I am not sure. The price seems good. They are new so I would also be interested in knowing more about them.

Are you asking if JumpCon is a fan-run convention? The people running it are all professionals, at least it seems that's way it seems to me from what I can gather from one of the posts in the JumpCon forum. So I'd call it a commercial con.

It does look like they're trying to incorporate the best features of the various cons out there, both commercial and fan-run. It's an interesting concept. They sell tickets for all these guests before the con. Then they schedule the guests based on the tickets sold. So, they're basing a lot of the con on pre-sales.

However...

I wonder how they intend to make any money with the huge lineup, a con a week, the many smaller cities, and the many things they're having the actors to commit to. Actors have to attend a breakfast, lunch, dinner, autograph session and 2 photo ops each day (no breakfast on Friday). Some are going to participate in a 2-3 hour Celebrity Scifi game. Some are going to do some post dinner entertaining.

I guess the actors don't mind doing all that for whatever they're making for the event. They were going to have to eat anyway and if it's with, at the maximum, 8 fans, then getting paid for that is a pretty good deal. Seems to me the actors are going to do as much running around as the fans usually have to do.

While Jumpcon seems to have all these actor/fan interactions, on LiveJournal they post on their profile that "Jumpcon is autograph conventions."

At a Creation con, the actor usually appears just for one day, has one photo op and one autograph session. For a few, a Fri or Sat night cabaret appearance. I see that a lot of the actors are the type that usually sit at a table all day interacting with the fans, so it might not seem like much more work for them. I hope they're getting paid more for more work.

The JumpCon website leaves something to be desired. To me, it's confusing and not very well laid out. Supposedly, it was designed by a professional web design company. I checked out the company's other sites, and they're not very well done, either. I did this a while ago, and I'm not sure how I figured out what the design company was. Maybe I read it on one of the many forum posts.

For example, the General Rules and Policies are listed on the Dealer's Room page. The rules aren't for the Dealers, they're for the con attendees. I only saw it because I was checking out all the pages AND I remembered to scroll down.

And who exactly is running these events? It's not readily apparent. It's not in the About Us section. There isn't anything about them in the Forum pages, at least not in a Sticky at the top of the message board. All I know are screen names. I have to assume that the screen names who answer like they are part of the con staff actually are because there isn't any place where you even see who are the official screen names. From a YouTube video, I guess the name of The Emperor is Shane.

There are many questions left unanswered and while I read a lot of the forum discussions, I shouldn't have to be expected to wade thru all the posts trying to find the answers to my questions.

It'll be great if they can make a go of it, more competition is good. I hope they don't saturate the market, though. I hope this doesn't put a dent in some of the fan run conventions. And I want my favorite actors to be able to make some money doing these things.

(On an off-topic "damn it!" note, Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell will be at cons in my area twice, but I'm out of town both times. Gah!)
