Some things are universal. A lady almost killed me yesterday.

    Spoiler:
We have this thing here called "turn right on red". I'm not sure you have it over there, but it means After coming to a full stop and looking both ways, if nothing is coming you can go right. But what a lot of people do is barely slow down. I've had people actually blow their horns at me for stopping. Anyway, this car whose driver was so tiny I thought the car was driving itself darted out in front of me and across 2 lanes of traffic. My brakes work fine.

I hope we're all recovered from the beer barbeque. And I hope Joe will be allowed to join us in the future.

Don't even get me STARTED on how people drive nowadays. Like, school zones, anyone? NOBODY slows down anymore. I get people blaring my horn at me for going to LEGALLY MANDATED SPEED. [email protected]!#$)*&$*#@!&%*@!&#%*#@

Anyways...yesterday I sort of reached a breaking point as far as guilt-inducing surfing and my job. I'm trying to be better about not spending too much time on the 'net, because while I typically do it as programs are loading, etc, I end up staying longer than I need to. So I may not show my face for the next few hours but I'll stop back in around lunch.

I think we've discussed quite a lot about PM and Quietus--unless Drew has any questions she'd like discussed, why don't we move on to "Found in Translation?" Details are on the comm--please check them out and read them if you want to add new ideas. Link can be found below my sig, SR's sig and on various other sigs around here.

I'll be back around 1 PM ET to check in.

Okay, to get us started we said this was to be a humor episode and I think we need that after all the heavy drama. Elizabeth is unsure of just where she fits in anymore. I can see her starting to act like the boss again and then stopping herself when she realizes she's not. We haven't talked much about Woolsey. I would imagine he'd have a big part in this one. Considering how kind and supportive he was to Ronon and Teyla in EatG, I can see him as being the same with her. He invites her into his quarters for wine and they talk. She feels more normal having a discussion about the city/what's happening/politics anything to normalize her. We may even want John to have a little eyebrow raise about her spending time with Dick. We also need to see the rest of the team and how they reach out to her. It could be amusing with Ronon's awkward attempts and Rodney making it all about himself. This is also a good time to insert some Teyla/Liz friendship and girl bonding. I think John would be the most difficult to adjust and may have to be nudged (probably by Teyla) in that direction. Elizabeth soaks up all the attempts to help from all the others but really needs more from John. The level of shippiness here has to be very subtle I think. We have to reestablish their friendship first.

Just my quick thoughts. Feel free to ignore, tear them apart or disagree.

Whoever is keeping track of episode title votes. I really like What Dreams May Come. "For in that sleep of death what dreams may come/When we have shuffled off this mortal coil" -- Hamlet says you have to worry what happens after death and that's something to worry about (my very loose interpretation). It signals uncertainty, maybe in connection to Elizabeth and the uncertainty of her future given the mistrust that her nanites are gone. In a sense, I guess, she has "died" and her return to Atlantis may be a "rebirth" of sorts. To twist the meaning a bit. So, works for me.

(Quietus is cool too, but I've always been a fan of multiple-worded episode titles)

The bolded jumped out at me. Since we're resurecting Elizabeth it would be appropriate to refer back to "This Mortal Coil", one of the episodes where a version of her died.

I always thought Richard Woolsey feels admiration and respect for Elizabeth (see Misbegotten) and -being the leader of Atlantis in S5- he understands better what it means to be in place of Elizabeth, therefore I can see them becoming friends (I will write them that way in my fic, when my writer's block goes away). I can even see the eyebrow raising and a big question mark over Sheppard's head about Elizabeth/Richard
I would like to see more of Elizabeth/Teyla (we didn't have that much during S1-S3 and it was a pity).
As to Rodney, I remember his reaction in TMC and GITM. He was the first to warm up to Elizabeth. He so wanted her to be back, I feel he would be eager to have a good relationship once again with her.
Therefore I agree 100% with your idea.

yield signs around here! Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't yield mean "slow down and if something is coming stop and wait your turn?" because around here I'd swear it means "slow down and if something's coming gun it so you can get out before they catch up to you"

                  Spoiler:
Around work there are photo enforced redlights. I have the opposite problem of people NOT turning right on red when it's perfectly legal. Yield signs do mean "Slow down and wait your turn if necessary." I always thought it would be funny to replace stop signs with yield signs for a day.

And the humor episode, hmm. It would be funny to see Lizzie and Tricky Dick knocking back some Scotch and cigars good ole boys club style. Just kidding. I think seeing Liz and Teyla hang out would be cool. But I have no clue what the girl equivalent of beer and sports is.

Well, I gave you some news about my aunt. I just learnt that she has another problem. She has a heart clogged vein and another one is not working correctly. She will have another heart surgery but more important (open heart surgery). It's start to be a little too serious for my family and me. But well, I'm a optimist girl and the doc is an excellent one. He said that it's a surgery very easy to do and in her misfortune she's lucky because she knew she has a problem with her heart (without it the story will be different). But when you talk about a heart surgery is always impressive. My aunt was a little depressed this morning but now she starts to laugh about it. It will be a long road but she will be fine. And my mom is also a little depressed but I'm working on her.lol

I've made notes of all the suggestions so far for FIT and am going to update the comm. If you want a look at how I envisioned the first Woolsey/Weir interaction following "Quietus", here's my first 'scene' of the story. This was based upon the first discussions we had of FIT:

                          Spoiler:

                          Found in Translation

The sun beamed brightly across the wide piers of the city of Atlantis, lighting the city with a warmth and comfort.

Within the massive gateroom at the top of the Central Tower, Elizabeth Weir observed the stained glass window that stood at the meeting point of the upper staircases, the glass reworked from how she remembered, but lovely nonetheless.

She hadn’t really looked at it with any particular interest since her return, but just a few weeks after the successful operation performed by Carson, Keller, Rodney and Jeannie Miller, the reality of everything that had happened—the explosion at the window, her capture on Asuras, her recovery and the destruction of Asuras II—not to mention the tales of the City’s recent lockdown—was beginning to weigh on her. After her rescue, the only worry she’d had was whether she posed a threat to the Expedition.

Now, she had the time to mull over everything that had happened and what she had missed, and doubts were starting to grow. No matter how many times they reassured her she was no longer a danger and that she would learn to fit back into Atlantis life, she felt like she was standing on the landing again, waiting for the world to shatter into a thousand pieces. Only when it happened again, it would not be put back together as quickly as the window had been.

“Have you had a chance to go over the IOA’s job description?” broke in Richard Woolsey, startling her. He was observing from across the glass desk in what used to be her office, and it felt a little disorienting, seated in here with her back to the control room and not the wall.

“Yes,” she responded with a smile. “Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what to say. All of these options—I’m grateful that both the SGC and IOA have permitted me to remain on Atlantis. But I don’t quite…I…”

“Don’t feel like you fit in?”

She grinned back at him. “Is it that obvious?”

“Let’s just say that you don’t seem quite as confident as you have in the past. But I think that Colonel Sheppard, Doctor McKay and many others would differ with your feelings on that.”

“And I’m grateful for their support. But they’ve lived through two years that I don’t remember missing. What they’ve gone through? Richard, I can’t even begin to fathom that.”

“Elizabeth, trust me when I say it doesn’t matter. Not to them.” Richard leaned a little forward. “The last few weeks have been a difficult adjustment for everyone. But believe me when I tell you that the difference between these couple of weeks and how it was before you were found is staggering. I can assure you that everyone on this base, for everything they’ve gone through, are much happier now then they’ve been for a long time.”

She smiled a bit uncomfortably, not quite sure how to respond to such a heartfelt assertion. “Well, I’ll do my best to live up to their expectations.”

“I think you’re doing well just to be living.”

                          “That’s...nice.”

He smiled, and sat back. “So what have you decided to do in your new ‘status’?

“Well, I’m not sure. This is going to take some getting used to, anyways,” she glanced down at the shirt she was wearing. Though the SGC had offered her the option of wearing the red jersey as a sign of her role on Atlantis, she’d declined it, and asked them to designate her a new color. For some reason, it felt wrong. Red signified administrative capacity, but in the past she’d really been the only administrator on Atlantis. It felt more representative of leadership status than anything else, and she didn’t want to be perceived as though she was stepping on Woolsey’s toes—or angling for her old job.

She hadn’t fit the descriptors for military black, medical grays and yellows, or science blue. Thought most of the researchers who studied history and language shared the blue with their science expedition counterparts, it hadn’t quite encompassed all the duties she was expected to perform in this new ‘position’ the IOA had developed to accommodate her—as Shen had put it—‘particular set of skills.’

“Well, I’m sure you’ll be able to handle it,” he said with a smile, “In any case, you couldn’t have asked for a better fit for a…”

The warning klaxons burst through the facility, echoing off Atlantis’s high walls. Richard slid back from the desk, Elizabeth pausing to follow as he made his way into the control room. The wormhole whooshed to life, settling as the glittering Atlantis shield formed to contain it.

Chuck, whom Elizabeth had been glad to find was still manning the dialer, looked up unconcernedly. “It’s Colonel Sheppard’s team. They’re back early.”

“Lower the shield.” Richard made a face, and jogged towards the stairs. Elizabeth followed in curiosity as the first of the four-team group split the shimmering face of the Stargate.

“What happened? You weren’t supposed to report in for another two hours.”

“Well,” John’s smile grew as he caught sight of Elizabeth standing behind Woolsey. “We ran into a little problem.”

Richard’s frowned. “And what is that?”

“It appears the inhabitants of P23-749 do not speak any understandable language,” Teyla said, coming alongside John.

                          “No English?”

“Or Ancient, Athosian, Genii, Wraith, Morse Code, French, Farsi, broken Spanish, Satedan grunt or even Canadian,” John smirked, ignoring McKay’s sigh of irritation. “And this was of absolutely no use.” He waved the handheld version of the Ancient language dictionary in front of them. “Apparently they don’t speak any dialect the Ancients documented in Pegasus.”

                          “Well, that presents a problem.”

“Just a small one,” John said pleasantly. “So I thought we’d head back and request the services of our newest Expedition member. Well, technically, our oldest Expedition member, but in a newly designated position. Sorta.”

Elizabeth glanced at him in surprise. “You want me to go?”

He shrugged. “You are the official diplomatic representative off-world for Atlantis. With a special background in language translation and cultural studies. I'd say it was a perfect fit.”

She looked from him to Rodney, Ronon, Teyla, and finally to Richard, who shrugged. “It is a perfect test run.”

Her gaze drifted back to John, a smile creeping across her face. “Okay, then.”

He returned her smile with one of his own. “Well, then, Doctor Weir, suit up. It’s time Atlantis put you back to work.”

It's serious, yes. But a very common surgery in these last years, so I'm confident everything will be ok and your aunt will be ok in no time.
                              *Hugs*

As to the episode "Found in translation" I'm thinking about the humour part. IIRC, the mission is on a planet where no english or known language is spoken. I think the right key for humour is "misunderstandings"
Elizabeth and Teyla could try to learn their language and try to negotiate/trade/whatever and the natives understand something else and they sorta "kidnap" the women to make a full beauty treatment, dressing them with native costumes and try to mate/marry them with local leaders
That's just an example, but if we all think about it, there's a lot we can invent

I remember my mother many years ago went to Venezuela and she didn't speak Spanish very well yet.
So she wanted to buy nails (= clavos in Spanish) but she asked for flowers (= clavel in Spanish) and it was funny.
Clavos / clavel sound almost the same, but meanings are different.
Another time she was told by a man that she had a nice "pelo" (= hair) but she thought he was talking about something else (pube) and she was really offended.

P.S.: BTW, we are near post 95000, we should post something really Sparky to celebrate it!!!

                                Margaritas and gossip.

I just survived a morning at the mall where I lost my car. My feet are killing me.

Eri, I love the tone of the Elizabeth story. Perfect.
