyone plays to their strengths. Teal'c uses his knowledge of the Goa'uld. Daniel uses his abilities as the communicator to speak to the people and reveal the truth. Sam uses her technical skills to make the shield generator work. And Jack puts his life on the line to give his team the chance they need to do their magic.

                    Sam & Jack
We get a rather unexpected backstory about Sam when we learn that Hansen is her ex-fiance. I know that relationship is often interpreted as having been an abusive one. This is our first indication that generally speaking, Sam has terrible judgment in men. And I contend that her later relationship with is also based on a foundation that involves emotional blackmail and manipulation, which I consider abusive. So maybe this is a pattern with her. But in the case of Hansen I chalk it up to a young, bookish Sam who is swept away by the unexpected attention from a charming, charismatic man, but she eventually wised up and had enough strength and confidence to walk away.

When Sam is talking with Daniel about Hansen and her fondness for the lunatic fringe we get a very telling cut away to Jack.

Actually I think this scene is more significant for what Daniel says. That the crazier they are the more stressful situations they are placed in. Remember Daniel knows that Jack was suicidal when he accepted that first mission through the gate and the gov't/AF knew it. Sam doesn't yet know Jack's personal history. So she sees him in a totally different light, which is reflected in their little heart to heart at the end of the episode.

Jack takes a first step toward opening himself up here. He doesn't reveal anything personal per se, but he shows an understanding of what it means to face difficult life and death choices that Sam is sure to surmise can only come from experience. Jacks willingness to mentor her in this way shows a growing sense of trust and camaraderie between them that will only increase as her experiences continue to reflect and merge with his own.

                    Rating: 5/2
Rating this episode is tough. I'm going to go with 5: Average for the overall episode. It's not bad, but it really doesn't do anything for me either. As far as ship goes I have to mark it down for not having much and giving us a needless past relationship for Sam. I'll go with 2: Tedious for the non-shippyness factor.

                        A Broca Divide Ficlet:

                        Spoiler:
Sam was going just a little bit crazy with all that needed to be done before leaving to take command of Atlantis. She had decided to rent out her house and had to get it all packed up tonight so she could spend her last few days on earth at the cabin with Jack. They both knew that it could be a while before they might be together again.

Her team, as usual, had come to her aid. She was going to miss their ready support in Pegasus. The guys were loading furniture on the truck while Sam packed up the books in her office and Vala sorted through her closet and drawers in the bedroom.

When Sam went to check on her progress, Vala made it very clear that she was not impressed with Sam’s less than exciting wardrobe. There were large piles of old comfy clothes Vala insisted would have to go.

A ratty olive green tank top crumpled at the base of one pile immediately caught Sam’s eye. She hadn’t seen it years—didn’t even realize she had kept it. Absently fingering the fabric her mind wandered toward a distant memory. Steam . . . heat . . . ardent kisses . . . ferocious, irrepressible desire.

Sam rescued the shirt from the other Goodwill bound apparel and immediately placed it in her open suitcase. Jack would be greeted by a sweet little surprise when he arrived at the cabin the next day.

Seeing the mysterious look on Sam’s face as she singled out this garment for special treatment, Vala attempted to wheedle the story out of her. But Sam was largely immune to Vala’s pestering. She just smiled and insisted they get lunch.

A ficlet for The First Commandment:

                        Spoiler:
Sam and Daniel sat at the briefing room table with their heads together excitedly discussing the initial survey report for the next planet SG-1 was scheduled to visit when Jack entered enthusiastically trying to explain hockey to baffled Teal’c. As Jack took his seat across from the two ebullient scientists he was glad to see that Sam had apparently put the disappointments and self-recriminations of the last mission behind her.
For all her bluster when she first walked into this room, Jack knew she was still so untarnished. There were so many things she had not yet seen or experienced, thankfully. He was doubtful given their job it would remain so for long. Eventually she was going to have to make the choice to kill. At some point it was going to become a necessity to protect herself, or her team, maybe even to save earth. He wasn’t looking forward to seeing her take that step past innocence, and he would do everything in his power keep her from it for as long as possible.

                            The First Commandment:

I love the camera cutaway to Jack as Sam talks about her fondness for the lunatic fringe.

The look on Jack's face as Jonas backhands Sam - oooooo, Moofassssaaaah. If only he wasn't hogtied at that moment!

I agree with a lot of what hlndncr has said about the writing of Sam's character but I can make it fit if I take it as she still had not realized she would receive full acceptance from her team, so as a woman used to dealing with discrimination in the military, she is overly gun-ho.

The thing I can't stand most about this episode is the whole "colonel on my uniform scene". First, it doesn't say "colonel" on his uniform (I know, I'm being obtuse and nitpicky on this one); but second, two officers blatantly say "no" and refuse to follow an order in what is the most critical black ops unit of the country? The unit -SG Command- that the WORLD must rely on to keep it safe? I don't believe two officers would behave in this manner with such a lack of discipline, nor do I believe the colonel's reaction to allow it. And we're supposed to be talking about bad-a**ed Jack O'Neill.

While I found Jack's discussion with Sam about "once you cross that line to kill you come loser to Jonas..." - found it admirable and comforting for Sam, again, it doesn't fit with who they are as a unit. Thank goodness that later on Sam became quite bad-a** herself - weapons specialist/killer. (Don't get me wrong - in real life I'm a big ol' mushy softy, but I love her when she's kicking butt and wielding her modified P90 taking down jaffa and go'auld and any other bad guys.)

ok...it's killing me. There is a fic that's set after this ep in which Sam is in the AFA chapel and she has the Bible that belonged to Jonas. Jack finds her there and a conversation ensues. It's a very reflective piece.

I thought it was Pol's, but I just looked at Campfire and this is not the story that goes with the chapter for this ep.
