yeah. That's why i hate lucille ball, she was so much the butt of the joke that i find it too painful to watch

More than once, not just during sga, but sg1 as well, we've seen what i feel is the writers projecting a bit. Sam forgiving pete, Lee being the studmuffin, vala throwing herself all over daniel.

Then add in those annying IRR eps, the silliness of The Tower, i just shake my head and mutter 'oh grow up' as i watch
Where in the World is George Hammond?

We've all been shouting that quite a bit I think over the last 2 years. I think what we have here is a basic failure to communicate understand each other. *ignores Cool Hand Luke reference*

Meaning, we the fans who want a mature show v. the fans who want juvenile humor. I think, sadly, TPTB fall into the later category. I see the show moving more and more in that direction, and listening to the commentaries I have yet to hear a director or writer advocate the mature approach. They have said they did market research. Obviously the participants must have agreed with them.

I think they largely dismiss the online fans. They openly at times acknowledge knowing what we generally think but seem to snicker at some of our opinions and then just ignore them. There's no way of knowing if we represent the majority. I guess we're about to find out.

On the other hand, maybe it's my age but I thought Vala was great and am looking forward to Travelers. Please don't hate me. I think a bit of risque action is okay if you don't take it seriously. It will be interesting to see a woman who doesn't rip her clothes off the moment Shep walks in. And it looks like Joe and Jill have a ton of chemistry. Sour grapes because my ship didn't sail? Probably. But I figure he deserves a bit of fun. He's been a good boy for ages now.

travelers being 'good' or 'bad' will all be in the eye and sentiment of the general viewer.

I know some that felt that Talion was just horrible and massacred the character of teal'c...but seeing his brutality didn't bug me because, in my heart, i always knew that he was a vicious man and that he had done truly atrotious things in his past.

it was a shock to actually see how cruel he could be, but it didn't destroy him for me. Aboout the only thing aboout that eps that rang me wrong was the lack of censure from his friends at his actions

Travelers will largely depend on how it's handled. With kid gloves, or with all the tact and skill of a sledge hammer

Maybe that's why the "old" SG-1 did so well, ya think? It wasn't just Jack O'Neill, either. Everybody had great lines, Daniel especially- talk about snark!

See, I don't get this "market research." If you look at the ratings/viewership, SG-1 seemed to improve every year until 9/10 until they went into a nosedive. There's a whole thread elsewhere on this topic. Now they want to apply the same formula to Atlantis. It's disappointing to me and makes no sense at all. Why repeat a failed formula and ignore the one that worked? Atlantis will be just like every other sci-fi series out there and, like every other, it will fail. It might get a Season 5 with the help of curious SG-1 fans, but I don't think they will have a lasting impact.

I equate S9 & 10 of SG-1 and now S4 of SGA - something akin to the fiasco that was the "new" Coke. Same name brand, same bottle - but entirely different flavor. Which people disliked so much - they went back to the original formula.

I can only hope that TPTB listen to the fans and bring back the "old" Coke.

old, 'classic' sg1 was just that, classy. You could have snark without being cruel. good humored fun and games instead of whack over the head 'humor'

it was, to me, a kinder, gentler show

and it had an emotional connection that SGA has never achieved, for me anyway. The ingredients are there, but not much else

I *loved* SG-1 S1-8. LOVED IT. S9 &10, not so much. But I'm probably biased because I felt Sam Carter got shafted.

I love SGA S1-3. When I hear that the cast wasn't "gelling" I'm like .. WTF? What show was I watching for 3 years? And now it's become this weird hybrid of SG-1/SGA and is much 'darker' (which really wasn't necessary) because 'darker' doesn't mean 'better'.

I was going to say SG-1 seasons 1-8 were classy, too. However, the cognitive dissonance between putting "classy" and "O'Neill" in the same paragraph was something I couldn't quite work through....

                      But, it's true.

I don't get it either. Never have. You know that you can prove anything you want to with a poll or a focus group. Politicians do it all the time. I've had people call with poll questions that I literally could not answer because they were so slanted in a certain direction. My favorite is "do you like the direction in which the country is moving?" Depending on who's president I might think he is not liberal enough/too liberal even if I belong to the same party, but they are going to assume certain things if I say I don't like what he's doing. Confusing? Well yeah. And that is what I see these PTB doing. They want a certain outcome and by George they are going to get it. Whether it's a certain blog that berates anyone who hasn't drunk the Kool Aid to commentaries that all spout the party line until someone starts to agree. *takes deep breath*

I'm not typical here for a number of reasons, but I never really got into SG-1. I watched because my husband did, often reading while it was on. I looked up when Jack made a funny. But from the pilot I loved loved the characters on SGA. I thought they "gelled" right from the beginning, and I didn't have to be told that they were a family. I find all this touchy feely stuff nowadays to be unnecessary. Tell me one more time that Sheppard will die for his friends and I might have to hit something. I think he's proven that time and time again.

How about writing some good stories that interest me? Even though I am not dreading Travelers and think Harmony sounds cute, the rest of it is about to make me revisit my lunch. I also don't understand the dark turn. Turn the lights back on durn it!

Does that make me the anti-anti from the rest of you guys? You need someone like me to keep a balance. LOL

SG-1 ended to me back in season 7. Season 8 was quite strange, and seasons 9 and 10 were, in fact, a different show. And now, it seems, it's SGA's turn to become Atlantis Command.

i can see the 'not gelling' comment, but honestly, i feel that it has more to do with writing than anything else. Actors can only work with what they're given. And if they're given stories that are all plot, action and effects adn no emotion, well then they'll have no emotion with each other.

the show has to have a heart. And a heart isn't one particular character or actor, at least not to me. it's a general attitude of caring and fun and emotion.

and, at least to me, that's something sga has lacked since the beginning. Beyond Lorne, i'm not emotionally attached to any of the characters. they can live or die and i don't care. Because they have been written so flat that they are just cardboard cutouts most of the time
