Purple in the Dictionary of Phrase & Fable:

A synonym for the rank of Roman emperor, derived from the colour of the emperor's dyed woollen robe, hence phrases such as "raised to the purple". Purple robes were a mark of dignity among the ancient Greeks and Romans and were worn by kings, magistrates, and military commanders, hence purple became a symbol of luxury and power. It was obtained from shellfish (Buccinum, Murex), and the deep colour was termed purpura (from the name of one of these molluscs). The famous Tyrian purple was made from a mixture of these shellfish and was very costly to produce. Differing shades were obtained by various combinations and methods. Since Roman times, purple was used in the insignia of emperors, kinds and prelates, and a priest is said to be raised to the purple when he is created Cardinal, though his insignia are actually red.
