Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
Not to keep harping on the Firefly comparison...but well maybe a little bit more. If you haven't seen Serenity, don't click.
Spoiler:
Wouldn't it have been totally squeeful to have seen Mal, Zoe and the team after Serenity dealing with the loss of Wash. The angst, the drama, the gunfire.
And I too always thought of Teyla as John's Zoe. Imagine how well that relationship could have been written. Now John just looks like he doesn't quite know what to make of her, like she's someone he's just met and he's being careful not to offend her. And she acts like he's someone from another planet that she hasn't a clue about....oh wait. I guess they have written that one pretty well.
Can I just say AMEN to all this. And there were actually times when they wrote this, like in Missing
Spoiler:
when John was teasing Teyla:
SHEPPARD (to Teyla): Ooh! Look at you! Got a date?
TEYLA (rolling her eyes): Please! You will contact us if you need us?
SHEPPARD: Oh, we'll be fine. You kids have fun.
I can see Mal and Zoe doing that scene. Oh, what could have been...
[spoilers]YOU THINK YOU'RE CHEWING YOUR NAILS? Georgia's ranked #3 and we're playing #9 Alabama on Saturday night. USC JUST LOST. It changes the whole picture! Now this game is bigger than ever. GAH! *headdesk* *trips* *flails*
Jayne and Ronon are similar to me - though I think Jayne is actually more complex. Which is completely funny when you think back on Jayne being Jayne.
LOL. I mean, Jayne being more complex -- what a paradox! I too think Jayne is more complex than Ronon, though Ronon could easily be made as complex as well. (It seems every time the waters dip their toes in the pool of complexity, they immediately pull back out.) Hey, if fic writers can do it, can't the real writers? The acting is just fine, but you gotta admit that SGA has below-par material as compared to Firefly. But I think Ronon would be different than Jayne (though they are similar as well), because Jayne is kinda dumb in a comical way, but not overplayed. Ronon's different than that, but he could be more unique and interesting, too.
Who do you think Elizabeth and Sparky would be? I don't think she or Sparky has a straight-up comparision like the Mal/Zoe-John/Teyla comparision, so I guess that would make her quite unique. I would consider Inara, but it doesn't fit; besides, I've always imagined Kate to be more Inara-esque. (Hee, Falcon, look at that -- John/Kate and Mal/Inara! *g*) But Sparky, and Elizabeth? Unique, hell yus.
How was whatever this episode was called? I heard they recycled sparky eyesex and gave it to the other ship. If they did, I'm totally loling at the obvious.

I've heard that too, and I've heard who these new "villains" are and man, where did originality go? Ah yes, it's long gone. Also, about the eyesex... I guess poor Shep was having gas and I'm in no way convinced it was actually better than Siege. (I'm wondering if Kanaan is still alive? Yes? There you go. Fake, fake, fake ship, always had been, always will be).

One thing to remember. First Contact was written by Gero. I caught that supposed eyesex moment. It was no such thing.
Spoiler:
The control room was about to explode. John told Teyla to leave. She tried to disobey as usual. There was a look between them. He said something like "please" I forget the dialogue and she reluctantly left. Now you can look at this 2 ways. 1. You're my teammate. We've already lost Rodney we think. I can't lose you too. 2. Your child needs you. What are you thinking? I chose the former because again it's Gero. I think if he intended that moment to be shippy it's even squickier than that kiss in S2. The woman essentially has a husband and child. Did they conveniently disappear into a black hole? Just badwritingbadwritingbadwriting.
Now I want to discuss more important things. Considering our discussion of this week about John there were a couple of glaring things in this ep. Even my husband noticed.
Spoiler:
John was made fun of twice. Once Rodney and Daniel snickered about John qualifying for Mensa. And later Zelenka made a crack about having to "dumb down" his explanation of some technobabbly for Sheppard. This again is Gero and I for one am sick of it. Thank God he's not writing the movie. No tellin' how much damage he'll do in The Lost Tribe and Brainstorm. He should have multiple chances to get his digs in, especially in that last one.

Visit us at SGA Rising for our version of season six.
Oh dear.... can I hear some good news today? Have something nice happening to me for a change?
You know it was only a matter of time when John gets to be mocked at. I hate when he's dumbed down, I hate when any of the characters is. Of course we can also see Gero not understanding some other things he is still trying to write? Man, that's like bad!fic.
Is "affronts to physics" who I think it is? (I never liked physics because it has a high calculus content, and that was my stumbling block in maths).
"Affronts to physics" is a situation when the writer ignores real-life physics either from lack of knowledge or from a desire to have an easier job. The latest affronts to physics on SGA are:
Spoiler:
First contact: The alien soldier being killed without triggering the self-destruct
The Shrine: Rodney surviving
The Seed: John surviving the Jumper crash
Search and Rescue: John surviving (the liver seem to be the TPTWs favorite area)
The Last Man: Pretty much everything in that episode
You'd never believe the maths I had to do in order to write some of my stories.

The Sewer has probably gone into a sewer along with Darth Tagaan. Have you even watched said episode?

Gero makes me sick too. The worst affronts to physics I have seen not only in SGA but in the sci-fi genre as a whole have been written by him.
