Hello, all! I'm feeling a bit under the weather today *headdesk* so sorry if my posts sound wonky.
Sanctuary
I know this is one of the Sheppard 'Kirking' episodes, but to be honest, I like Sanctuary. If I'm genuinely nervous about my ship, episodes like these make me nauseous, but I've never been worried about these type of moments in Atlantis--they never really posed a threat.
I think the reason I like Sanctuary is because of the different approaches all the characters take to Chaya and her situation. We do get to see some of the best of all the characters doing their jobs.
I love the 'villagers' but was a little baffled by the combination of the huts and the monk wear. It looked sorta Buddist and sorta Zulu.
Ah, the lovely Chaya. I liked the way Leo Varela played her--she was not simpering--she took everything in stride. There wasn't any begging with Chaya, or backwards behavior, you could tell she was on the level with Weir, basically, though she wore frillier clothes.
Rodney was at his jerkiest, smarmiest know-it-all-ness in this episode. I thought he was a leetle too jerky, if you ask me. After all the good stuff we've seen Rodney do in the last four episodes, this basically takes the character back to where he was willing to steal a ZPM from children. Chaya obviously posed no threat, though she was hiding something, so I really didn't see a need for him to treat her like she was one.
John: "Chaya's so pretty. And compared to her, Elizabeth's hair looks really goofy."
One of the things I wasn't a fan of was the sort of simpering way John behaved. He wasn't over the top with it (I don't think JF would ever let him get really down there) but he did act a little like a lovesick puppy, and the fact that others kept him out of the loop on their investigation of Chaya seems like a major breakdown in communication. They all knew he liked her, but that doesn't mean Elizabeth shouldn't have pulled him aside and told him what they'd found out.
Now that we know what an ascended Ancient looks like, we'll never mistake them again *cough*
Though this is a John/Chaya episode, we do get an Elizabeth/John moment, which I do like. For one thing, the moment is really coolly shot--from John's perspective, wheeling around with Elizabeth following him to the balcony. For a second, Elizabeth doesn't hesitate in giving him permission to follow Chaya (and essentially save her) but she's still worried about him.
Overall, I like how Elizabeth handles herself in this episode, toeing that line, again, between negotiating and protecting her own people. She makes an error in judgment in giving Rodney too much leeway, but I like that Chaya, as a leader herself, understands and forgives Elizabeth's position.
The biggest gripe about this episode is that it feels incomplete--almost like a bunch of scenes tied together without a core story. Too much of the little things, not enough of a center. The ending, for example, which is sweet, feels like it leaves you hanging.
Now, if you have the DVD set of S1, and you've not listened to the commentary for Sanctuary, I highly recommend you do, because it's the only one in all the episodes of Atlantis where Torri Higginson and Rachel Luttrell do the commentary together. (Torri walks in towards the very end of another episode--maybe 38 minutes? with Paul McGillion and Rachel, but it's way too short).
You're not going to get too much insight into the actual episode, but the commentary is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. You hear them chatting up their dogs, their love of soy chai, yoga, talking about how nice Leo Varela was and even doing a little bit of fangirling about Joe F. For example, when the opening credits start to roll, you hear Torri go "and...here's me...looking worried, worried, more worried" and then Rachel starts commenting about her wigs and how they hadn't quite gotten them right at this point. And it goes from there. Totally worth a listen.Visit SGArising.com to read our virtual continuation of the Atlantis series!

justhere, you are beyond evil. Remeber the Bigbang? Now be silent. That one must be 40 000 words long... and that's LOT of words.
Scanctuary... yep I spelled it like that on purpose - well it isn't one of my top episodes. Like Eri said, it's too much of everything without a solid story and I'm wondering what was the point of this - except telling us John is a womanizer - in my opinion he doesn't need to be Kirk to be cool. He is very cool without chasing alien chicks (and alien STDs). In my opinion Chaya is totally unecessary. Although the point of this episode was John running around like lovestruck fool, I also didn't feel the sparky is threatened.... because it feels sorta like an AU - one of the reasons is that so many characters feel like they are sent back to square one, Rodney in particular.
Who wrote this peice of cr*p?I'm not weird, I'm limited edition.

Yes, the Region 1 DVDs do have a commentary for that episode:
Also have:
Mission Directive - Sanctuary
Mission Directive - Before I Sleep
and behind the stargate: secrets revealed
Looks like I'll have to go search the commentary online
Personally NOT a fan of 'sanctuary', probably one of my least favorite epi ever...

To this day myformerhusband says that Chaya was the only woman John has really seemed to like, and he'd love it if they brought her back. I don't know what he's been smoking, but when his bruises heal I will ask him.
Altogether, I'm a bit meh about this one.

Meh is the word. The episode was lame and did your hubby miss the tons of not so subtle eye!sex John and Liz were having all over the screen? Men. Emotionally illiterate.
And that actress who played Chya.... it had to be a buxom babe from some cover, right? God forbid if John fell for woman's personality, wit, humor, her; and not the exterior.I'm not weird, I'm limited edition.

SR: I would agree with the McShep folks, that Rodney did act jealous. He was like, what the heck is he seeing in her?
