Hello everyone! I am new here, but I love football... and John... and Shweir... so, I THINK I found the right place

@Eri - Beckham is a sissy. There are better players than him (or English national team ).

Oh, I know Beckham's hype! But most Americans don't, and I was hoping that he would stir up interest in the sport in general, just because of his fame. But as SK said, Americans are more interested in Kobe or Lebron or Pete Carroll. Heck, I think they'd be more interested in the Chargers and the 49ers, even with their season.

But the "real football" comment makes sense. There, you can only kick the ball or headbutt it (unless you're the goalie) whereas in all other versions of "football" you can pick up the ball and run with it. Some would think that really shouldn't be called "football" (like my Mum for instance)

And I'm not gonna get started on American Gridiron vs Rugby League. Something tells me that be dangerous discussion here.

And this is incredibly OT... let me think... I know, in the last episode of Press Gang (a British show from the early 90's) the newsteam got a football team together. Short of players, they asked Spike to join them, as he said he knew a lot about football. So he turns up on the day in full Gridiron gear, not realising that, being British, what they meant by "football" was really soccer.

Now my on-topic question is... With John's love of football, can anyone picture him making a similar sort of mistake (though not in Spike-style)?

And we call it Sparky. I'm not sure why, I only know that people object to the way "Shweir" sounded (or something like that--I wasn't here at the beginning).

Question before I post the next wallpaper/sig set. Does anyone have the link to the Westgate stories. I hadn't gotten into The West Wing back when they were being updated, so I never even looked at them. Now that I'm a mad WW fan, I'm interested.

In one of the early episodes, I forget which one, John made a negative remark about Canadian Football. That's not soccer, I know, but I would love to have seen a soccer/football discussion. With attempts to explain the difference to Ronon. JM and some of the other writers seems to be college football fans, so I guess that's where it comes from. I know that JF is not, but he does a good job faking it.

He 'insults' Canadian Football in Echoes when Rodney isn't paying attention to him (or can't hear him because their eardrums burst). He yells at him something like 'the Canadian Football League's a joke' alongside 'Zelenka is smarter than you' or something.

JM and the others get together for NFL games so I know they're huge American Football fans. JF plays it off pretty well, but I don't sense him buried in the stats like some fans--what would have been funny would have been to see him eagerly awaiting mail call each week or something for football scores. That would have made him die hard.

They'd have to have someone from another country beyond Canada or the US explain football, and I can't think of anyone who would be able to do that convincingly--maybe Zelenka?

Actually, Carson would have been a lot of fun as a football fan--they should have had him debate that soccer was better than football with John to Teyla. That might have been a fun scene.

Apparently Carl Binder is a huge USC fan... I knew there was a reason why I liked him.

In Hide & Seek (season 1), he makes a random remark about hockey not being a real man's sport, and he tells Teyla not to tell Rodney because he's Canadian.

In Echoes (season 3) he yells at Rodney, who can't hear him, 'Canadian football is a joke', 'Celine Dion is overrated' and 'Zelenka is smarter than you'.

I think he said once that he doesn't like to watch sports. He prefers to participate, e.g. skiing, skateboarding, surfing and all those other extreme things he does. or used to do Hey, now that they're canceled I guess his restrictions are lifted.

Zelenka could probably be a football (soccer) and hockey fan because AFAIK both sports are rather popular in Czech republic. Carson would be a die hard soccer fan - hey the Scots are the best soccer fans in the whole world, apart form the Brazilian fans. Soccer VS football discussion between John and Crason would have been made of win - after Conversion for example when John is recovering. S1 Teyla doesn't get much of the Earth culture references, not in the way they were written, like a cringeworthy ship attempt. (there are better ways of writing boyhero meets hot alien.)

S1 Teyla doesn't get much of the Earth culture references, not in the way they were written, like a cringeworthy ship attempt. (there are better ways of writing boyhero meets hot alien.)

Maybe it's because many of the Teyla/Earth culture references were written as a cringeworthy ship attempt. Sorry, tptb, not working; any kind of J/E trumps sad cliche romance any day.
