The Anti Season 4 Thread (Spoilers). For complaints and misgivings ONLY.
No, not specifically.
That is one of the main things I was thinking about, the writing. The whole Atlantis-feel is gone and has been replaced with something that I no longer recognize.
I think when season one ended and they were in contact with Earth it was the worse direction for the show to take. Honestly, they should have had Atlantis get themselves out of the hole they were in but no SGC had to come to the rescue.
I feel so sad about the wasted opportunities, the show could have been so much more then the mediocre 'cliched' rubbish it has become.

I disagree with that. I don't think they every found the 'Atlantis Feeling'. Call me a cynic (or troll depending on Madeline's view of this post), but the series has failed to ever capture the wonder we first felt from those early episodes. The awe, wonder, and excitement of a huge unexplored alien city. The biggest character in the series is the city itself, and it's little more than a writers gimmick.
IMO, get exploring the city more, or at least make the exploration part of every episode.

Yup, getting back in touch with Earth so soon was just plane dumb.

TPTB's may not have found it, but I always had a warm, fuzzy feeling when I watched Atlantis... a little bit of sparking excitement that grew depending on the episode. Can't say I have felt any of that recently with any of the episodes.
One of my very first posts on GW went something like this...
"I am blown away by Atlantis it is so fresh and the actors seem to fit so well, I thought at first in my previous visites to this site from reading some of the spoilers that it was only O.K but wow I really love it . Anyway that's me, hi again, bye for now."
It was in the Welcome new members thread in off-topic.... back in 2005.
I can't believe I have gone from that kind of awe to this kind of sadness. Yeah it is a show but then I cried when Buffy and Angel ended so I am not about to start changing my obsessive nature in caring about fictional TV shows/characters now.
I totally agree that getting into contact with earth was the worst decision. Ever!
I was listening to Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison this evening, and a song that I hadn't really noted before caught my attention. I think it should be featured in the Stinky Socks Mix for all those characters that the TPTB dropped like a hot potato. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a youtube video or anything else...
Johnny Cash - Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart
Spoiler:
From the backdoor of your life you swept me out dear
In the bread line of your dreams I lost my place
At the table of your love I got the brush off
At the Indianapolis of your heart I lost the race
I've been washed down the sink of your conscience
In the theater of your love I lost my part
And now you say you've got me out of your conscience
I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart
In the garbage disposal of you dreams I've been ground up dear
On the river of your plans I'm up the creek
Up the elevator of your future I've been shafted
On the calendar of your events I'm last week
I've been washed down the sink of your conscience
In the theater of your love I lost my part
And now you say you've got me out of your conscience
I've been flushed from the bathroom of your heart
I'm particularly fond of the lines "Up the elevator of your future I've been shafted" and "In the garbage disposal of your dreams I've been ground up dear". Although "In the theater of your love I lost my part" is sadly fitting also.
Sparky Shipper. Genetically predisposed to being stubborn... really pesky.
I think Weir was the biggest problem, she was good in season one but nothing was carried through and by the time the season ended she and Sheppard were best buddies... it makes me wonder what kind of show we would have had now if that hadn't of happened, if the writers had of kept some of that antagonism between them instead of going for the whole best buds or even in some people's minds Shipping them. (Well lets be honest if Adrift was anymore blatant then Sheppard would have curled up on her hospital gurney )
Agreed, and I think there should have been more conflict, period. More between the civilians and military, more between Rodney and those around him when he steps over the line, more between Teyla and Ronon and the Earth team. I think the latter could be especially interesting, but all we got was their comments in Trinity and nothing more. I don't want everyone to be at each others' throats all the time, but as it stands everyone is way too chummy with each other. Look at the "conflict" when Carter took command, some glaring from Ronon and that's it.
As for Carson, said it before he was never given a good enough reasons to go off world so it never worked for me, he seemed to be just slotted into eps rather then 'needed' in eps.
Carson could have had a great arc if TPTB had used him more in regards to the retrovirus. He developed the damn thing and he obviously had some hesitation over whether or not it was morally correct to use it. Too bad TPTB had him in the background and had him voice his concerns only once or twice.

Yeah, the awe element is largely gone from the show. That was one of the big things that sucked me into the show in the first place. Everything was fresh and new. Now when the team meets new people instead of getting someone cool and interesting we get people like Lucius and superficially-developed people like the Travelers. The wraith were boring seasons ago because TPTB kept their culture too mysterious and didn't personalize them. The Asurans seem to be going the same route - tell us just enough about them but then give us nothing new outside of "they want to kill us and/or get to earth." It gets old really fast.

They should have done this seasons ago, unfortunately. And it would have been a great way give Weir more to do. Instead we got some throwaway line in Pegasus Project about how they had explored a little more than 50% of the city. Tell, don't show.

But Pegasus Project wasn't an Atlantis episode. So what I had to watch SG1 to know that.
From the newer eps I have to say it seems like tptb are trying, well for them; but it is also coming off heavy handed now, take the tags to eps (TEAM/character moments to wrap up eps and the like) they have gone from practically none to every ep having them now.
Less is more! Don't they know this? It feels like armature writing hour to me when they include those moments in every ep... we should be careful what we ask for, when they do eventually get around to listening they go in boots and all.
Carson will

Spoiler:
Weir is going to die (that's one way to "move her character in a new direction" ) and Carson is going to be a clone or something...only to also die after his 2 ep arc. Because writing for dead people is so much easier than writing for live ones!!! O_O

Hey they dug up Buffy after she died! If tptb can borrow ideas from every other show on TV... hmm, come to think of it Tabula Rasa was the name of a Buffy ep where folks lose their memory... is that what the phase means? Seems too obvious even for tptb.
I am surprised Bates...
Spoiler:
is still alive I could have sworn the ending there *before they realised they needed 'tags' * put him in the dead... yep he is dead category.
It is. It is. *does happy dance*
I'm especially happy that it was Coop's episode that got the lowest Stargate live ratings!!!
BTW I'm sure they'll spin it with it was already leaked instead of realizing that the low rating was mainly due to the episode being a horrible SG-1 re-hash. Let's make a poll - Travelers live ratings less than 0.7?
My bet is that 0.9 won't stay the record for the lowest rating for very long. 0.7 could very well be the magic number for one of the following episodes.
Yeah, TPTB were so eager to "shake up" a fine show. Let's see what they do now... 'cause now there is a problem which needs actual fixing.
True. Still waiting for them to admit they have a problem and that they created it. Having the lowest ratings in the history of the franchise can hardly be a reason for a celebration and patting on the back for a job well-done.
