Yeah, we don't want to be accused of sending biohazard material through the post or WMDs...

I'm a little worried if the "dark turn" isn't contained and the show turns into BSG. I can't say for sure, but some of the pictures and spoilers have me thinking. I liked this show because it had action, science, and humor. I don't really want an angst fest.

            Just my two cents.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. SGA will never be BSG, no matter how hard they try. The writting is just not on the same level. I agree, though SGA should just stick to the happy but happy with continuity and character development and occasional angst. Because I do love angst.

I agree with Ruined Puzzle - I highly doubt SGA is going to become an angst-fest. Heck, I have doubts over how dark this supposed dark turn will be. BSG can pull off angst and anguish well because RDM and co. take pains to actually develop their characters and implement continuity and consequences for actions. Unlike this PTB, who kill off Carson and forget even mentioning him the next episode, write the whole Michael fiasco and other questionable team decisions with zero overall consequences for them, and don't appear to have an idea on how to develop their male lead, much less most of the other characters on the show. Attempting to add lots of angst in this environment just wouldn't work well, IMO.

SGA is first and foremost popcorn fodder, which is great for those who like such shows and frustrating for those who want it to be something more.

Okay, so I *cough*previewed*cough* the first two eps. And I have to say
                  Spoiler:
the scenes with the doctor would have been much more powerful with Carson there. Nothing against Jewel (I loved her in Firefly), but the connection was with Carson.

It just brought home once again that cast changes don't always make for better television.

As much as I love BSG, IMHO I think it can go a little too dark for my tastes. I like tension and drama but I don't like feeling that I've barely survived viewing a tv show.

I think describing it as popcorn fodder is fairly apt and one of the things I don't care much for is that they really haven't gotten a handle on serious character development outside of McKay...and possibly Liz. Teyla, Ronon and Shep though...I don't really know who they are all that much. I feel like we're seeing the facade of who they are and not getting into the meat of it. There are some exceptions...like with Sateda, but those instances are few and far between.

Oh and then there's Shep's issues with clowns...but that's another story for another day.

So I think it could do with some angst and depth and dimension. It'd be nice to see the ice crack and get a look beyond what we're used to seeing. My concern for this season has always been can they do it? Can they take the characters and stories and infuse them with more substance and heart ache without it coming off as being cheesy?

I guess we'll have our answer soon enough.

They started doing this, tho, with season 3. And some of it wasn't even intentional. Yeah, I mean, Real World has "Weir Development" written all over it, just like Common Ground is for Sheppard and McKay & Mrs Miller and Tao of Rodney for McKay (and I know Sateda waas supposed to be this for Ronon, but unfortunately it failed miserably.). But they also had plenty of hcaracter moments in episodes like Misbegotten and No Man's Land for Weir, or Echoes - not to mention Sunday, that managed to be the most character-centric piece ever in SGA and one of the biggest in the Stargate franchise, without focusing on one character.
The question is whether they will continue in this direction. Which I'm not so sure, cos it seems their first and foremost mission statement is to make an action-adventure popcorn show. Which, as was said, can be fnu for some but frustrating for others, because it's exactly those episodes I mentioned earlier that prove that sGA can be so much more than that and still be SGA.
Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?
                      Yes, I am!

Totally agree- the reason I like Stargate is because it's one of those shows that I never thought would break my heart. And yet now it's busting out Farscape-wanna-be and BSG-lite moves like it's trying to gain credibility. I thought the show was doing great and attracting a lot of fans *because* it catered for people who loved the characters, action-adventure, the pure silliness at times, the snark and yes, the popcorn entertainment aspect of it. For me, Stargate was always supposed to be about fun and team bonds at its core. Messing with this formula makes me feel all tense and- like Uber said, I don't enjoy feeling like I've just barely made it through an ep that was all about the angst and the pain and the misery. There are shows catering for that already, I felt that SGA should continue doing what it's excelling in, rather than hopping out of the niche to do something that other shows have done better.

I agree with IrishEyes as well- the bond people have with the characters that have been established for a few seasons lends more emotional impact and simple *joy* to otherwise ordinary scenes because we love them and care about them and find them interesting. Getting another character in to carry the same basic role, without that background, ruins it for me. Maybe I'll get to like them after a while, but there will still be that nagging feeling that 'this would have been better with X doing the scene instead'. The relationships that the characters have with each other is something that can't be forced or replicated with newbies either, it just feels like the emotional core of it is missing.

I personally adored RW, CG and Tao of Rodney. Those are the kinds of eps I want to see, not the unfortunate trend that the first two of season 4 is displaying.
'I am frightened that the flame of hate will burn me
will scorch my pride, scar my heart
It will burn and I cannot put it out...'

I agree. SGA desperately needs some degree of continuity and character development. And it's virtually impossible to achieve those things by ejecting important characters into oblivion at every turn. Maybe that's what they mean by the show going dark?
