I waited quite a while before I started watching season 3 cause Rose, the Doctor's companion and my fave, was no longer going to be there (Billie Piper wanted to leave) ... I didn't know what to think of Martha, the new companion, but she grew on me ... fast, really fast.

It's funny, both Dr. Who and SGA lost my favorite characters, but I continue to like one while the other has fallen flat. I'm sure I don't have to clarify which is which.

Well, in Doctor Who, there's actual emotional fallout from characters leaving. *gasps at the concept* And they're replaced by new characters that are cool. (I actually like Martha a lot better. ) SGA? Um, not so much.

season 1 is my favorite. They were on their own and cut off from Earth. Sheppard was placed in his position after the colonel died. Teyla was useful, her people were in a number of eps. The wraith were scary and Dr. McKay wasn't the only genius there.

What I wonder some times about is the fact that the things so many people are complaining about, others find perfectly acceptable and some even love it. What am I doing wrong? What is wrong with my viewership? Why am I not satisfied? I am not a over the top demanding. I like a good story, and even though one of my favorite character was killed/written off, I was willing to give it a chance. I find that I have wasted much of my time.

S1: Sheppard's crimes were not that obvious, laws of physics were mostly obeyed, Elizabeth was really in charge, Zelenka's crush on her felt refreshing and Carson was cute too

I agree about season 1. I like that they where out there alone and had to survive. There was an element of danger all the time. Once they could go to earth, Atlantis just became an another SG post.

As for Doctor Who. I got hooked during the Ninth Doctor time. I just started watching every week till I got pretty addicted. Can't wait for the new season to start.

Oh goddess, I just finished watching Dr. Who season 3... Holy hell, now that was a rollercoaster-ride worth mentioning! Jee, I was literally on the edge of my seat, excited as hell. Haven't felt like that in ages.

The soundtrack is on repeat, and I feel great as a Whovian.

Everything Dr. Who gave me - excitement, great storytelling, brilliant character development, awesome effects without killing the budget, emotions, continuity, 3D characters even if they appeared only once in an episode, magic - SGA failed to give me in season 4.

That's because the writers are talented, the actors can do the job properly and the show runners give the fans what they want IMO anyway

I haven't seen Dr. Who yet. There are however so many confusing DVD releases. Just of the top of my head there are "Beneath the Surface" and "Complete Davros Collection" or something like this. I wouldn't know where to start. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks. Will ask Reefgirl then. You already helped a lot. I didn't know that there was an old series and a new one. I thought as the longest running sci-fi show it was one and the same show.

Ok, I'm putting my answers under the spoilers because it's OT

Spoiler:

It really doesn't matter where you start with Dr Who because there is no arc, so to speak, each story is seperate from the rest, sometimes (in Classic Who (the stuff before Chris Ecclestone and David Tennant) they do have running themes) If you really want to start at the beginning then William Hartnell's First Doctor is the place to begin but it was made in the 60's the stories, SFX and quality is not the best. I started watching Dr Who with the Fourth Doctor and I'm still watching now, to be honest Classic Who is cheesy, it doesn't have the sophistication of the New Who because it didn't have the money or the technology it does now but it's still fun to watch. If you're thinking if getting some of the DVD set's go for your favourite villan if you don't have a favourite Doctor, the Complete Davros collection will be about the Daleks as Davros was their creator. There was only one 8th Doctor filmed for TV that was the Dr Who TV movie, but there are books and CD's, if you want my opinion I'd start with either the 4th or 5th Doctor and go on from there
