Much of the county where I grew up looks like this:

I love open spaces. Hate being in the city, everything is so close together.

I grew up in a "small" village, and currently live in a "big" city... I love my city and village, but open spaces are so much cooler indeed.

I really want to move out west when I'm able. So much wide open spaces, clear skies... I've got horizon fever.

The water in that one pic of mine is actually a lake. We had an even bigger lake (Lake Erie) about 25 miles away. I currently live just about three blocks from Lake Erie as well, but in a different state, in a city that's a suburb of a major city.

To be honest, I prefer city and suburban living to rural living. I felt kind of isolated out in the country as I approached adulthood, and the couple of times I've tried rural or small-town living as an adult, I've been unhappy with it. I like having people close by and having the option of walking to places I want to go -- like out for dinner, drinks, or coffee, or to the library.

The one wide-open thing I do feel the need for, however, is a large-ish body of water nearby, whether it's a lake, a bay or an ocean. I don't like feeling landlocked. As long as I have something like that within... well, it doesn't have to be walking distance, but let's say a 20-minute drive or something... then I'm good.

I like being alone, and no one else around so the more open space with less people... a-okay with me.

Definitely different tastes with different people. I've lived in major cities or their suburbs for most of the past 30 years, and consider myself a city girl now.

I consider myself lucky that I don't have a building across from my appartment. I look out onto the old church and a big square which sorta gives the feeling of open space (within the limits of the city). Lots of green to be had.

I grew up in a small city (population of ~30.000) but it had lots of farms and pastures nearby in which we played as children. Unfortunately, as I grew up the city became larger too and by the time I was in my teens most of the grasslands we used to play in had been turned into new neighborhoods. There are still trails along the water though (with some pastures and cattle across it) and beyond the newer neighborhoods are still some pastures, so it's not all bad. Plus, once you get out of the city there are lots of small towns with farms so there's plenty of green and animals around.

And you know, the distances in my country are nothing compared to the US so you're out of the city pretty fast! As a matter of fact, as a teen I used to skate along the beltway on my inline skates or, in the cold winters, skate around/through the city and to neighboring towns/cities over the ice of ditches, creeks, rivers and lakes, so I basically had the best of both worlds with city life and what passes as open spaces/nature in my country.
                          Unmade Plans (WIP: 11/20):
Sam's life takes a turn in an unexpected direction when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to keep the baby and raise it on her own will alter her life forever. Relationships are put to the test, especially the one between her and Jack. She doesn't know what to expect from him and he surprises her at every turn.

Those are the Palouse Hills, named after the Palouse Indians. The most famous thing named for the Indians are Appaloosa horses. The hills are wind-blown dirt and very fertile. They're also very steep in places. The self-leveling combine was invented to farm the hills (standard combines tip over).

This is an aerial view of my home town.

Not much open water, nor many trees (outside the town itself, that is). It was a great place to grow up, but there are basically no jobs in my field there (no pun intended), so continuing to live there as an adult was never an option.
