I like it!
It is very much like an old time SG1 adventure. (And I love seeing Sam as a kick-butt pilot.) I try not to nit-pick it too much. (Time travel can give you a headache.) But I admit that I miss Jack being a part of the action. I know this was just a special appearance by RDA, but I do miss him as the star and leader of SG1 (one more reason to regret the loss of movie 3).
I am annoyed that when the team was sent to their separate locations across the country and told not to try and contact each other or tamper with the timeline, they actually followed order and did nothing for a year! I just think they would have found a way to get in touch and start planning a jailbreak so to speak.
As for the shippy moments, of course I would have liked something more overt, but I do think there was at least a descent nod to the ship rather than being completely ignored.
So here are the shippy moments as I see them.
Sam smiles when Landry mentions Jack and makes a comment that acknowledges her understanding of his history with Baal.
On a side note, I was surprised to see Sam with an SG1 patch since she just returned from Atlantis and I can’t see her just going back to being #2 on the team.
Sam and Jack stand closely together during Ba'al's extraction ceremony.
It’s like they’re in their own little world. Although, she does call him “Sir,†and while I didn’t expect her to call him Jack, I’d be happier without the “Sir.â€
Jack tells Baal that his life is quite good. He looks at Sam before he says it. So in my mind, he’s telegraphing his happiness to have her back in the same galaxy.
She refuses to leave him when he dies, and Cam has to physically drag her away.
Compare that to when she leaves Daniel behind after the ship sinks. She is clearly upset, but doesn’t have to be pulled away. I don’t think that diminishes the love she has for Daniel (although he’s died so many times she may be a little numb to his impending doom), but her much stronger reaction to loosing Jack demonstrates for me the intimacy of their relationship.
Sam is devastated by his death and cannot function back on Earth in the changed timeline - Mitchell has to remind her they need her.
This is probably my favorite shippy moment. (I live in the cavern of angst.) Sam is almost as good as Jack at compartmentalizing and pushing her feelings aside to get the job done, but here she is absolutely immobilized. And on the commentary Brad notes that her reaction is because O’Neill is dead and he says that AT played it just perfectly. And really Cam’s reaction tells me he understands who she’s just lost too.
Sam is ecstatic to see Jack alive and Jack seems delighted to see her but she is confused when he calls her a dead astronaut.
I also think it’s interesting the way Cam asks Jack if he recognizes her. Again, it sounds to me like he expects more recognition between Jack and Sam.
She can’t stop looking at him when they come aboard the sub.
Sam realizes this Jack is not at all her Jack in the ward room of the submarine.
This is the point where I would have put in text rather than subtext. Sam says we come from an alternate timeline where amongst other things I’m not an astronaut . . . I am your wife. OK, I know the PTB would never actually put that in the script (even though they should), but that’s what I hear in my head.
The interrogation sequence is a nice call back to POV
Sam shops for 'Frootees' - the timelines version of Fruit Loops.
Do you think Jack has told her about the timeloop kiss yet?
With the timeline restored, Jack invites everyone to lunch and even offers to buy at Sam's non-verbal prodding.
Jack and Sam walk off together to talk about a 'moonbase'.
Just mentioned this on the other thread thought I would point out that it is a common misconception that the moonbase Sam is talking about is Atlantis. This took place a year before EatG; so there was no reason for them to be considering making Atlantis a moonbase.
RDA’s original line was “That sounds like work to me.†He was having trouble with it; so when RCC came on the set and watched the scene he turned to BW and asked, “What moonbase?†So that became the line. And to this day no one knows what Sam actually meant by the moonbase.
