“I think this piece of toast is brown enough, Daddy,†Nicholas Sheppard said loudly as he peered intently into the toaster oven.
“Shhh! Use your quiet voice, Buddy. Remember that Mommy is sleeping...â€
“And we want to suprise her,†Nick interrupted.
“We want to surprise her,†John automatically corrected as he plopped a handful of red flowers whose name he had forgotten into a vase and filled it halfway with water.
Nick grinned at him and tugged open the small door to the toaster. “Surprise,†he said carefully. “Let's surprise her with lots and lots of 'tawberry jam on her toast.â€
John slid the perhaps-a-bit-too-brown toast onto a plate and ruffled his son's hair in passing. “Who's the one who likes lots of strawberry jam?â€
“Mommy.â€
At his father's raised eyebrow, the young boy dipped his head and amended his answer. “And me!â€
“And who is the breakfast for?â€
“Mommy.†Nick jumped down from the stool on which he was perched and joined his father who was looking into the refrigerator. “Do you think Mommy would like cake with her toast and jam?â€
John grabbed the butter from a shelf and tugged Nicholas out of the way by the back of his pajamas. “The cake is for later, but we have eggs.â€
Nick had hurried over to the stove and was trying to pull himself up to investigate where all the smoke was coming from. Quickly, John grabbed he handle of a pan that seemed to be the source of the problem, burning his hand in the process. Cursing, he managed to set the hot pan aside without spilling its contents or dropping it.
With both hands over his mouth, Nicholas stared wide-eyed at his dad. “You said a golf word, Daddy.â€
John stopped his task of salvaging what he could of the scrambled eggs. “Golf word?â€
“Mommy said that word was what you say when you play golf. Are we going to play golf today, Dad?â€
John sighed and added some cheese to the eggs. “Maybe later while Mommy enjoys some quiet time.â€
“But first we have to bring her breadfast in bed.†Nicholas looked proudly at the tray John had finished assembling.
“Breakfast in bed and I think we're about ready big guy.†John finished pouring the coffee and added several napkins to the tray.
With Nicholas leading the way they went into the bedroom where Elizabeth Sheppard was just beginning to stir. Seeing his mother was awake, Nick took a flying leap onto the bed and his mother gave him a smacking kiss on his head.
“Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!†the young boy yelled at the top of his lungs.
“What is that...wonderful smell?†Elizabeth raised both eyebrows at John who was holding the tray and looking at her hopefully. “How did you know I would wake up starving?â€
And even though we celebrate it in August, happy mothers day to all who celebrate it today

As much as I don't like Sheppard putting his hands on a woman that is not Elizabeth, I'm accepting it for the season to be better, but I have a little request: is it possible at least to get John say to Mayel, talking about his past, that there was once a woman/friend he cared so much about, but she got lost/dead? There's no need he says the name Elizabeth, just slightly hint at it.
On the Mayel questions--nephtys, that's exactly what I was imagining with Mayel. Elizabeth will factor heavily into John's actions around Mayel.
In answer to everyone--since we're only going to have time to develop this over half a season, Mayel will not be Kanaan because she won't have his significance or history. She's not someone we've seen before or are supposed to assume we've seen before. She has to be introduced to the audience, so her relationship with John will never be to the level of serious/marriage-intention commitment, because we can't possibly introduce her and get to know her well enough to have them reach that level.
But she is the first girl who is a 'repeater', meaning he wants to see her again in a serious way that has more to do with who she is rather than passion or physical attraction. As we see her or hear her mentioned, I think we find he likes her because he can talk to her, feels good being around her, that sort of thing. This ability lightens his character; makes him smile more. I've mentioned she's a little like Elizabeth-lite, and if you want to compare what I'm thinking here, consider the John/Elizabeth chemistry/bond in a less epic sense. That kind of mental connection, but with John considering romance. With her, he wants to take that chance.
But, he has lost people close to him, so as we see that the relationship is more than a kirkette, I think we see or sense hesitancy on John's part--we leave the cause sorta ambiguous, but we imply that he's afraid of getting too close. I think we need to write the start of their relationship before we get too much into how deep it goes by the end, but I think the hesitancy keeps the relationship from progressing too quickly, which works out for all of us because when she betrays him he's not so deeply invested it shatters him. It just makes him really, really angry.
Part of what Mayel does for John, though, is prep him for the ability to perhaps reconsider his relationship with Elizabeth in a new light (he won't realize it for a while, but we can get there slowly). In a sense, Mayel was very much like her--except Elizabeth is her superior in terms of character.Last edited by Eri13; 09 May 2010, 04:53 PM.Visit SGArising.com to read our virtual continuation of the Atlantis series!

Got a timeline note regarding Season 6 and SGU: According to today's entry in Joe Mallozzi's blog, SGU does indeed begin very shortly after the end of Atlantis...
imadaman writes: “No hints about when the premiere took place? Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years after EatG?â€
Answer: It would have to have taken place not too long after the events of EatG (days, maybe weeks perhaps) since the events of the Atlantis movie, Stargate: Extinction, follow very son after EatG as well (and helps explain why Dr. McKay wasn’t drafted to body switch during the show’s first season).Spoiler:first because they're off ferrying people to and from the Icarus Base just before and during the events of SGU's Air, and then because the Hammond will be back at Earth undergoing repairs after getting the stuffing kicked out of it by the Lucian Alliance during the attack on the Icarus Base.
Just as an aside note,Spoiler:I found Mallozzi's comment about the timing of Extinction being a reason why McKay wasn't available to body switch during SGU Season 1 rather interesting... could the Extinction movie be cutting Atlantis off from Earth (albeit temporarily) again? Curious...(This is legal notice that any attempt to censor or delete, for the purpose of oppressing fair and open discussion, any statement made by me will be considered a violation of my right to free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and will be dealt with in accordance with federal law.)

He still has to learn a lot though about being an MC... especially compared to his predecessor
I mean, even if he had to announce one name, he had to look at a paper and TWICE!! he said that Joe and David were from Stargate SG1. He also said that Tahmoh played Halo instead of Helo. And he made a reference to Jamie Amber, instead of Bamber.
Also at the end of the day, Mr. Wasser was already at the bar and couldn't be bothered to close of the day's events. Not something you can pull off as an MC if you ask me.
I really wonder what Fedcon will do next year with the MC.

What this means in terms of plotting our episodes is that we'll have to keep in mind that most of Season 1 of SGU will be overlapping with Season 6. I'm guessing Air would probably fall shortly after Episode 3 (our Resolution of Todd episode), perhaps overlapping either Episode 4 (First Year) or Episode 5 (To Build a Fire). This also means that Carter and her ship, the General Hammond, won't be available for the first few episodes of Season 6,Spoiler:first because they're off ferrying people to and from the Icarus Base just before and during the events of SGU's Air, and then because the Hammond will be back at Earth undergoing repairs after getting the stuffing kicked out of it by the Lucian Alliance during the attack on the Icarus Base.

Spoiler:given that they set up the wormhole drive initially for SGU, but didn't use it, and JM said it will feature in Extinction, that Atlantis will be back in PG pretty quickly. I don't see why they'd use it though, sounded pretty dangerous and the hyperdrive supposedly works, albeit a bit temperamentally.sigpic

I agree with making John hesitant about moving the relationship forward; on the one hand, he's been alone for so long that his heart is yearning for a real connection to someone who can understand him and complete him, but on the other hand, he's been burned before, both by the failure of his marriage to Nancy and losing Elizabeth before he ever had the chance to find out if he could have had something more with her. Which makes his reaction to Elizabeth's return all the more significant as he's unexpectedly been given a second chance. Again.

Originally posted by Southern Red View PostI just recently rewatched Outcast and was struck anew by how nervous John was around Nancy. Joe did a great job there as he always does and in such a subtle way that you almost have to watch again to catch all his little nuances. I thought he looked at her very wistfully when she first appeared with a ton of regret in his face. And forgetting Grant's name was priceless. It's also interesting that they never show her left hand so that you can tell if she's wearing a ring. Hmmm. Then later when he's waiting for her in the car he's fussing with his clothing like he's trying to neaten himself up. And she seems so concerned about him. I just saw a ton of potential for letting us see how John views the failure of that marriage. He takes all the blame but gets testy when they're on the bench and some of the old problems come up. He knows he screwed up but still his job won't let him be more forthcoming. He needs a woman that he can talk to and won't have to keep secrets from. But he also needs someone who will stand up to him and won't let him always be in charge.
As long as I don't have to actually watch any of SGU, I'm fine with honoring the timeline. Though I admit when Robert Knepper's episodes start, I may sneak a peek. He was such a good bad guy in Prison Break. I'm hoping he's very very bad in SGU.Visit SGArising.com to read our virtual continuation of the Atlantis series!
