    i LOVE dexter

it's a show that keeps you guessing from week to week, i identify with the dark humor and it doesn't bug me, and no one is 'safe'. Even to the point that, should they end the show, it's very possible that Dexter himself could die.

great writing, great characters, ones that are fantastically flawed but still very likable and real

and, often, when you get right down to it, the content could be worse, sex and violence wise. what makes it scary - at times - isn't the gore but the brilliant performances.

Yeah, that's exactly what I like about Dexter! But, I think, had it not been for this dark humor in the beginning I wouldn't have gotten into it. That's a little bit what I'm missing with SGU, something that has me in its grasp and doesn't let go, forcing me to continue watching it. If I don't care about the characters - something I hope will change -, then there has to be something else (plot, action, special effects etc.) which keeps me watching. I haven't found that something in SGU yet.

SGU is, imho, focusing so much on 'let's see what we can do and how we can imperil them' rather than developing the characters and getting us to care for them THEN imperiling them.

for example, with Rita, Dexter's wife....

        season 4 finale BIG spoilers

        Spoiler:
had Trinity have shown up in season two, would her death have been as shocking as it was in season four? we had two years to get to know her and care for her. we watched her struggle iwth Dexter and his quirks and life. we got to see her struggle with her ex and his issues...and so to see her die was a OMG moment. because we got to know her and care for her.

I understand what you mean. Having time to really get to know the character certainly helps when something happens that affects the character. The same reason why we were deeply moved when Carson or Janet died or Elizabeth was taken by the Asurans was also the reason for our reaction to Rita's situation: we cared about them. But beginning to care sometimes takes a lot of time, especially when the characters themselves are not instantly compelling like Daniel or Jack or Carson were. So until we care (or perhaps not) we have to have something that captures our interest like action or special effects or plot.

and, to me at least, in the case of universe, what we've gotten is seemingly endless whinging, complaining, interpersonal bickering and petty snarkery.

the general plot of the show hasn't advanced much in 10 episodes beyond 'they're trapped and need to get home' and...from the POV of a person that has to put up with a lot of dwama on a daily basis, it's not fun or enjoyable to watch. maybe if i was intrigued about the ship or what might be out there I'd feel more inclined to tune in and watch.

Right now, I don't think i can tolerate the who's sleeping with whom and who's upset with whom junk to see if there's really a story about adventure and exploration and survival.

Well, like I said, I have not watched the entire first half of the season because it hasn't aired yet here in continental Europe, but I'm certainly beginning to understand your concerns the more I watch. Perhaps the later half of season one will have more compelling elements in it. Will you watch?

A little more action would certainly help make it more interesting. Right now, it's a bit like if the BSG writers put such an episode like Unfinished Business right into the first season after the pilot. It wouldn't have worked without us caring for the characters.

I honestly don't know. Part of me doesn't want to watch. I find all the dwama exhausting and distasteful and frustrating, not to mention ham fisted and contrived. I have to deal with it 40 hours a week and I want my evening entertainment to engage me and fire the imagination...not bring back memories of the crud I deal with during the day.

I really don't give a darn if these people get home, they frankly annoy me so much I'd be tempted to reprogram the destiny just to keep them out of my hair

I think it's along the line of....I stopped watching ghost whisperer last year after the whole 'killing off the hubby, but he's not really dead' stunt they pulled..and i see a lot of the stuff on SGU the same way. contrived plot devices to ramp up 'interest' and all it creates is a mess.

This one’s a doozy. Respectfully speaking, even though I love Atlantis, we are moving into the seasons of the show that I like the least. It took a while for me to choose a favorite episode. After thinking about it, I realized why. Even though there are a lot of episodes that give me most of what I want, there are no episodes that give me all of what I wanted from this show in it’s latter seasons (4 & 5). They tried some new things starting in season 4 with new camera angles, less lighting, newly added characters, etc. Some of these things worked in how they were used (to me), and some didn’t. Overall, the season is hit-and-miss for me, but that’s beside the point. I am not here to do a season 4 review (thankfully ).

To answer the question of which show is my favorite during season 4, it ends up being an issue of which episode gave me what I loved to watch SGA for the most. So, any episode that didn’t have at least 5 out of the main 7 that I liked (Sheppard, Teyla, Weir, Carson, Ronon, McKay, and Ford (Yes, Ford. I don’t think that his character was a mistake at all. I think that the writers just couldn’t/didn’t want to write for him. That’s unfortunate.)) is automatically disqualified. I watch shows mainly for the characters. It begins and ends with the characters. There are numerous shows set in space, have action, humor, etc., but I personally picked Atlantis because I wanted to see those (the main 7 plus Lorne and Zelenka sometimes) characters and follow their journey through space. I wanted to see them in action (especially Teyla, that’s a subject for another time too, though. I think I‘ll be visiting the “why was Teyla underused“ thread again), and I loved their humor, etc. There’s a lot for me to say; but ultimately, I happily settled on The Kindred Part 2 as my favorite episode for season 4 of Atlantis.

Don’t get me wrong, there were episodes that I really liked that didn’t have at least 5 out of the 7. Doppelganger, The Seer, Lifeline, and a few others come to mind. I’m just saying that I like my old team(s), and that’s what I prefer.

I picked The Kindred Part 2 because for once (that’s what it feels like) TPTB of Atlantis listened to the fans and gave us back Dr. Carson Beckett. He should have never left in the first place, in my opinion. The episode was well-written for the most part, and the cast chemistry was awesome as always. I like how Carson was re-introduced into the show and how his strong friendship with McKay was respected. It’s too bad that more couldn’t have been done with Carson (especially in season 5), but I think it’s great that we Carson fans got The Kindred Part 2. It’s one of the most watched episodes in my season 4 DVD box set of the Atlantis.

Thanks for putting up with the long post.

UPDATE: Teyla was in Lifeline. So, it counts as having 5/7. I remembered Ronon's moment with Weir, but I forgot Teyla. Poor Teyla.

                  Cheers,

                  Atlantis4Life

                    Great podcast guys!

I would love if you had included a quibbles section for these Season reviews. The reason I mention it....in the ep where the Repli team are killed, as "our" Rodney is settling in back home after the event, I noticed that he was wearing the old style Atlantis uniform. As it turned out, Joe Mallozzi answered my query saying it was a wardrobe malfunction...but wouldn't it have been cool if the Repli Rodney had returned and teams got mixed up!!!

Keep up the good work team!

As europe will now be behind, you shall sadly be missing my dulcet tones until we catch up again!!

                    Best to all

Ha! That's a great goof that I never spotted. And I just rewatched "This Mortal Coil" last week for the discussion.

I definitely encourage U.K.ers to call in with episode feedback after they've seen it. We'll still include it in the Listener Mail segment at the end of the show, even if its a couple of weeks after that ep was in the main discussion.

I'd love to hear what you guys thought of the new Dr Who (altho when does it air in the US?).
Personally, I loved it! Steven Moffat rocks (altho we knew that since Blink). And Matt Smith did a great job - still a lot of 10th Dr in there, I'm interested to see where he goes with it when the character is all his.

Stargate Universe has returned with a vengeance, offering up a mid-season premiere with action, effects … and aliens! Darren and David talk about “Space” in this week’s installment of the GateWorld Podcast, from the very alien aliens to Rush’s return, from the strength of our shields to Chloe’s new-found inquisitiveness. I just wanted to add an opinion. And please do not take this as a flame, a rant nor an attack, it is an opinion.

You have lost a long time listener. Me.

I've listed to the podcast since like, episode 13 or 14. Loved it. It provided a nice insight into the SG world, the cast, crew, all kinds of information and everything.

                                Until The SGU "Space" episode podcast. Why? This entire "Gateworld is changing, no more bad mouthing SGU". Now, I understand wanting legitimate discussion of it. Not just unintelligent ramblings or flames or arguing. I get that. But the entire fact that you are overlooking a major flaw in this, really kind of didn't sit well with me;

Did you stop to think that, with so many people unhappy with SG:U maybe something is actually wrong with the show? Even the ratings for "Space" dropped. And it was a pretty good episode. Yes, I enjoy SGU. Its..different. And while I do miss Atlantis, I'll watch SGU. However, a lot, and you can see a lot of people are unhappy with it. I can't justify calling you guys fanboys, hell I'm a fanboy. I'm a total SG nerd, I adore Star Trek, Doctor Who, god knows how many other shows, games and more. So when I say I understand and "get" that undying love for a franchise, you know I'm sincere.

But this entire heavy handed moderation of this, was handled badly. Unless people were going truly out of hand with like, real world death threats or something, then letting some people vent some frustration and dislike in the form of text on the internet, seems like a fairly easy thing to deal with. I can see how it might be a swamp of negativity to wade through, but really guys, it sounds like the scorned school teacher calling out the class for talking when they shouldn't have and placing further restrictions on them.

Is it a bad show? That is not my place to say. But I do know, if the majority of people have a similar minded opinion, they all can't be wrong now can they? Law of averages teaches us that much. With ratings going lower and lower, how long can this even continue?

And as most people have said, and will say again, can I have my Atlantis back now?
