Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
Probably because they did relationships better? LOL!
Babylon 5 is on the top 10 of my favourite scifi series!
And I do agree, they did relationships and character development much better than any other series!
If only Elizabeth and John were given a chance in Atlantis ... so much potential wasted ... sigh ...

Yep, big B5 fan here. And it would be awesome if we got some Russia/Ukraine fans. Let's see how Sparky goes over in those countries.
I rewatched Seige 3 today because I was badly in need of some vintage SGA and was struck all over again with the sheer volume of Sparky. It was just amazing. Especially considering that Gero was the writer.

I don't think I've ever seen Babylon 5... or then again I might have, but I just don't remember.
And yup, that's why I watched the two eps I did today. I've still got a whole disc of S5 that I haven't watched yet ((with the exception of Vegas) and I bought the season when it came out last year), but I just wasn't feeling it. So Season 2 was a much better choice.
I was watching the behind the scenes of Brain Storm yesterday and most of it was an interview with Gero. It's kinda hard to believe that that guy was the one who wrote The Hug.

*sigh* Excuse the rambling.
Season 5 was not all bad IMHO but I know most people don't agree with me. It just depends on your perspective. For example, Daedalus Variations was quite good for the team interaction and the McShep banter; and of course GitM. I can't think of a single episode though otherwise that I can say is all good except Vegas of course, but each has good parts. Nothing can beat the beer on the pier scene in The Shrine; shirtless Shep is worth watching The Lost Tribe; Shep and Ronon in the rubble in S&R or Rodney delivering Teyla's baby; and the Shep parts in Remnants. Pretty sad though to think that's all I can come up with for a whole season whereas S1 is all good as is most of S2-3.

SyFy's 5pm Atlantis reruns are going to reset to Season 1 starting next Tuesday... mmm, classic SGA in the afternoon. Just give me a glass of wine and a cheese plate and I'm set!

That pretty much says it all. Season 5 (as well as Season 4) had a number of good individual moments that I enjoyed, but far fewer episodes had the total "package" that made them as good as those of Seasons 1-3. Funny how getting rid of two characters did all that damage.

Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon.Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

*thumbs up to that* Now that my project is done, I have time this weekend to CHILLAX. So I think I shall finally watch Epiphany.

I think some of it may boil down to who your favorite character is, too. Elizabeth was mine; John's second. So a season without Elizabeth is hard to watch, especially with the bitter feeling of why/how she left. I had to get over that before I could stomach the thought of an entire season without her. Even though I really like John and the others, I still felt really sad about the whole thing.
It's a little better now, and I'm starting to want to see John in particular in Season 5, along with Woolsey, Teyla and Kanaan and some of the stories people really enjoyed.

Vegas. You really, really want to watch Vegas.

Oh no, I don't think it was all bad either. The moments you mentioned were good, and maybe a couple of others that I can't really think of off of the top of my head. (I watched Remnants yesterday too, and since it was the second time I'd seen it, I was really fascinated by the parts with John, especially when it's all revealed what was actually going on. Of course, since my shipper glasses stay pretty permanently fixed on my face, I contributed a whole lot of that to Elizabeth, but anyway... I'm rambling again.)
It's taken me forever to watch those DVDs though, when normally I would have sped through those discs as fast as I possibly could. I suppose it's because unlike with S4 I've already seen all the episodes, but still... except for Ghost in the Machine and Vegas, S5 just doesn't have the same re-watch value for me as 1-3.

I'm the same way when it comes to rewatchability... whenever the S1-3 episodes come up on SyFy, I always try to tune in, but I haven't watched the S4 reruns, or the S5 reruns on broadcast TV, at all. I'll be keeping an eye out for when Remnants and Vegas come up in the rotation, but I'm probably going to continue to blow off the rest. One viewing was enough for me.

My thoughts:
-The voice of David Hewlett is heartbreaking
-The face of Joe Flanigan is heartbreaking.
-It's nice to see Torri.
-This scene is wonderful for our ship (some McWeir can be happy too)
-My last thought: WRITERS ARE STUPID!!!!!!! Why they don't keep her?

I watched S5 in italian recently (Italy is late, this season has not been aired on TV yet, only DVDs!) and now I've started rewatching it in english.
Not bad at all, very good stories, but my problem is the boss: Woolsey doesn't have the *leading* touch.
I'm not a fan of Ghost In The Machine at all. You don't leave 8 replicators floating in space, while you know (Niam has already proved it) that they can be recovered and revived, becoming a potential threat.
And the repli-Elizabeth was totally stranger to me, I cannot see anything of the old Elizabeth there.
What I hate the most in S5 is the fact that, except for GITM, Elizabeth is never mentioned or remembered by the crew. That's not fair
Shipping apart, Elizabeth Weir was a good leader and LOVED Atlantis, ready to fight for the city and for her people ... Carter and Woolsey were just ... well ... I can't find the word

The look on John's face and the way he says "Elizabeth" were priceless!!! I would have liked that Elizabeth asked for a meeting without saying immediately she was a clone ... I'm sure this time The Hug would have been initiated by Sheppard!!!

AH SEASON 4! Love that season! Donna!

Epiphany has a few great Sparky moments, especially at the end. And I love the way she insists on going along to rescue him. Also, in hindsight, you will notice that he never again doubts she will send rescue. In fact, in I believe it's The Ark he mentions to Ronon that he knows she will send someone for them. Also in CG he tells Todd that he has a life to go back to.
John has always been my favorite but of course losing Elizabeth was a huge blow. I hated the way he was treated in S5 and it's hard to watch his part being diminished the way it was. But he has some great scenes with Woolsey, Ronon and Rodney. I even thought John had good chemistry with Keller of a non-romantic sort and of course Carson. Aside from that the Woolsey parts are sometimes fun and the Teyla/Kanaan parts of Broken Ties are lovely. I wish they had done more with that little family but I guess the writers thought they had said all they needed to say.

It is difficult to remember some of the eps of S5 at all which in my mind distinguishes it from the other seasons. S4 was frustrating and annoying at times but at least memorable. I get Infection, Identity, Tracker, and Outsiders all mixed up and barely remember the plots of some others. FC/TLT were enjoyable at the time but the lack of John made me not want to rewatch them.
And I've given up watching any of them live. I just can't take the commercials. If I want to watch one I just pop in a DVD.

Good question. I was watching John's face for his reaction and Joe Flanigan did not disappoint me. He looked like you had thrown a bucket of cold water in his face and the way he had trouble talking brought a lump to my throat. Just wonderful acting and spoke volumes without many words. Then when I rewatched it I noticed that Rodney looked a little stunned also and he broke my heart too. They really cared about her.
