from my understanding, what got s11 cancelled was that scifi was paying $X per episode. they wanted to be paid $Z, mgm said 'no, we wont' pay more than $Y' and an impasse was reached

If mgm wants s5 badly enough, they just might pony up whatever scifi demands to air it
Oh... I see. I think I had it backwards then. For some reason, I thought MGM would ask for a specific price from SciFi for the right to broadcast Stargate SG-1, and SciFi thought it would be too high. I thought SciFi got their $$ from ad dollars, and that the production company got their $$ from the network.

Basically, I thought it worked the same way as syndication, only with more money involved. How then does MGM make their money back?

ETA: This is on-topic, because the same logic would then be applied to Atlantis' S5.

You got it right. Stargate costs more to make each season, season 11 ended up costing more money that Sci Fi were willing to pay, and MGM weren't willing to charge less, so the show was not renewed.

That made me think of another point - the third series. If MGM and/or skiffy is truly interested in making series 3 they may want to keep Atlantis on the air to serve as a bridge to keep interest. Therefore skiffy may be more forgiving with Atlantis ratings or MGM may sell Atlantis to skiffy for lower prices just to keep it on the air in the meantime.

This all depends on whether they actually make series 3, of course. Right now I'm treating it like BSG's "Caprica" - all talk.

I sure post a lot about renewal, ratings, and cancellation of Atlantis. It's funny though - I realized that it doesn't matter what happens to Atlantis if I'm not interested in watching it anymore. It could get renewed out to s10 like SG1 but it won't matter to me if I stop watching during or after s4. Out of sight, out of mind.

I guess we'll have to go back to Carter thrashing to keep the Anti Season 4 Thread on topic.

Hey, fellow Antis, have you seen the IESB videos? LOL, I started watching part 1 and had to stop when Carter cheerleader Mallozzi started saying all that multifaceted crap again. Jeez, the guy will ruin the show.

I saw that and I couldn't help but wonder if those reporters actually watch the show. The crickets chirping while they were waiting for someone to think of a question got deafening at times. David H, bless him, doesn't seem to be able to tolerate silence for long, so he kept trying to fill the gaps. It was downright embarassing at times. They seemed to only know what they had been told or read in a press release which, of course, focused on Carter. Then there was RL, obviously in a certain condition, so they focused on that, but oddly had little to say about Teyla and how her pregnancy arc would play out.

Could anyone else have thought of a few questions to fill the gaps? Altogether odd to me, but then I'm frequently confused.

As I said, I watched part 1 only, but from what I saw, yeah, the reporters seemed completely clueless. Then again, so is Mallozzi.

Crossover/Earth-based eps: never had a problem with both, but is it a good idea now that Carter joined SGA? She is a big SG-1 crossover after all.
I picked this one because I have generally loved crossover episodes in the past, not just in Stargate, but in all the shows I watched. But they were always temporary crossovers and didn't change the casts of either show. I just got to watch them all play together for an episode, which I loved. This time around, not so much. I wanted Atlantis to have the chance to stand on its own.

I never minded the crossover episodes. I liked Pegasus Project.

I have an objection to *any* SG-1 character (not necessarily just Carter) coming over and displacing an already established character.

Same here. Not to mention that tossing Carter on SGA will make the series more expensive since she's been around for what, ten years? Maybe TPTB had to ditch two SGA main characters to afford Carter on Atlantis, who knows? Anyway, I don't see SGA going much further with the infusion of the so called SG-1 elements. The premise of the show is already broken. Now it's just a matter of setting the date, IMO.

I'm not sure how contracts work. But if she was already under contract they'd have to pay her anyway, right?

I think that in S5 we just may well see Weir back or, if not Weir, another character who is less expensive. Which means yet more changes on the horizon.

Yeah, but AT is an SG-1 cost that SGA's budget will have to face now, right? Assuming SGA's budget remained unaltered, and that the penalty for rescinding AT's contract was huge, cutting costs on Atlantis may have been required... All anti-speculation, of course.

Y'know, the contract thing is irking me slightly already. JM already said that AT had contract, so they approached her *first* if she'd like to do some crossovers. If she wouldn't they would've found someone different. *shrug* I doubt there would be penalties if both parties agreed on cancelling it. And hey, my working contract has 2 years...I was ditched last month (not my fault) so I leave work at the end of July. It should be like that everywhere.

But then she would be the one breaking the contract. In this case, they wouldn't have to buy her out of it (right?), thus having the means to keep SGA's cast intact, or to introduce new regular characters. Either way, it seems to me SG-1's pending obligations were transferred to SGA giving TPTB the excuse they needed to mess with the show. SG-1: The Curse.
