Then there are the New York/New Jersey accents vs. New England. And all that's just the East coast. Out west it's much the same.
I remember when SGA first aired, people were wondering where JF was from and trying to figure out his accent. A lot of fans heard a bit of Southern because he drawls. But those of us who are really Southern knew we were hearing a Western drawl with a bit of Surfer dude thrown in. And Torri has a slight Canadian lilt with those lovely round vowels.
And don't even get me started on the UK brand of English. It's just as complicated over there. I love Dr. Who, but I sometimes miss parts of dialogue through confusion.
There are several dialects in Russian, too, but they don't differ that much, even if the pronunciation seems strange or a word is unknown, it's still pretty easy to guess.
And in Chinese hieroglyphs make things easier... in a way. Even if speakers can't understand each other, they still can communicate through writing, that's a solution, as most differences are in pronunciation, not in grammar or vocabulary.
Just give you one example: a name of the airport in Hong Kong is read as Chi Lie Jiao in standard Chinese (putonghua), and as Chek Lap Kok in local Cantonese dialect. But the hieroglyphs are all the same

Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon. Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

FH that is exactly what happened. They actually wait until I open GW and then start fussing sometimes. *sigh* At least I can read with them on my lap. Love keeping my mind in fandom. Keeps me sane during the crying fits.

Cinese in Firefly was quite interesting, yes.
When I was watching it... I understood written hieroglyphs and part of spoken language, but not everything; first of all, in most cases it was just different types of curses, which I didn't know (as never was interested in them very much ), and then, the pronunciation also was a bit far from standard, which also made recognizing harder.
Accents and dialects, btw, can be a problem in Chinese; sometimes eveb a native speaker from the North region can't understand southerner speaking, let alone foreigner.
I actually just got back from having dinner with her and everything seems to be going good for her.
I remember watching a behind the scenes piece on Firefly and the actors and writers were talking about trying to learn the Chinese. They were also debating how bad it sounded to native speakers.I tell you Teal'c, hockey is the coolest game on Earth!
Did you not say it is played on ice, O'Neill?

To make matters even worse I went to college in the north of the state and hung out with all the Englishmen on the soccer team. I'd come back home and curse with a Manchester accent.I tell you Teal'c, hockey is the coolest game on Earth!
