Technical and Historical Notes:
After the launch of the BC-304 Daedalus, the United States military issued a requirement (top secret) for a smaller starship class to supplement the new battlecruisers that would begin coming off the assembly line. The vessel would have to be smaller, cheaper, and more maneuverable than the Daedalus, but be able to deploy near-equal firepower against threat ships and installations.
The United States Navy, already involved in constructing the BC-304 and teaching the Air Force how to run ships, immediately recalled Commander R. Doyle Gillespie back from retirement. He had been involved in designing the next-generation of United States attack submarine, and with his unique background in mathmatics and command, was perfect to run such a program.
With the threat of the Goa'uld largely eliminated, Commander Gillespie believed that now was a good time for the development and testing of new technologies in the new ship class (codenamed X-305), as there was no rush to get more ships into the air with what they had. Drawing up a design based on current Navy ships in development, the vessel would only use trinium in 60% of it's construction, cutting it's cost considerably. The project, now codenamed "Abydos", was approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee and began work in a secure drydock near the old submarine base in Charleston, South Carolina.
The design of the X-305 was based heavily upon the BC-304 and BC-303 classes that proceeded it, using the same general hull form as Prometheus. Taking the engines, shields, powerplant, and basic systems from the BC-304 program, the X-305's true innovations were in weaponry, versatility, and overall performance.
Firstly, her "wings" housed a much more powerful and intricate anti-gravity wave generator network. The idea was to use the layout of the much smaller Gou'ald Deathglider's intertial dampening system to provide greater acceleration and maneuverability in the X-305. Initial trial runs showed great promise, as did later training flights alongside Navy F-302s and a captured Al'Kesh. The anti-gravity wave generators granted the X-305 the ability to out-turn and outrun the Al'kesh, despite the destroyer's far greater size.
For weapons, the X-305 was given the first practical coil gun (or mass driver), built with help from the Asgard. Capable of firing naquada/potassium warheaded, depleted uranium shells at a million meters a second, the coil gun would be the weapon of choice against the X-305's intended prey-Al'kesh and other small threat force starships. Each shot would equal roughly a megaton of explosive force in kinetic energy alone, and with the modest naquada enhancement, the coil gun could do considerable damage even against Ha'tak-class motherships.
Her secondary armament includes a vertical missile launch system, a slightly smaller version of the type carried aboard the BC-304s. Instead of five reloads for each launcher, the X-305 only has three. However, this still gives her a very large weapons payload that can be as varied as the ship commander wishes. The X-305 was also given new technology intended for future USN attack submarines-Retractable weapons clips on the sides of the vessel. Essentially "swing-out" launchers, the clips were housed inside the outer edge of the hull, and with a simple release mechanism would turn outwards, exposing it's three missiles in their individual cells for launch. The clips would launch the missiles at a slight angle away from the hull, and properly spaced, an X-305 can launch it's entire payload without difficulty. To save money, the X-305's hull was plated in reactive armor, instead of trinium. The armor explodes outward when struck by weapon's fire, disappating up to 60% of the energy of the hit.
In addition, the X-305 utilized inert naquada armor in it's vital sections (such as the bridge and engineering). This naquada has been depleted of the majority of it's instability, thanks to a method of radiation treatment devised by Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter and Commander Gillespie. While not as resiliant as the inert naquada that makes up the Stargates, this armor is strong enough to absorb the equivalent of a fifty-megaton nuclear detonation at point-blank range. However, this new armor technology is difficult to produce in large amounts, and so will probably be largely excluded from the production version of the X-305.
Finally, the X-305 utilizes Sodan cloaking technology (traded for information on the Ancients) and Asgard shielding, sensors, hyperdrive and transporter technology. Though less than half the size of the Daedalus-class starships, the X-305 (now christened Abydos-class) is no less capable in all aspects aside from small craft capacity. And at half the cost, and over half the weight and size, the Abydos was immediately commissioned and launched under the command of now-Captain R. Doyle Gillespie.
The Abydos was launched and undergoing extensive shakedown trials and tests in Mars orbit at about the time the Prometheus was destroyed in orbit around Tegalus. Her hyperdrive had yet to be installed, and so she was not considered to be sent to rescue SG-1, who had been captured by the Lucian Alliance on P6G-452, with the recently launched Oddessy. She would later participate in anti-smuggling operations with the Free Jaffa Nation Spacefleet, a joint-maneuver designed to promote solidarity between the Tau'ri and the young galactic superpower. In this mission, Abydos was responsible for intercepting a huge shipment of kassa bound for Chulak. One week later, in a rather unorthodox strategy, she defeated a Prior of the Ori by landing on him on the planet Madrona.
She was part of the Earth/Jaffa/Tok'ra/Lucian Alliance/Asgard task force at the second Ori supergate, where she sustained heavy damage in battle against the Ori. She was forced to break off when she'd expended all of her ordnance against the Ori battlecruisers, but was able to assist a number of Jaffa and Tok'ra vessels in their retreat.
Now designated SDD-305 (Space Destroyer), the i]Abydos[/i]-class starship is rapidly entering full-scale production, largely under the management of the US Navy. The Abydos's sister ships, Yggdrasil, Oracle, and Delphi will soon launch from the United States Naval Yards in Charleston, South Carolina. All will be manned by the US Navy. A fourth sister ship, the Helios, is being rushed into service at Area 51 for the use of the Air Force, alongside the new DSC-304 Daedalus-class starship Columbia. The Russian SDD-305 Potemkin is about half-way finished in a remote base in Sibera, while the Royal Air Force and Navy have begun work on the Dauntless and the Avenger in Base Green in Australia's Outback. The Japanese and French have also expressed interest in the design, and hope to begin construction on their own SDD-305s within the next year.
There! She's finally done! Woo hoo!
