Alright! I mentioned that Irresponsible was sandwiched between two great Season 3 episodes--so now that we're past THAT, let's get to THIS:

                    The Tao of Rodney

You know, it's funny, but when I think of my favorite SGA Sparky episodes, TOR never quite makes the top 5 list. I don't know why--if it's because it's Rodney centric, which kinda makes me forget about it until I actually watch it, or if it's just one of those episodes that doesn't have a hook for me specifically, like the 'carry' scene in Echoes or every Sheppard-Weir centric scene in The Eye.

Because, to be honest, TOR actually has some GREAT Sparky moments. Actually, it is probably the best episode to epitomize what many of us love about the Sparky connection--that undeniable bond between Elizabeth and John that goes beyond boss-to-2IC, or even just acquaintances. If you want a good argument as to why Elizabeth and John just work, make sure to load your arsenal with TOR scenes. There's nothing that screams Sparky in any of them, really--but perhaps that's what makes them great. They're just everyday life on Atlantis, as our two faves go about trying to save a close friend and interacting on a day-to-day level. Much of that interaction is humorous and personal--and yet so comfortable they go about it without blinking an eye. If anyone doubts John and Elizabeth are close, wave TOR in front of them. *waves Sparky flag*

Of course, there's more to TOR than just Sparky (really, where?). Thanks to writer Damian Kindler (who now runs Amanda Tapping's show Sanctuary) we actually get a story that is chock full of wonderful character moments--and a really standout performance from David Hewlett, whom I applaud wholeheartedly here. Overall, it's a truly excellent episode of SGA, one which has some great dialogue all the way through. It may be funny to point out dialogue, but I guess that shows how well-written it was. It's generally a very solid episode.

Why, you ask? Let's find out!

We start out with Rodney and the group exploring the recently 'unsunk' areas of Atlantis (slight question--if the Replicators 'repaired' them, wouldn't they look like all the other halls, and not covered in slime? *shrugs*). We set up the first set of character interactions with an argument between McKay and Zelenka--with McKay berating of course. Points to Damian Kindler for the continuity of his episode--both with Zelenka and Rodney's relationship, and even bringing in Doctor Esposito early so we don't have to wonder where she came from.

The machine they're working on gives off a lovely spiral of light, affecting Rodney, much to his dismay.

A check-up from Carson, complete with some needling from Sheppard--sends Rodney off on his way, seemingly alright. One of the things I love about this scene is that element I pointed out earlier--dialogue.

McKAY: One more time: mysterious energy pulse from a device created by the Ancients. I mean, who knows what kind of long-term effects I could be in for? I mean, there's gross mutation, giantism, invisibility ...
SHEPPARD: That would be cool. *I* turned into a bug. (Rodney narrows his eyes at him.)
BECKETT: Alright. Like I said, as far as I can tell, he's as healthy as a horse. (To Rodney) I'm clearing you for active duty.
McKAY: Are you insane?! (He turns to Elizabeth and John.) Look, I need to be put under guard. Who knows what I could become? (John rolls his eyes. Elizabeth looks at Carson.)
WEIR: What are the chances it could make him more pleasant?
                    McKAY: Oh, thank you!
SHEPPARD: I'll keep an eye on him.
                    WEIR: Thank *you*!
Anyone else get tickled that John mentions his own mutation from Conversion?

                    Sparky element: body language

Love the way Elizabeth looks at him here.

As Rodney himself suspects, the machine has done more to him than Carson initially diagnoses. The first radical change is Super hearing. Which leads to Rodney overhearing a funny conversation by his teammates. And Ronon's obsession with fat Rodney, apparently.

Anyone else think it's funny they got summoned over the intercom rather than through their headsets?

As John and his team go off to save Major Lorne, Elizabeth and Zelenka narrow down the purpose of the machine that zapped Rodney--human genetic mutation. As so often happens in this episode, we see the characters coming to good use, even in smaller moments--for example, here, Elizabeth has been summoned by Zelenka to help him because he appreciates her Ancient expertise, not just because she's the head of the expedition--or the only character available at the time. For me, it seems Tao does this much more effectively than many other SGA episodes.

The return of the rescue mission heralds new symptoms for Rodney--telekinesis, along with super hearing--I really enjoy the sarcasm with which everyone regards his 'saving the day', and then his turning around and shocking the socks off everyone by lifting Carson off the ground. Great special effect, by the way.

Why is poor Carson the one who always gets manhandled when something is wrong with Rodney?

One of the reasons I praise David Hewlett here is because he acts through those personalities of Rodney quite well. Again, as in The Return, he seems to go through all those moods in a balanced way. Initially scared, Rodney is now shown to be arrogantly excited about his 'new powers'. Oh, the potential!

                    Attached at the hip...again...

Now, the next scene is one of my all-time faves, and really I'm sticking it in here because we're in the Sparky thread. I bow to Mr. Kindler for putting this in because honestly it's nothing more than a humor moment between John and Elizabeth (and Radek). We don't learn much more about the machine in it.

ANCIENT LAB. John and Elizabeth are working on separate consoles next to each other while other scientists are working on various other parts of the lab.
SHEPPARD: Look, we all agree the Ancients were pretty screwed up.
                    WEIR: We do?
SHEPPARD: All the ones *I* met were arrogant, condescending – and *not* for good reason. They made giant mistakes and *never* fixed `em.
                    WEIR: They *were* still human.
SHEPPARD: But then there were all those crazy rules.
WEIR: Those only came after they ascended.
SHEPPARD: Whatever, alright? (He walks over to her.) Maybe this thing doesn't work on everyone. Who knows? But we *do* know it works on McKay.
WEIR: It has only been a day.
SHEPPARD: Assuming it's safe – well, to be honest, even if it's not – if we can get a significant advantage over the Wraith and Replicators ...
WEIR: John, I agree – this device *may* have great potential.
SHEPPARD: And with great potential comes great responsibility – I know.
WEIR: Like a lot of other things we have found in this city, it is a very advanced piece of technology. For all we know, it could also be very dangerous.
                    SHEPPARD: I'm just saying ...
WEIR: Yes, you can be next.
                    SHEPPARD: Thank you!
WEIR: Hmm! (John walks away as Elizabeth shakes her head in irritation. Radek, who was working nearby, turns and leans nonchalantly on her console.)
ZELENKA: You know, if you're compiling a list, I'd ...
WEIR: Could we stay focused, please?
                    ZELENKA: Right.
This scene is one of those I'm referring to above as core Sparky. Joking with each other, reading each other's minds--I always laugh at Elizabeth's exasperated 'yes, you can be next' and John's cutesy smile as he tries to get her to say it.

Anyone notice how hard Elizabeth (or is it Torri?) is trying not to smile as John rambles?

                    Cute Zelenka/Weir moment here, too.

With Rodney not overtly concerned about his enhanced powers, he (after stealing a donut from Carson--another funny effect) discovers he can now read minds. In a nice show of continuity, we bring back Dr. Esposito, who seems to be admiring Ronon (okay, what happened to her for him?).

As I mentioned, nice character flow throughout, and having Ronon 'shadow' Rodney is a nice touch, so we can see more of their relationship. And we get a second pick by Ronon at McKay's weight:

McKAY (to Ronon through a mouthful of donut): You know, we could be a team. You could be my sidekick.
DEX: "Sidekick." McKAY: Yeah – it'd be like Batman and Ronon. Has a nice ring to it.
DEX: Yeah, you keep eating like that, it's more like Fatman.
Can I applaud the clever use of dialogue here as well, by wrapping up a joke with Rodney's perpetual love of Batman AND Ronon's sometimes maligned status as a 'chewbacca' sidekick!

Love the Lord of the Rings style 'magic hand' here.

Rodney's ability to read minds leads to another humorous plot device--self-dialogging as Weir and Ronon look on. Now, I have to applaud the actors here because this is a lot more difficult than it looks. As David Hewlett monologues, Torri and Jason have to 'mime' not only their frustration at his reading their minds, but the facade of 'thinking' what Rodney is saying they're thinking. Very nicely done.

Right around the midway mark, we find that Rodney's 'new powers' aren't all they're cracked up to be...and the story begins to take a serious turn.

Coming up...a death that isn't, rehashing some old episode stomping ground, the softer side of McKay, and, of course, more Sparky!

Each one specially programmed for their mistresses.

So that way, Lizzie gets the original Shep, and we each get a Shep clone of our very own. Win-win for everyone.
