Yeah, I mean, Real World has "Weir Development" written all over it, just like Common Ground is for Sheppard and McKay & Mrs Miller and Tao of Rodney for McKay (and I know Sateda waas supposed to be this for Ronon, but unfortunately it failed miserably.). But they also had plenty of hcaracter moments in episodes like Misbegotten and No Man's Land for Weir, or Echoes - not to mention Sunday, that managed to be the most character-centric piece ever in SGA and one of the biggest in the Stargate franchise, without focusing on one character.
The question is whether they will continue in this direction. Which I'm not so sure, cos it seems their first and foremost mission statement is to make an action-adventure popcorn show. Which, as was said, can be fnu for some but frustrating for others, because it's exactly those episodes I mentioned earlier that prove that sGA can be so much more than that and still be SGA.
        Very good points.

I think it's *possible* for them to do it. They did it quite well with SG-1 for most of the time the show was on the air I think...really giving dimension and depth to them all. Even to Teal'c, who I feel is the most 2D person of the group...they infused a quirky personality with an offbeat sense of humor.

And I agree strongly about Echoes, which I think was incredibly well done. It showcased how close they are together in a very natural manner.

I think this is their own personal hurdle. I believe that if they can add the depth and backstory and a little more insight on how they each think and feel, weaving it a little at a time so that it's done naturally, I think they'd knock it out of the park because right now the characters are quite 2D and need a bit more substance.

Perhaps what happens to them in season 4 will do that...or perhaps it'll highlight the cracks in the armor even further...only time will tell.

I'll be honest, I think some of the character development in SG1 is due to the actors and their use of subtext gestures, looks etc., more than anything solidly written in the script. Which is okay - if they do it it means they're good enough actors, it keeps a real sense of bonding, and it saves time in writing scenes that will be cut later anyway because the episode over-runs.
The problem I'ev aways felt in this departmetn with SGA is that the writers have started taking for granted their actors are going to do this, and so wrote little to none of these moments into the script. What they didn't take into account was that they had a group of new actors in SGA who didn't know each other that well and won't becessarily play off each other the same way the actors did in SG1. And it shows. As you said, most of the characters are very 2 dimensional, and in desperate need of more depth.

I've no doubt the stargate writers can do it. They jsut need to prioritise it. To realise that this bunch of actors doesn't have the same chemistry as the SG1 ones had, to throw in more intentionally written bits and most important, not cut them out.
They've started doing this, definitely. I think one of the reasons Gero and Binder are my favourite SGA writers while Cooper and Wright, who are compeltely brilliant in sG1 seem to fail, is because of that factor. Gero and Binder seem tod eliberately write these moments in, Cooper and Wright are used to relying on their actors to deliver it regardless. But all of them can do it, without a doubt.

          Question is, would they.

An I have to admit that based on the two first episodes of the season... I'm no longer so optimistic about it. Because, just like I said, even No Man's Land in it's 90-miles-per-hour speed managed to insert some real character moments. I remember watching this episode and complaining why can't they always write Weir this way - because I really didn't like her in season 2 - and hoping that this is the way they're going with her. And they did, in season 3, they definitely did. And she became from one of my least favourite characters to one of my favourites. But then I didn't feel this same way while watching Adrift and Lifeline, so I can't say I have the same optimism I did after Misbegotten.
Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?
          Yes, I am!

            Weir to make four appearances

            Saturday - September 22, 2007 | by David Read

Expect Dr. Elizabeth Weir to be back for four episodes total in Season Four of Stargate Atlantis, according to an exclusive interview with her portrayer, Torri Higginson.

Though four does not necessarily sum it up, according to Torri. "It kind of stretches it," she tells us. "Really two, but technically four ... the first one of that ("Adrift") I'm pretty much asleep through most of it. Some of my finest acting, let me tell you."

I guess 4 is the magic number in SGA . Ford takes the highway after 4 episodes. Weir the same. Am I the only one seeing a pattern?

Well I guess that ends all the speculation about Weir maybe showing up in more episodes in the second half of season 4. I know some were hanging on, hoping against hope that TPTB had some trick up their sleeves and would bring her back. Too bad really, Torri is one the best actors on the show, playing one of its more interesting characters.

Both Teryl and Paul are great actors but that did not help them much .

If the pattern has anything to do with season 4, yeah it does seem to have some significance . . . to me anyway. LOL.

Oh no doubt. I never saw Teryl (SGA fan only), but Paul was also good at bringing Beckett to life. I've always felt that Weir and Beckett were the two most interesting characters on SGA simply because they weren't stereotypical and seemed to have more depth to them. Lot of good it did them in the end. LOL.

Teryl died the same way Carson died. Or should I say, Carson died the same way Teryl died ?

Oh wow. This is depressing. I wasn't holding out much hope, but I did still have some.

All I'm hoping now is that they give us some closure. Having Ford possibly lost and forgotten out there was one thing.....please don't expect me to believe that they'd do the same with Elizabeth.

"Really 2, but technically 4." Uh huh.

Interesting how the article also called attention to Ford, his 4 eps, and how he's never been seen again. Maybe TPTB put that in all their actor dismissal clauses or something?
