Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
Aha! I figured it was one or the other; I just couldn't remember which one.

He is indeed and he speaks his mind. He doesn't like to be censored. In fact he said so in an interview right here on GW once. It's even called "Frankly Flanigan" and includes this quote: Listen to me: I'm not much for being censored in these interviews. I'll be frank. We had a lot of problems with "Epiphany" on a lot of different levels. And I don't think Brad [Wright] or I were really happy with the end result of "Epiphany." Look in the interviews section of the main page. It's way back in 2006 I think. There are lots of good tidbits in that one. Fodder for a future discussion.
How anyone could think it was mean to not want a pregnant woman in combat amazes me. It was just the Sheyla shippers deluding themselves again. Here was Teyla pregnant with another man's child and all they could think about was how to get her together with John. Ewwwww. And even after we found out she and Kanaan were to remain a couple, it's still all about getting her together with John. How in the world after knowing her for 5 years did he think he had the right to be jealous of her being with another guy? What in the world was he waiting for all that time? Badwritingbadwritingbadwritingbadwriting. I added one. Joe said he played it as jealousy in S4 because he had no direction as to how he should be feeling.
In S5, however they hardly spoke or looked at each other. I mean literally. It was obvious that the writers were trying to separate them in people's minds. From things JM and others have said I think they now believe that it was clear that Teyla/Kanaan was settled in everyone's minds. Which once again goes to show how clueless they are.
But ofcourse, protecting your pregnant teamamte and being upset over the fact that she endangered herse?f, her child and her team is a proof of jealousy. Right. Yes. Stephanie Meyer, anyone?
Of course, everything in the name of the ship. It doesn't matter if we see John as a pathetic guy, pining over a woman who has a family. Or even a home wrecker, yes? Because it's the ship that matters, character assassination doesn't.
John was angry with Teyla for going out on missions when she knew she was pregnant, thus endangering her, her baby, and the team. In many respects, it's like how John reacted in The Gift when he wanted her to see Heightmeyer; he was looking out for Teyla as her team leader, and nothing more. Other than that, it was the same ignoring each other like in previous seasons.
In light of what we've seen in JoeF's performance in Seasons 4 & 5 and his more recent comments, most of us have taken his "jealous" comment to mean that John wasn't jealous of Kanaan, he was jealous because he couldn't have his own family with Elizabeth. Sparky wins.
Jealousy is a complex emotion and it's not exclusively tied to "I want her but can't have her" thing. One can be jealous of someone elses accomplishments, or the fact that someone is having a family and perhaps their friendship won't be the same any more. In that case, we can talk about fear of loss, loss of easy friendship in this case, fearing your friend will forget about you and such. That makes more sense than John the pathetic jealous guy scenario.

Makes me weep for the future of literature, just as certain writers made me weep for the future of SGA. It all ends very badly.
This may just be me, but I don't see much 'jealousy' out of that scenario. However, I can see how John could be jealous with Teyla -- she has been a part of his team for five years, and I can see him become a bit upset if she suddenly left to become all domestic and off-screen.
And I'm tired. Going to bed, but I'll drop off a link to the Daily Game Link.

That's very insightful analysis. Once Teyla became pregnant by Kanaan, the writers knew they would end up writing soap operaish scenes (I don't think they could rise above the level of soap opera) if they wanted to resurrect Sheyla. BTW, who is Stephanie Meyer?

The writer wannabe who spawned "Twilight". Don't read that. Trust me. It's worse than certain ships.
This is rather off topic, but I will plow ahead anyways.
I was browsing in the Sheyla thread because I was bored and they had a post about John dreaming about going on a date with Teyla. What's that all about???? They even had a picture.

No, John wasn't dreaming. He was hallucinating - the S5 opening scene starts as a romantic dinner, where it's obvious Joe/John is trying not to laugh, because Teyla's hair reminds of Pebbles Flinstone. Then, suddenly Ford pops up and in the next moment we see John bleeding and under a pile of rubble. He was knocked on the head and hallucinating, probably because of guilt, because Teyla was missing and he was supposed to save her. John probably feared she will share Ford's and Elizabeth's fate.

That's a good point. In a way, he is losing Teyla, just after he's lost Elizabeth and Carson. Unlike Elizabeth and Carson, Teyla's not dead, she's still there, but now there's something that's going to be taking her away from him and the rest of their team. It'll never be the way it was before. John may not be good at showing his emotions, but he clearly craves security in stable relationships with friends and family. And his relationship security blanket had taken some major hits in that period of time.

Do you have LJ account?
Yes, but I'm not adept with computers. I barely know how to use it. I subscribe to the John/Elizabeth site.
And you can count on me not to commit character assassination.
Damn right. I'm looking forward to it.
*yawns* Argh, it's late. Time for this little kitty to go to sleep. Nighty-night, Sparkies, see you tomorrow!

Feel free to friend me ( http://anuna-81.livejournal.com/ ), and I'll show you some of my reviews for that "romantic" dinner scene. You'll have a good laugh.
