    Spoiler:
John Sheppard paused for a moment as the balcony doors swished open and wiped his suddenly sweaty palms down the sides of his pants. His Atlantis apology tour was about to come to an end thankfully. One more, hell the most important, mea culpa to go and he was done. None of the others had made him quite as nervous as this one though. He had started with the easy ones figuring that he needed to touch base at least with pretty much everyone in the city in one way or another from the Marines under his command right through the medical staff and culminating with a personal moment with each member of his team. Teyla had been the hardest. The tiny little remaining speck of discomfort in his presence that still lingered told him that a simple apology wasn't going to be enough to wipe the memory of how he had suddenly turned into something she didn't recognize and attacked her in a way that she neither welcomed nor understood. He figured he'd have to let her kick his ass a couple of times when sparring to regain their old sense of camaraderie.

After all that was done and he had killed way too much time pretending that he needed to review schedules and read a few mission reports, he had gone in search of Elizabeth. Of course he knew where to find her. At this time of the evening, just as the moon rose and the breeze off the ocean started to carry the tang of sea life and a hint of a nip toward the walls of the city, she liked to stand in her favorite spot on the balcony outside the control room and just breathe. That's where she was now, and he knew that she knew he was there by the sudden straightening of her shoulders.

Not able to delay any longer, John sauntered across the balcony and stopped next to her without speaking. Elizabeth turned only her head toward him in welcome and smiled at his casual attire.

“Still off duty, I see,” she remarked.

“ 'Fraid so.” John licked his lips and joined her in gazing out to sea. Finally when the silence stretched between them, he sighed and took a deep breath.

“I've been going around apologizing to everyone for all the trouble I caused,” he blurted. “I guess now it's your turn.”

“John.” She waved her hand to stop him.

“No, Elizabeth, I have to finish this.” Another deep breath and he was ready to continue.

“I hurt you. For that I can never forgive myself but I just want you to know that it was the last thing I wanted to have happen.”

A light touch to her throat was the only indication that she remembered what he had done to her and then she was vigorously shaking her head. “No John. You stopped that creature you were becoming from hurting me. Don't you see that?”

John leaned both hands on the railing, unable to meet her eyes. “No, actually I don't see that. I could have...”

“But you didn't,” she interrupted. “You didn't and that's the last I want to hear of it.”

Elizabeth tentatively put a gentle hand on his arm unsure of how he would react. The touch seemed to relax him a bit and he turned fully toward her. “You know you are the last person that I would ever cause harm. You know that, right.”

She nodded and kept her hand on the soft fabric of his shirt. The muscle beneath seemed to be relaxing more every second along with the tense look on his face.

John wasn't sure where the courage to say the next words came from but he figured the apology had gone so well he didn't have much to lose. “I...uh...also want to thank you for trusting me and staying with me when you must have known how dangerous I was.”

Elizabeth dropped her hand and caught his eyes with hers. “Leaving you to face that alone was not an option. I don't know what I would have done if...”

Now it was his turn to interrupt. “But it didn't. I'm 100% John Sheppard again such as he is.”

Elizabeth laughed a little at his self deprecation. “And I'd like to keep him that way please.”

“Oh and thanks also for pretty much ignoring everything I said during that whole time because I, you know, wasn't exactly lucid most of the time...”

    “John.”

    “Yeah.”

    “You're babbling.”

He stopped as if to consider the possibility before continuing. “Well that's a first. So we're good?”

    “I'd say we're good.”

John shot her his patented grin and leaned his shoulder against hers as they both turned to gaze out at the moon rising over the water. “You know your bedside manner actually improved a bit there toward the end.”

    “Really? You think so?”

John glanced sideways at her and back out at the ocean. “Definitely. Next time should be a lot better.”

“Next time? There had better not be a next time.” Elizabeth wound down when she glanced up at him and saw the teasing glint in his eyes. Yep he was definitely 100% John Sheppard again.
    *jumps up and down, clapping*

Yay! SR This is a great end scene! Good combo of serious and lightly flirty. Thanks for sharing...

And, I'm similar to Killdeer - I often don't have the time during the day to contribute to the incredible episode discussions, but I love reading them while I'm trying to down my lunch and before I go back to work. Lately, all I've been good for is the occasional fly-by picspam package.

Hmmm....maybe I'll have to go quickly scan my sparky photo collection and drop off a gift....

Oh hell no! You go wash your brain out with soap for thinking such heresy right this moment!

Of course, I'd also be willing to consider that Conversion tag you posted as an acceptable penance. That was lovely!

He was a wonderful moral quandary, so I really hated that they sort of shoved him into a box in Misbegotten. Though I adore the Sparky moments in Misbegotten, that particular episode really rubs me the wrong way at times in terms of story--not only are they sort of all over the place (it takes a half-hour for the group 'welcome back scene'??!!) but I also didn't like what they did with the Michael story there. Though it makes sense in one regards, it was kinda crazy that they genetically altered them (again) and then decided at the end to blow them all up. I don't consider myself a fool, but digesting that whole story in 42 minutes or so was difficult to wrap my head around, plus we were dealing with Woolsey, too.

Todd, I feel, was sorta what Michael could have become. But what would have been more interesting (and a bit redemptive for our Atlantis folks) would have been to have Michael being the one who caused the split in the Wraith way of thinking. Rather than being ostracized, maybe he finds ways to influence some of those Todd-like Wraith. The start of the evolution of the Wraith, because it would have to be their minds, and not just their genetics, that would have to be changed. And yet there were always those Wraith tendencies that reared their ugly heads. And he didn't have to be 'good' per se, there could have been all kinds of cutthroat tendencies within him--like maybe feeling Teyla's baby's genetics were useful and he crosses the line in trying to get his hands on her. The entire story could have been juicy, rather than Michael going off the deep end into Mad Scientist mode.

But, you get what you get. I did like the fact that they had writers (in Michael's case, of course, Carl Binder) who played with the gray areas. Stuff like Michael and Critical Mass really redeemed Atlantis as a series for me, because they tested the strength of characters and caused them to make decisions that weren't necessarily popular, but they were necessary.
Aaaaahhhh! *flails* That would've been such an awesome idea for continuing the Michael storyline. Damn, Michael and Todd working together to instigate rebellion in the ranks? I love that!

I certainly can see the shippiness between Michael and Teyla and I wish it hadn't devolved into that mad scientist obsession thing. It was just too predictable to hold my interest for very long.

That's why I think SG-1 just never really got my attention like Atlantis. They had fun characters, but I was really really impressed with who Elizabeth was. She is still, for me, one of the most impressive female characters to ever come out of science fiction because she fits no clear archetypes and was this really interesting mixture of soft and steel. I don't know if they really realized they were developing such a character, but I sorta forgive Atlantis it's quirks because in the mix of all the cliches and goofy sci-fi stereotypes and wallpapering of things, she evolved out of it, too.

To this day, and probably forever, I'll consider her to be one of my all-time favorite characters in any show. I'm kinda a show snob and really value programming for strength of story, character development and sensible writing, and if a show is weak on that combination, I generally don't like it or give it up. SGA certainly wasn't the strongest in any of those in comparison to some other shows, but I appreciated Elizabeth so much, and the other characters through her, that it is a show I'll rewatch again and again.
Elizabeth definitely grabbed my attention from the beginning. A female leader who doesn't fall into the clichés of being a warrior or a tech geek? Who has the guts to make unpalatable choices and take responsibility for them? Sign me up! I stuck with Seasons 4 and 5 because I wanted to see what her legacy might be, and while it didn't turn out the way I hoped, at least there is a legacy (Thank you, Joe Flanigan!) that will keep me tuning into reruns, reaching for my S1-3 DVDs, and writing fanfic.

Was he really in love with Teyla, or was that some sort of sick infatuation? The real ship between them - Michael torn between his human and Wraith side, and genuine feelings for Teyla - would have been great for the show - had they done that, they would ahve had the darker SGA they wanted. And all those light bulbs could have stayed, and dude, Elizabeth would rock in this scenario.

But before this...question. You know that I love asking stupid questions. This one is like the others.lol
If you have the chance to add one scene in SGA between Elizabeth and John, what is it? (A kiss? A hug? A revelation scene? A sad scene?...).I want all the details.lol You can take a scene that happens between two characters from another show and adapt to Elizabeth and John.
If you don't understand the question, sorry.lol
I don't think this is a stupid question and that's pretty darn easy. Though I'd love more alone moments between them at all times I'd have to say that the single biggest irritation for me was the lack of a John/Elizabeth scene at the end of Common Ground. Given how magnificent Elizabeth's role was in CG, and much angst there was over John's torture--plus, it was Kolya!--I really, reallyreallyreallyreally wanted a final balcony scene.

While I suspect it was a time issue (even Todd's sendoff seems rushed a little) I don't know if the writers felt it would run the risk of being shippy to have a balcony moment. I don't think you have him come into Atlantis a la The Hive (that might be too hokey. What do you do--have the entire of Atlantis cheer? That's not John.) But at the same time, if he or she is out on the balcony and the other one comes out--what do they say to each other? The closest you could get is The Real World, but in that one John was all peppy!happy and I don't see Elizabeth trying to lighten the mood like that. I think it ends up being shippy, and coming right after TRW, I wonder if they just didn't want to go there.

Stinkers! But anyways, that's my moment I want back.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any. Sparky has always kind of been in a class by itself to me. I don't know of any other show I've ever watched where the most popular het pairing (by far) was one totally unintended by the show's PTB. It's always created this huge mental disconnect for me where the show was concerned, knowing that what I thought I was seeing for the first two and half seasons was not at all what the writers were intending. Hmm. I'll have to think about that for a bit.
Hmmm...TV couples? I agree with KD mostly, I find them rather unique because they had phenomenal chemistry despite being written as a platonic pairing. They really sold that best friend vibe, though if they'd been allowed to demonstrate UST I think they would have absolutely smoldered. *I get chills thinking about it, actually*

But if I had to compare them...hmmm. Honestly, the best comparison I can come up with is one of my all time faves, Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. That relationship was, for five years, written to be a platonic partnership because CC didn't want the show to devolve into romantic fluff, but the chemistry between Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny were what drove the show. It was a smart show, and fun to watch, and despite being sci-fi it took itself seriously, at least for five years. Mulder was a bit like John with the more lighthearted sense of humor, whereas Scully was pretty much all business, much like Elizabeth. They snapped and sparkled and zinged at all the right times but it wasn't fluffy or sappy or too overly romantic. They were partners and friends, and I loved that.

Okay, guys, I might continue this, but to do so, I need to watch few S4 and S5 eps. I might change how things went, but right now this is all I came up with. FS, through Keller's POV.

                      Spoiler:
She keeps in mind what Carson always used to say – not making a decision can do more harm than making a bad decision. Everything around her is exploding, people are shouting for help, and she is the one who has to decide. A person with a cut will be louder in asking for attention than someone gravely injured. There is more strength, more voice left.

Elizabeth Weir doesn’t call for help and Jennifer makes a decision, and then another.

They carry the leader of the City on stretcher and Jennifer is walking next to her, briskly, like someone who knows which decision is the right one.

                      *

No one tells her which is the right way to treat the next of kin. No one knows that, you either have it in you, or you don't. She holds Colonel's shoulder before she tells him that Elizabeth is alive, only she isn't. All that used to be her, all that made her Elizabeth could easily be gone, and Jennifer knows, and keeps her voice quiet.

He is a grown man, and he nearly cries. There is nothing more to tell.

                      *

Elizabeth wakes up, although she shouldn't; and John pulls a gun, although it breaks his heart. It is still Elizabeth, her voice, her concern, her eyes; there is no mistake about that, there is no doubt, but Jennifer wears the hazmat suit.

It wasn't the best decision, and Jennifer doesn't apologize for doing what she did, yet she has to wonder if preserving a life really equals saving it.

                      *

The puddle jumper returns while she is in the infirmary and everything happens too fast – the flight, the landing, people needing her and the alarms going off, and it's not until few hours later when she sees the Colonel.

She tries to apologize, but Colonel stops her, cuts her off by gently placing a hand on her shoulder. Jennifer looks into his eyes and thinks about death, about finality of it. It's there and certain, when it happens, and it doesn't leave the empty shell of hope in it's wake.

For that reason alone death can be comforting.

But one like Sparky that's not intended but captures so much attention, I can't think of.

And the fact that we've had to work so hard to justify our ship all these years and yet it came out as good as it did in the end is a minor miracle. I don't mean it ended well. I mean that so many people now see the feelings between them and the potential that it could have been something. The old perception vs. what TPTB say they are intending question will never be answered completely.

Now I promised a fic. It's a bit more subtle than I intended but this is what my fingers typed. It's a tag for Conversion.

Compared to how I was expecting it to end (after finding out Weir would only be in one eppy in S5, I honestly thought that: 1) there would be serious other-ship angst; 2) she'd never be thought of again; 3) things would be business as usual with all the characters, especially John) I think we turned out darn well.

I say that considering that in all the years of SG, we've only had 1 official ship sanctioned and fully approved. As I've said before (and will say again in the upcoming recaps), in retrospect we got a fairly satisfying ending. As SR said it wasn't 'happy', but if you're a romantic, and you are okay accepting that 'Romeo & Juliet' feel for a story, we did get a pretty good ending. I hate how Elizabeth ended, but I didn't hate how broken up John is about it--and it's not just once, it's not just that one scene in Adrift. He acts that way when he sees her over and over again. Even Mallozzi recognized the hurt enough to consider putting a line about it in Remnants. Mallozzi of all people!

All told, for what we were expecting? We got it pretty good.

And I stand *STANDS* and applaud you for the wonderful fic. They were perfectly in character, it was brilliant.

Also wonderful! I don't know enough to know much about how Jennifer evolves, but I like how you've characterized her here.

I characterized her the way I'd like to see her characterized, I guess (and some writers did write her like that - compassionate, and when it came to medicine, she knew what to do. I haven't seen the flirty or stoopid looking Keller eps, and I'm glad I didn't.)

Now I wish I could come up with more.

I love love love the naughty motivators. That first one is priceless. It looks like he's thinking "wow they look bigger when she pushes her arms up like that." *snort*

And love the fic and the discussion. I also love how I stirred things up. *grin*
