            OT - Major Star Trek Spoilers

            But there is an explanation for all the differences
            Spoiler:
            you see, a Romulan ship from the future comes back in time through a black hole and arrives when Kirk is born - their arrival changes the timeline, creating an alternate reality. The original Spock - who is a lot older now and played by Nimoy!! - also comes through from the future, and of course he remembers the original timeline and knows that this one is different. So yeah, in the original series they don't meet until later etc, but this is an alternate reality.

            It actually works really well as a concept - it still has a couple of flaws (these stories always do!) but on the whole it provides a really clever way for them to produce these films and not just tell the same stories as the original series.
