Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon. Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

Guess Lizzie must've had those martini glasses tucked away somewhere... She and John must knock 'em back on the balcony after a long hard day at the office.(This is legal notice that any attempt to censor or delete, for the purpose of oppressing fair and open discussion, any statement made by me will be considered a violation of my right to free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and will be dealt with in accordance with federal law.)

Be there!(This is legal notice that any attempt to censor or delete, for the purpose of oppressing fair and open discussion, any statement made by me will be considered a violation of my right to free speech as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, and will be dealt with in accordance with federal law.)

So many pages. So much sparky. lol
Questions on Echoes
1) Echoes is one of those episodes intended to save money, by making the story Atlantis-centric. How does this story rate for you among other episodes? Better or worse that the 'higher budget' ones?
I know it is written as a cheap show (no guest stars, all standing sets, few visfx) but cheap doesn't translate to bad. What is the point of having an ensemble cast if you only ignore them? Or use them incorrectly?
I found this to be one of the better ones, for a variety of reasons
* it sounded awful in the blurb - wtf whales come for a visit?
* every character was used correctly, and had a moment to shine
* the plot wasn't entirely clear (it wasn't complicated by any means, but i couldn't tell at the beginning what the end of the ep was going to be)
* the drama/tension slowly built over the whole ep
I like character drama within sci fi. I know some of SGA's writers have criticised BSG for essentially being too character focused and not action oriented enough, but it is possible to find a balance. It didn't help that while taking a swipe at BSG for doing that, said PTW commented on how much happened on SGA coz of all the explosions and stuff (I'm paraphrasing).
You can't have one without the other. A space battle is cool, but if you don't care about the characters, then there is no drama.
2) There is a LOT of stuff going on in Echoes. Does that work for you? And how do you think the writers managed to keep this story 'reigned in' rather than feeling crunched, as in some other fast-paced episodes?
I've never really thought of it as there being a lot of stuff happening. It all flowed logically from one point to the other, so I never noticed it until you pointed it out
My only criticism in terms of the action is the scene in the ZPM room between John and Rodney, where Rodney is going on and on about the danger. Okay, we get it Rodney. You think its a bad idea. But as Carter said about her job, you're there to present the risks, not to decide what course of action to take.
3) Elizabeth chastizes Rodney for looking up "Sam", asking he make sure it not cut into his work time. Did the idea of them having 'schedules' and possibly being punished for diverting too much surprise you?
Not really. It's a priveledge even knowing about the stargate programme, let alone getting to atlantis. They have to make the most of the opportunity. And Rodney is a supreme micro manager. People with their fingers in too many pies need to be told to focus on the job at hand occassionally, and leave others to do theirs. What's more surprising is that he's never made a mistake by micro-managing somebody else and neglecting his own job
4) John, for me, has an interesting attitude throughout Echoes--how did you like his personality here? Did it fit? Was it OOC at all?
It fitted to me. The earlier stuff was more like his off-duty character, but when the pressure came on, he shifted back to leader rather than buddy
5) We've already featured some discussion on 'ships here. How did each of these ships appear in Echoes to you--be completely honest, even if you are a major fan of one:
a) McShep
Let me say that they only way I could see Shep coming out of the closet is if he had just been in there with Elizabeth I see nothing between these two other than friends. Rodney idolises Shep, and Shep thinks of him as a socially challenged brother. I suppose you could make a case for John/Ronon, but I think that is partly due to Jason (like Rachel) just being one of those people who has natural on screen chemistry with everyone
b) Spanky
They stole the show. Rachel and Jason have talent. Let them use it. Both of them light up the room when they smile, and yet Teyla is essentially a very formal character, with Ronon as a big grunter.
I always try not to ship them (its partly because it falls into the cliche of sparkys shipping spanky/sheylas shipping weirdwell) but its hard not to.
c) Sparky
I know there is the carry scene, but I think sparky plays a bit of a back seat in this ep. The scene in the control room carries more weight with me, when he is watching her, and then actually catches her when she collapses.
6) Why do you think Binder was able to write Ronon so effectively here? What made him so different than in some of his 'Chewie' style moments?
Key word = write. He gave him something to do. Ronon has always proven to be a good friend, no matter the context. I've never liked him in chewie mode, as it seems no different to having ford there
7) I poked fun at the science element in Echoes--what parts seemed the most implausible to you?
The CME going right at the deadalus, with no spillover (the deadalus is tiny compared to atlantis[2.5-3km wide]).
The CME stopping at exactly the right time
Why would the whales remember something that happened 15000yrs ago? We can't even get stuff that happened last week correct, so why would they know exactly what to do?
The only bit that seemed to have some reality was the 'what, already?' 'we didn't have far to go' interchange when they headed off towards the sun. Although isn't looking directly at the sun supposed to be REALLY bad for your eyes? The deadalus must have tinted windows for just such an occasion
8) What was your favorite scene in Echoes, or your favorite line?
The spanky scenes
What do you mean NO?
Rodney's ELIZABETH and his expression when she collapses
The underwater jumper scene
9) Who had the best character moments in Echoes?
Ronon
10) Why do you think Echoes is a fan favorite for many?
Everyone has something to do, everyone has someone else to look out for (most in a non shippy way)
--bonus for Sparkies--
11) What made the 'carry' so squee-worthy for you? And why do you think John carried her to the infirmary, rather than waiting for them to bring a stretcher? Even if the infirmary was packed, we know that they wouldn't have hesitated, it being Elizabeth.
I don't know why he would carry her, considering he had to carry her down the stairs to the transporter, then walk from the transporter to the infirmary. If there was no spinal injury (there wasn't coz he caught her) I personally would have slung her over my shoulder. Not the most dignified way of carrying her though, and as SR said, the image of a man carrying a woman is one of the most romantic images on tv (and through a doorway no less).
For that matter, why didn't they just beam her directly to the Daedalus.
There's a plot hole for you - they put all those sick people on the ship, then fly it right at the sunsigpic
