Good afternoon, Sparkies! Happy Canon Monday!

Yay, Torri's gonna do the hero project with Martin Firrell!

SGARising is following all of our main cast members for S6 that are on Twitter, plus Rainbow, 'cause, well, Ford rocks. So if any of the others are out there...

Good morning, Sparkies. The thread is so deliciously busy even after the milestones! Loving all the fics, banners, and vids (which I finally got to see over the weekend--I have GOT to get a working wireless router for my house!!).

The SG people crack me up with their tweets. David H. is musing on the danger of Dragon*Con and Jewel had me rolling about the abuse she was going to do to her Visa card because of a Barney's Warehouse clearance sale she passed by.
OMG, Jewel's tweets are slaying me, she's such a riot!

                Does anyone have any questions?

                        (In John's room)

“Good. Wouldn't be the same without you.”

Elizabeth threw him a soft smile and picked up ‘War and Peace’ again. “I actually brought “Anna Karenina” with me. I’d offer you to read it after you finish this one but I don’t know how good your level of Russian is.”

A trace of curiosity and amusement was clearly visible on John’s face. “You brought a book with you in Russian while it’s already a pain to read Tolstoy in English?”

She laughed at that and nodded. “I always try to read books in their original language. You’d be surprised how much better they are.”

“Privet is all I know in Russian. Actually... I can say hello in about...” He thought for a moment. “20 languages... more or less.”

Elizabeth looked intrigued and leaned in a bit closer. “You surprise and impress me, major. What possessed you to learn how to say hello in 20 different languages?”

Throwing her a lopsided grin, he felt a surge of pride that he was able to impress her. “I love to travel, but you know how mathgeeks don’t do well in languages, so while I flunked most language classes in school, I promised myself that if I ever wanted to travel around the world, the least I could do was learn how to greet people in atleast 20 different languages. So I looked around in school, in our community, in church and I found my 20 languages. It took a while to memorize them all, but ever since then, I’ve known how to greet people in 20 different languages... more or less. Not that it comes in handy now that I live in the Pegasus Galaxy.”

She looked even more impressed and his grin grew. “How old were you?”

“16 and still full of dreams for the future.” His grin faded a bit and she wasn’t sure she should ask the next question.

                        “What happened?”

His face darkened at that and he glanced away from her.

“Sorry.” She quickly apologized. “I shouldn’t have asked... I...”

“No.” He interrupted her. “It’s ok... it’s... it’s just been a while since I talked about it.”

                        She nodded in understanding.

“When I was 17 my mom died unexpectedly due to a rare but very ferocious form of cancer. My dad changed after that and when I turned 18 we had a huge fall-out and I joined the military. The only times I went out of the US after that was to go on missions. Not really the kind of worldly travels I was imagining as a kid.”

She had read the basics in his file, but hearing him say it was still a completely different thing. “I’m sorry.”

He shrugged. “It’s been a long time and the job I’m doing now brings me to places I never dared to dream off, so I’m good.” A little grin was back on his face.

                        “I’m glad.”

“What about your family?” He asked.

She sighed. “I miss my mom and my dog immensely.”

“You have a dog?” He asked and she nodded. “I love dogs. We used to have a Golden Retriever when I was a kid. What’s he called?”

“’She’ is called Sedge, she's also a Golden Retriever and I hope Simon is taking good care of her.”

                        “Simon?” He asked intrigued.

“Uh... yeah... he’s... was my boyfriend. I’m not sure about our current status.”

“You can ask him when you get back to Earth.”

“I was actually planning on asking him to join the expedition. He’s a very good doctor and he’d do an excellent job in Carson’s team.”

John nodded, not willing to acknowledge the stabs of jealousy he felt towards the man he never met. Instead he opted to change to subject. “You mentioned your mom, I guess you get along good with her?”

“Oh yes. I know it sounds like a cliché, but she’s one of my best friends actually. And I really do miss her a lot.”

“I bet. And what about your dad?”

Now her face darkened and he knew he had asked the wrong question.

“I didn’t ask.” He said quickly.

“No. It’s alright... really...” She took a deep breath. “My dad was my hero. I followed in his footsteps by becoming a diplomat. He was and will always be one of the best diplomats the world has ever known. But five years ago he was kidnapped in Africa.” She swallowed painfully. “It was supposed to be his last mission. After that he would retire and my mom and he were really looking forward to it. But it wasn’t meant to be. The kidnappers never intended to return him alive and killed him instead. He was a white man intervening in black men’s business and they hated that. It was their way of telling the UN to back off.”

John sighed. “I never understood racism. How can you dislike or even hate someone because of the color of their skin?”

“I know.” Elizabeth nodded in agreement. “I never understood it myself.”

“I’m sorry you lost him like that, he sounds like a good man.”

“He was.” She agreed. “He was amazing . But it was hardest on my mom. She really was looking forward to his retirement and to have him all to herself after spending so much of their marriage apart.”

“I can only imagine.” John said.

“It was my biggest beef with Simon too. He was always at home in Washington working in the hospital while I was traveling around the globe playing the big-shot negotiator.”

“It was the reason my marriage failed and I could never hold on to a girlfriend.” John said, feeling comfortable enough to mention it to her.

“Sucks, doesn’t it?” She asked with a sad smile.

“Definitely.” He grinned slightly. “I always thought I was the only one with that problem. Others in my squad had been happily married for years.”

“Maybe you were just waiting for the right person to come along.”

He gazed into her eyes and was lost for a few moments. “Yeah... maybe...” He murmured.

Casting her eyes away from him, she tried to stop the blush from appearing on her face. She needed to change the subject... quickly.

Apparently he had been thinking the same thing as they both started speaking at the same time.

                        “I’ve been...” “Maybe you...”

“You first.” Elizabeth said with a careful smile.

“I’ve been thinking that maybe you could teach me Russian. That way I can read ‘Anna Karenina’.”

Her smile slightly grew. “Let’s make a deal. You finish ‘War and Peace’ first and then I’ll teach you Russian by reading ‘Anna Karenina’.”

“Deal.” He grinned and they shook hands.

“I’d better let you read some more then.” She said and got up from the chair.

                        “Good idea.”

“I’ll see you in the morning, major.”

“Goodnight, doc.” He watched her leave and was unable to wipe the grin off his face.

                        ---

                        (after the ep)

Breathing in the salty Lantean air, she realized what had been wrong with her vision from Earth. The air had been too clean, had smelled too salty, had smelled to much like the air from her new home. She could barely remember how the air on Earth had smelled, but she knew it was nothing like the clean fresh air here... not even on Antarctica had the air smelled as fresh like this.

She heard the door behind her open and knew by the bounce in his step who it was. Standing next to her, he took in a deep breath too.

“What convinced you that it was fake?” She asked.

“They allowed Teyla free range much too easily and too quickly. When I was briefed about the Stargate program, I read the files of the SG1 members and it took Teal’c and Jonas months before they were allowed off-base under guard... even longer before they were allowed off-base without an armed guard by their side, so there is no way they would allow Teyla off-base after a standard check-up and a 15-minute chat. But what really convinced me were my two army buddies from Afghanistan who had died there that were suddenly standing in front of the apartment I never owned, but only dreamed about, with beer in their hands.”

Elizabeth smiled. “I heard you mention that to the fake Hammond. No wonder you freaked out.”

“I aimed my gun at Ford... but it never really was Ford... it’s all confusing...”

                        “It really was.” She agreed.

                        “What convinced you?” He asked.

She shrugged. “Simon wasn’t acting like his usual self.”

                        “Ah.”

“He was working on a car.” She laughed bitterly. “The only time he did anything around the house was when a light bulb needed changing and even then I was usually the one to do that. He’s barely able to distinguish a screwdriver from a wrench.” She sighed. “I think I was just too relieved to know he was ok and had been waiting for me to return to think about the fact that he was actually working on a car.”

John gave her a careful smile. “No one that can blame you for being relieved and not noticing the little things.”

“It’s not something you can call little.” She pointed out.

                        “Yeah... but still...”

                        “I know.”

It stayed quiet between them as they gazed at the ocean surrounding the city.

John broke the silence first. “You know what I find most amazing? The fact that I couldn’t wait to get back here.”

“To be honest? I felt the same.”

They shared a smile and turned back to stare at the ocean.

Precious moments, as always ... keep up the good writing!!!

Although none of it is really secret if you see how many people are actually using it
All the transporters are linked together; you can use one to go to any other in the system.

Nah, it's not really a secret. More private and able to avoid stares from the control room staff, certainly.

And more Missing Moments! Hooray! *boos at the mention of Simon, the jerk*

Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon. Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

Thank you! And that is a beautiful bittersweet song.
