I also limit my surfing at GW to Sparky and the SEW thread.

I actually don't do 'fandom' stuff anymore much, because people take it way too seriously. It's sorta the same across the board on any show you watch. I LOVE Supernatural (to the point of forming a fan group at one point) but the SPN fans can be psycho at times and I felt the need to back away. My enjoyment/fandom is generally very mental; I like storyline developments and production elements like directing, etc. Having hot stars helps, of course, but that's not the only reason I watch most things.

But sometimes I just want to enjoy the show and I hate hearing people constantly bash every single little change because it's not exactly the same as it was the season before. I don't mind show changes, new characters, etc--I'm open minded as far as how creators do things (unless they're obnoxious about getting rid of particular characters with no good reason why, SGA case in point) but sometimes fan possessiveness can get really scary.

I've seen a bit of the same with House, MD, which I've just re-gotten into. I don't even try doing the fan thing with my other favorite show, LOST. I'm scared just by the few things I've seen. The one fan base that seems harmless (so far) is NCIS. But then, they also don't have as many fansites, so it might have to do with the demographic who watch.

I hear you about the over-nitpicking of things by fans; that's usually a turn-off for me too. But I also agree that when the changes are so insanely screwed up (as they were with SGA), then I think the nitpicking is justified.

I haven't taken a look at NCIS fandom. The show itself is satisfying enough for me that I've never felt any interest in participating in that fandom. *shrugs*

While packing for my Florida trip yesterday I realized I have a severe wardrobe deficiency which I just got back from correcting. I have to report that I got $360 worth of clothes for $111.84 at my favorite outlet including a $118 pair of silk pants for...wait for it...$12.25. They're clearing out all the summer stuff which since I'm going to Miami is just what I needed. *dances*

It's amazing to me just when viewing vids on YouTube all the Sparky fans there. I've gotten nice reviews from people I never heard of. The Sparky fanbase will never be counted properly. *glares at TBTW*

Being a tiny bit evil just makes life more interesting...

Most of Sparky's fanbase is on LJ, though I think some may have been on GW in the early days (which were before my time). With all the politicking and general air of intimidation that seems to pervade some areas of GW, I can't really blame them for leaving. The Sparky thread is really one of the few safe and sane places left at GW.

I do get the feeling that people are moving on to other fandoms, but when something happens to get everyone's attention, the usual comment is even though they've moved on, Sparky is still their OTP. I think Sparky will stand the test of time.

I totally understand that. Though I must admit to adding to the ruckus in the rest of GW. I'm apparently getting a reputation.

True. I was here for a lot of the really exciting times, both good and bad. Everywhere you went, if you proclaimed yourself a Sparky lover you got shouted down or told you were stupid. I was called a teenage girl once. LOL

I used to frequent a number of threads but began to feel unwelcome.



It helps to have a thick skin and a big sense of humor. I always looked at the so-called ship wars the same way I do sports. It should be okay to trash talk the other team and tease each other in friendly ways, but for some reason both shippers and non-shippers take themselves way too seriously.

I missed the exciting times. I've just heard the war stories... LOL

Sports is a good way to look at this stuff. Unfortunately, some people have no sense of humor.

I'm a bad fangurl, too, when it comes to SEW. But with winter coming and my tv shows getting cancelled right and left (Pushing Daisies ), I'm hoping to spend more time there, and writing Sparky.

Regarding getting involved in a fandom, this is the only one I've really been in and I think it was just because I was so totally in love with Sparky and HAD to have someone to talk to about them. And this thread was and still is full of fun people to do that with. It is interesting, though. The ship that probably comes closest to Sparky for me is Doctor/Rose, but I have no desire to get into that fandom. I don't really talk to anyone about them (except RP ), so why don't I feel the need to talk to others about them? I think it just points out how special Sparky is.

Thanks. It's my husband's family reunion/Thanksgiving. They're a big loud Irish family, so it will all be good. Well, his sister is an anal passive aggressive martyr, but we just ignore her. Plus we've already had several cases of wine shipped down there. I'll be gone from Nov 25-Dec 1.

Good to know about your schedule... I was just thinking that since Thanksgiving is next week, most of us in the US will probably be busy with Thanksgiving weekend stuff and won't be available for a post-a-thon on the 29th. And then, of course, the next Saturday after that (Dec. 6) is the USC/UCLA game.

I was just thinking that since Thanksgiving is next week, most of us in the US will probably be busy with Thanksgiving weekend stuff and won't be available for a post-a-thon on the 29th. Maybe, the wine is just for Thanksgiving day. 40 Irish/Americans + 2 cases of wine = just enough for a meal. For the BBQ/pool party on Friday, a cousin is buying the beer.

Ah, football. I can't do the post-a-thon tomorrow either because of the VT/Duke game. The last time I tried to do both I couldn't concentrate on either. Plus my husband and I plan to do Christmas cards during the game. Multitasking is a must these days. Sigh.

Ouch. Yeah, the other time I tried to 'thon and watch football, I got a little lucky with the timing of halftime, but it was a major distraction. I ended up rewatching parts of it in the rerun the next morning. Still crazy fun, but I don't think I want to repeat it.
