There were some serious problems with continuity editing in season four and five. And that's a problem with the producers, not the writers. The complete difference in Jennifer's backstory and characterization in Trio and Quarentine, for example! And in Trio? Sam breaks her leg and in the next episode it's all fine like it didn't happen when she should have been on crutches for weeks. In the earlier seasons they didn't have these kind of continuity errors. The producers were making sure the episodes went together beautifully and formed a plot arc. I agree with you that later it seemed like there was no plot arc, just a lot of choppy stories.

I agree that some was definitley down to the editing but a lot was also down to inconsistant writing.... I wondered at times if the writers actually consulted each other on what happened before... or did they just bring their own ideas into the mix without checking that it didn't contradict something that came before..

Why did Search and Rescue show blatently that John very clearly held feelings for Teyla when it was then kinda ignored later on..... why didn't the subsequent writers not bother to incorporate these feelings when they fabricated Kanaan.... this happened as early back as season 3... Teyla clearly says she has feelings for someone who is NOT an Athosian... but there was no mention of this again.. Gero did admit in an interview that she was indeed talking about John.. but again no follow up... it was all just ignored...

Well said girls. I couldn't have said it better myself. And what burned my *** is when they took what she said in Sunday and tried to make it sound like she was talking about Kanaan the whole time. Seriously! They could've done better.
I always thought that the writer had to get thing approved by the producers. So even if the writers didn't know... the producers did. I think the thought they were being clever and it backfired. IMO.

That could very well be the case. And it is more glaring with JT and with Jenn but the writers/producers/whoever have always had problems with continuity. Even back to S1 of SG-1. Jack nearly dies in one episode and is off and adventuring in the next. This happens a lot. Plus, like with SGA, there is never any emotional follow through.

Very dissapointing that they couldn't have followed their own books.

I just thought for the heck of it I would ask JM: 1. Would it be possible for Sheppard to feed Todd a nice tasty snack named Kanaan?

            and this was his answer:
            1. Unlikely. Sorry.

Just thought I would post this for those who don't read his blog much or anymore.

My impression is that different teams of writers were working at the same time. And they didn't actually see each others' works in progress. It's the job of the producers to have a production meeting and get everybody on the same page, and to make sure that scripts which are turned in at the same time don't contradict. It looks like the ball was dropped there bigtime.

And if different writers were on different pages about whether or not Teyla had feelings for John, or about anything else, it was the responsibilitiy of the producers to say, "Look, here's how it is. Everybody get with the program." It's a failure of leadership more than a failure of writing, JMO. Because the writers aren't supposed to make those decisions. The producers are. And this seems like it degenerated into competing groups writing whatever they felt like.

                  You naughty girl you.

To be honest... I'd rather see them both seperate at this time of the game. I want Teyla to be with John because she wants too. Not because the person she's with has died. IMO. They already have a better connection. They writers have pointed out that Kanaan goes off to Athos, with or without Torren and stays there for a period of time. Why is that.... besides wanting to be with their people. You don't hear her doing the same. She stays on Atlantis. I believe she thinks of Atlantis as her home now... eventhough she loves her people... I think there is a stronger reason why she doesnt' leave her new home.

Yes that's exactly what it felt like and by season 4 and 5 the show seemed directionless and this was definitley the fault of the producers... so with those same producers in charge of the movie... I've really got no interest in it.... the books interest me far more...
