Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
It means being humorous or joking. It means not being serious. How do I explain my annoyance about Teyla. It is more against TPTW than Teyla. There's a patronizing quality in the manner they write Teyla. She's not a full human being, but the stereotype of a noble, non-white warrior. IMO, I see sexist and racist tinges to their writing of Teyla.
I agree on this. In the beginning she was obviously meant to be the hwat young thang walking around in an obscenely looking skirt, but I think Rachel had shaped her into something more over the years. Teyla fans have noticed that, but sadly, PTB have missed their opportunity to shape Teyla into something more than non white perfect warrior. And obviously, they had no idea what to do with a perfect non white warrior mommy.
The other characters suffered a similar fate, either being underused or overused. John is like a recurring character through this final season, while PTB couldn't stop shoving Rodney or Jennifer into our faces. Especially Jennifer who got - how many episodes all for herself? I suppose that was PTB's tactic to show us why we should luuuuurve Jen. (heh, this reminds me of a recent discussion about characters on Vegas thread. There are people who complain about character imbalance, and when John gets an episode, they hate it. Even though he is part of their chosen ship. Nevermind.)
SGA PTW (not PBT any more, I keep forgetting!) have done the worst mistake they possibly could - they ignored their fans, the story, and the people this story was/is about. Is anyone then surprised the show got canceled?
I guess that's what I mean, about shows & the genre evolving. When I was writing the above I couldn't think of one show on nowadays that's been successful that's comparable to the Treks. Like, straight-up sci-fi sci-fi. I think the X-Files turned the genre on it's head and opened the door for the 'new sci-fi', which includes the shows above.
Something I always hoped for Atlantis to do (and is my dream) is to do more of the new sci-fi stuff. Nothing dumb like exploding tumours, but you know, there's a whole world out there in Pegasus will all kinds of mysterious stuff going on! Oh, and then there's the city. I tend not to like straight up sci-fi so whenever there's a big space battle I just kind of go 'meh'.
I like my sci-fi in a sci-fi setting but doing more of the new sci-fi stuff. And non-sci-fi stuff like The Eye. (minus the shield, but you get my point?)
And that's one of the many reasons why I've never been able to buy into a Sheppard/Teyla pairing; because the writing for it has always given me this creeping feeling of a 'civilized white man tames barbarian woman of color' thing. And that disgusts me.
That's what I though plus it's a kind of cliche thats been around for decades.
You know that thing about knowing what women looking like when they get older? I'm not gonna live to 10,000 John I'm sure we could find enough room in there for two if we had to

Dismissed No. I can't stand up right now. Have you thought about wearing a flakjacket? On second thought, do you have that pic of Rodney kissing Carson? That always does the trick...

Teheeee they're great especially the second one! You're the evil genius of snark and capping! Great job!!!!
Definitely equals. The thing that stopped me watching so much in later years (apart from the later timeslot) was that Scully seemed to switch from non-believer (or at least rationaliser) to believer overnight. That didn't make sense to me.
I hope so. BSG proves you need an end plan (although I haven't seen past 4.5)
As for

That's my thought too, but 'needs' and 'wants' aren't always the same thing
Edited to add:
I think the Mulder/Scully switching stereotypes comment is interesting.
Mulder is not 'macho' as such, but he is still a regular guy who is driven by what he believes. Scully is competent and professional, but not the usual, well, emotionally and socially shut off ***** that that usually entails on tv. Both of those roles proved at the time that it is/was possible to be (and write for) not-the-norm.
Whereas if the X-files were written now, Mulder would be emotionally crippled, cry at every life altering event, and knit in his spare time.
Scully would be uptight, have no knowledge of social interaction. She would however have a huge bust, and could have competed in America's Next Top Model if she desired. She hates how she is always judged by her looks, and not by, like, her ability.
Well, I think television has progressed enough that men and women would not be protrayed with such stereotypes. I hope that is not what might be on the horizon. I am not as connected with youth culture.

Snort!

They certainly were tone deaf to the situation and stubbornly pushed their favorites even to the detriment of the show.
You know, I guess I'm pretty pathetic. I was just watching Jeopardy! and the answer to the last question was Johnny Cash. I immediately thought of Stargate and John. *sighs and shakes head* This one track mind of mine.
---
"Jeopardy?" "It's the name of the show, "Jeopardy". "Sounds dangerous." "Yeah, and they have this thing called "Double Jeopardy". It's twice as dangerous."
(maybe that's not exactly right, but anyway... )

Just what i needed....those were great...*sigh* I LOVE captions...we should have a Caption Day...do we have one already?

Is that why her hair keeps getting shorter, so he can't grab it and drag her off?
I'm another huge Lost fan. It's some of the most brilliant and thrilling television on today. If I have time, I try to watch each episode for a second time to catch more of the details and nuances.
Yeah, Lost is pretty great. You're watching it and it's like Ahh, what the heck is going on?! It's addicting - you have to keep watching in order to try and figure everything out and hope they drop some new crumb of info for you to ponder over. It's nice being forced to think about things.
We started with Lost in the beginning but quit last season. I don't watch TV to think. I want to actually like the characters also.
But I think it's great that all of us don't have to agree on everything.
Oh, and Supernatural is my new favorite show. It's got it all.
