John Sheppard/Teyla Emmagan Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread

First off, I would not have been ok with the McKeller even if John/Teyla came to be. I think it more had to do with tptb yanking us around there than anything else. Had they said, 'we're introducing a new character that we're planning on pairing with McKay, I would probably been ok with it. But they said, 'we're introducing a new character that we're planning on pairing with Ronon.' Then they changed their minds.

That being said, I'm going to say something that might make me a bad shipper. If they had handled Teyla/Kanaan better, more believably, then I would have had fewer problems with it than I currently do. If we had a throwaway line early (like episode 3 or 4) S4 saying Teyla was off to be with the other Athosians. Or if they mentioned that Teyla got with Kanaan because she needed a shoulder to cry on - something! Except all of a sudden her life long friend is now her tru luv...well, not.

I should say, I'm a fan of the characters first and the ships second. So, yeah. I guess I might be a bad shipper.

I don't think you're a bad shipper. Characters are what make 'ships...when you don't have proper development, it makes all 'ships suffer. Teyla (and her background) wasn't developed enough to understand why she hooked up with Kanaan. She doesn't, depsite her line in Missing, seem like the kind of person where things "just happened" Could it have been that she she was just saying that to Keller since she didn't know her that well? Maybe. But we'll never understand the reasoning of why she did things.

When you don't have enough info then you have to start tweaking canon to make sense. I understand where you are coming from, so don't worry.

Guys, sorry about the delay with the RR. RL is/has been a little busy for me. Besides work, I'm in the process of moving, so it has been a little crazy for me. I did finally started working on it today a little, so hopefully I have some time tomorrow too.

Moved house, & still got no internet at home. In at my sister's uni using her internet connection there- so shouldn't take too long.

Expanded my SG DVD collection recently (ah the benefits of having a job! )
Have added:
SG1 S3, 4, 5 & 7 (skipped 6 cos I already have it.) Got 4, 5 & 7 at the same time- got it in a sale, "buy 2 get 1 free" so 7 was free cos it got scanned last. wooot! (been watching them regularily- watched "the first ones" last night)
SG Children of the Gods- wasn't planning on it, but curiosity got the better of me. that & the fact i had $300 on me the day of the sale...........
SGA S3- replacing the crappy copy from China.

So now I nearly have the full collection! only need SG1 S8-10 & SGA S4! then i'll have both shows complete in good quality!

LandJrule, I know all too well about the moving the house thing and trying to get internet and everything else turn on. Very cool about your DVD collection. I have all the seasons of SGA myself. I got the fifth season at such a good price.

Lea, have fun! Be sure to have those earplugs ready for Elfie's Squeeing, LOL!! And say hey to MrsB for me... And of course hey to the thread mommy if you see her.

I thought you knew! That was when, in a moment of grief over everyone they'd lost recently, John and Teyla declared their love for one another and brought on the advent of TJ! That's the way it happened in my shippy world!

I totally understand and I agree. And I agree with what Yappi said. I don't look at it has being a bad shipper. I'm a fan of the characters too. As you said if they had handled Teyla/Kanaan better, I think would have tried to accepted it even though I'm a JT shipper, but the way TPTB handled T/K was just done so badly in IMO that I don't find it believably either and to me it was a real disservice to the character of Teyla.

No, not a bad shipper at all, but a conscious and realistic one.

I've always written here and everywhere that my interest in SGA did not come in the form of John nor John and Teyla. It came in the form of Teyla. I fell for this character and through her eyes, I fell in love with John like she did. I saw it in her and I lived it through her. That's how powerful the connection between them is. And I firmly believe it's still there even after the whole Kanaan thing.

That being said, I too was reluctantly but willing to give this father of her child a try. But that had to be something that was belieavable. Teyla deserved as much!!!! She deserved better. For her character and for everything that she stood for.

I am a HUGE JT Shipper. But I'd like to think that I'm not blind. When the news broke of her pregnancy, I knew. I knew they wouldn't make John the father....and I was willing to see Teyla "fall" for another guy if done with good taste. It didn't have to take as long as it did with John, but I wanted to see it onscreen.

And what I've seen, and what has been shown...when has Teyla declared to Kanaan that she even loves him? What kind of relationship are they truly in? What does it mean for her as an Athosian? That was such a missed opportunity to know more about Athosians and their relationships...and I could go on.

But my point, I totally agree with you and I was willing to give him a try. But the writers failed to show me Kanaan and worse, to show me that Teyla is with the man she loves. All it did is show me a vulnerable Teyla that is now content to live with the consequences. That's not love!

If I may add...she not only said, it just happened to Keller, but also to John. That to me spoke even more volumes!!! and I'm sorry, maybe my shippy eyes were playing with me too, but I remember that Joe and Rachel admitted that they really thought out and practiced the scene when Teyla finally tells John of her pregnancy, and I could be so dead wrong here, but Teyla...Teyla's eyes and mannerisms were one of a woman that was "sorry". Sorry for what? It was one where she showed some form of "regret" and that "it just happened" that to me didn't say, I love this man...she could have told John, you have nothing to demand of me, I love this man, Blah, blah, blah...and yet all she come up with was "it just happened".

Again, I was so angry with the writers. I can't see that scene. Because number 1. You see John's pain. You see everything going through his mind in a matter of seconds. Joe was PHENOMINAL!!! and Teyla....I felt sorry for Teyla. I saw the pain and anguish in her eyes for someone that she knew she hurt and for someone that she truly cares for.

For her, when this should have been a time to celebrate, it was one of pain and sorrow. And that pain wasn't because Kanaan was missing. That pain was totally coming for her relationship with John.

Now, I could be wrong...but thats' what I saw.

So, again...my poor Teyla as a character...how can I possibly believe that she's with the man she loves when the only thing that she continually binds her with Kanaan is her son.

I think it was all of the "It just happened"s that made me think that Teyla turned to Kanaan in grief over the losses of Elizabeth and Carson. She needed a friend and a shoulder to cry on - and John being as emotionally clueless as he is - was not able to be there for her. I think a moment of grief turned to passion and TJ was the result. Not grand passion. I think Teyla/Kanaan can work for a short term thing. But unless it's grand passion, what's the point? After 19 years of being with my husband, I'm still madly, passionately in love with him and vice versa. Ultimately, I don't know what I want for John and Teyla at this point. Can they find a new starting point? I don't know. I do want the characters happy though either together or with whatever other character tptb decide to put them with. (I'm very much a Noah's Ark type person. Two by two and all of that) I just didn't see them happy at the end of EatG. Not even a "Gee we're alive" happy.

Hope! Totally understand about real life and such. Take your time on the RR! We want quality, not necessarily timliness!

I still say I've seen a huge "daddy" vibe from John during S5. Particularly when talking to Fran!Weir, and to a lesser extent when Rodney wants to hold TJ so much in ...that episode. Can't think which one.

I totally agree... I think John would have been perfect as the daddy... it would have shown us another totally wonderful side to him... I would have loved to have seen another scene with him with Torren. I think it would have much more believable that John and Teyla were building up a relationship behind the scenes than Teyla seeing Kanaan without anyone knowing... I think the scene in Doppleganger would have been the perfect moment to show us when their relationship changed..

It would have been completely believable and it would have worked into the story and I think Season 5 would have been a hell of a lot better and I would have even tolerated the whole McKay/Jennifer but I know it would have taken a lot less precedent than what it actually did.

Sad...really sad. And even after the whole Kanaan baby thing, you are so right Blue. It would have made more sense. Kanaan was simply not the guy that made any sense whatsoever for Teyla.

That doesn't make you a bad shipper. I think if they did it right we would've had better closure, but they didn't and what little we got you could see here and there that there was still something. Teyla's faith in John proves it and his ability to disregard(sp) his safety to protect her and Torren is another.
