Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
may I just say how alternate ego's and my Big bang story is going to be totally awesome? I hope we'll finish it on time, but in case we don't... it's still going to be great!
Eh we had a rainstorm here too - luckily no tornadoes. They don't happen here.
I'm waiting for those discussion questions!
Discussion questions...coming up! Answer what you like!
Critical Mass discussion:
1) Do you believe the ability to place a bomb on Atlantis--especially the way it was done in this episode--was plausible?
2) How did you feel about the enemy being a Go'uld?
3) Why do you think the writers turned this episode into old home week (aka, brought back so many previous characters)?
4) Kavanaugh was particularly antagonistic in this episode. Do you think Elizabeth was right to suspect him most?
5) Do you agree with Kavanaugh's assessment of Elizabeth leading more by emotion than rational impartiality? If you do, why, and if you don't, where and how is he mistaken?
6) Many PTB get really antsy about actually showing torture in a show that's not built for it. Do you think TPTB copped out here by having Kavanaugh faint? Or was it appropriate for the SGA audience?
7) Did the twist at the end--the true perpetrator--catch you off guard?
8) Other than the obvious romantic implications Sparkies would like to see, would you have added any other 'bonding' elements to John and Elizabeth's relationship in this episode? Or was it done exactly as it should have been?
9) How was Teyla's storyline handled? If you approved, what did you like? If you didn't, what could have been changed to make it better?
10) Do you prefer these episodes--Atlantis contained--over the Pegasus-exploration episodes? Do you like more or less?
11) How does this rank for you as a Carl Binder episode? Were the relationships on or off? Is he really the writer for Sparkies? Or was there just so much going on that not everything (like a Ronan/Teyla connection) could be addressed?
12) Did you understand the episode when you were finished with it? How long did it take you to understand all that was going on?
If anyone wants Beyond The Night sung by Rachel Luttrell, I have it. No background noises, nothing...just the song. Just PM me.
Love CM - it has the team and the city (team as in all of the people on the expedition). One of my fave episodes...and there's the obvious Sparky going on to.
I will answer the Q's later. For now here's my "C" wall. It's not Sparky but this one kinda made itself. I may do a Sparky C later. Now I'm off to finish D.

Visit us at SGA Rising for our version of season six.
First of all, and for the record I DO remember Twilight Bark. You see I didn't mind at least that SGC was included in this episode. i enjoyed pretty much every scene and here the writers showed us that they can, indeed handle lot of characters and a multi layered plot AND add some really good characterization. They only have to try. Ha.
One of my favorite things about CM is directing. This episode is a master piece IMO, especially that sequence with a song. God. So many things happening at the same time, the song itself, all turning out to be one amazing "Lord of the Rings" homage, and so many intense emotion. Damn damn damn.
I love the fact that Kavanaugh was here in this episode. Talk about a character we love to hate - for a reason. If you think Rodey is obnoxious, look at this guy. This is how lack of social skills looks like. Then, there was Hermiod, Novak, Skinner, I mean Colonel Caldwell, LAURA!!! OMG! How I love Laura! Talk about a waisted character! Why didn't they keep her? The character and the actress simply rock. She's one of the rare people who can steal a scene from Rodney using only her voice.
I loved how so many things happened, yet the plot didn't get lost anywhere, everyone was completely in character, everyone was doing something - something important, and we cared.
Teyla and her story line in here was one of my favorite things about CM. I'm glad they gave her the "emotional" aspect of the story, making her face the loss of a dear person. One random thing about me: there are two Stargate episodes that make me cry. one is SG - 1 "Redemption", precisely the moment when Teal'c talks to his son. It's not a tragic but deeply human moment, and it made me cry just like that. Critical Mass is the other episode that makes me cry - Charin and Teyla scenes to be precise. I had tears rolling down my cheeks every time I watched.
CM is also a wonderful Sparky fest. Not only that we got the first and the famous butt -on - the desk scene, this episode was all about that mutual understanding and support John and Elizabeth have. Like someone - was it Irish Eyes? said, this isn't about Elizabeth making a bad or morally wrong decision. John is right there beside her supporting her full force - and I love the fact that they're together in this and that she had a taste of what's like to be him, making questionable decisions. (Here's a plot bunny that jumped into my head yesterday - I can imagine two of them, after the events of CM, sitting in that movies room alone watching "Godfather" all three parts and discussing. I think it would work better than Elizabeth trying to discuss herself - discussing someone like Don Corleone, who is morally flawed yet as you watch the movie you simply like him - would yield an interesting conversation with lots of personal insight for Elizabeth. I wish I had time to write this idea down).
Uh oh I don't know what else to add... I commented on the lack of real torture earlier, that was a mistake I believe. I love the fact that we got an insight into Elizabeth's weak side. I also love that John was there beside her all the way and saw it too, coming to her to comfort her in some way at the end - which is one of the sweetest and to me, personally most favorite scenes in SGA.
I think this whole episode needs to be put into a video.
Just a song that reminds me of John and Elizabeth a lot...
Torri and Luci -would any of you be so nice to make me a wallpaper with these lyrics?

Flying without wings -- by Westlife
Everybody's looking for that something
One thing that makes it all complete
You find it in the strangest places
Places you never knew it could be
Some find it in the face of their children
Some find it in their lover's eyes
Who can deny the joy it brings
When you found that special thing
You're flying without wings
Some find it sharing every morning
Some in their solitary lives
You find it in the words of others
A simple line can make you laugh or cry
You find it in the deepest friendship
The kind you cherish all your life
And when you know how much that means
You've found that special thing
You're flying without wings
So impossible as they may seem
You've got to fight for every dream
'Cause who's to know
Which one you let go
Would have made you complete
Well, for me it's waking up beside you
To watch the sunrise on your face
To know that I can say I love you
In any given time or place It's little things that only I know
Those are the things that make you mine
And it's like flying without wings
'Cause you're my special thing
I'm flying without wings
And you're the place my life begins
And you'll be where it ends
I'm flying without wings
And that's the joy you bring
I'm flying without wings
First of all thanks for the lovely comments about my poem! *blushes* (((((((Sparkies)))))))) I'm really glad you liked it! I will try to write more soon - apparently my muse bunny is extremely hyper at the moment!

I really liked CM, so will try and answer these lovely insightful questions....
1) Yes. I liked the complexity of the plot - I think that twists like these are regretfully quite fairly rare in SG. It does mean that eps like these stand out though!
2) I liked the fact that the enemy was a goa'uld - I think their practical disappearance after S8 was just not plausible! It's good to know their still as bad as ever!
3) *small brain goes into overload* ...Um I'm not really sure what you meant...
4) I don't think she suspected him most, especially not initially. But his behaviour was VERY suspicious, and in my opinion the factors did all point to him. It was a difficult desicion for lovely Lizzy to make, and one I'll bet she tortured herself about afterwards, but if it really had been him then her course of action could have saved hundreds of lives... It is a bit of a grey area... That's why I love it!
5) No, I think Liz is trained to be objective and analytical and I can't really think of any example when she has decided on a course of action based on her feelings. To me she has always seemed like a great leader, one that always considers every possible outcome before acting. But remember, she is human, so if she ever did act on emotion then it's only natural. Plus, our emotions are what define us!
6) Hmmm.... I think that they would have got in trouble if they had actually shown torture (or its effects)! Also it was a kind of "all turned out alright in the end" kind of thing with that ep - what are people's thoughts on that? But what I do like about this ep was even though the ending was a tad on the convenient side they still added in the ethical issue - what if we really HAD tortured him - which I think was needed. As for the audience... Well Stargate has really always been a kind of fluffy show in my opinion (apart from the very first ep), especially when you compare it to darker shows like Firefly and Dr Who. The audience def wouldn't have liked the torture, and TPTB didn't want to endanger the show. I am happy that they're taking more risks though - that's needed!
7) Not really, but then I usually work out stuff like that anyway! I'll often find myself screaming at the screen "it's him/her! Can't you see....". But he wasn't the only suspect, so it wasn't as if I worked out the whole thing!
8) Hmm... as it was a fast-paced plot I think any extra sparky moments would have slowed it down. I really liked what they did at the end!
9) As a supporter of living wills and voluntary euthanasia I really liked how this plotline was handled - with it ending up with everyone honouring Charan's wishes, as it should be. In my opinion, in today's world people are all too quick to make other's desicions for them. Also I liked that this ep had a subplot - if the whole thing was the main plot it would have been heavy going and boring.
10) I think with the exploration eps there is more danger of repeating SG-1 plotlines. I really like the expedition plotlines as initially that was what SGA was supposed to be about. It was something fresh and different. Now though, I feel the writers have gone back to the exploration plotlines, which I find annoying slightly.
11) I didn't even realise that CB was the sparky writer! I shall watch the ep again and report back...
12) Well, being practised in watching similar things with complicated plotlines (and writing them) I enjoyed working it out - it was a challenge though, which was nice!
*phew* Right, now I'm going to give my brain a rest! Great questions though! And for everyone else who has posted great analytical comments on CM then great work! I really enjoyed reading them
may I just say how alternate ego's and my Big bang story is going to be totally awesome? I hope we'll finish it on time, but in case we don't... it's still going to be great!
Doesn't Sparky have it's own section this time? How cool is that?
I will answer the Q's later. For now here's my "C" wall. It's not Sparky but this one kinda made itself. I may do a Sparky C later. Now I'm off to finish D.

Very appropriate for John as that's one of the first things he had to overcome when he came to Pegasus. Nice...

Yes, yes, 100 times yes, to Laura! If they wanted to do a love story in the background, she would have worked so much better for me than Katie Brown did. I'm not sure if they decided not to use her anymore or if she got other jobs and wasn't available (I know I've seen her in quite a few things); either way it's too bad.
I loved how so many things happened, yet the plot didn't get lost anywhere, everyone was completely in character, everyone was doing something - something important, and we cared.
Absolutely. That's why I can watch this episode over and over again. It doesn't have a favorite scene that I'm waiting for, the whole thing is great!
