My thought was that he actually goes looking for her and finds her. Hence the fluff. Rather than Sheppard finding her and leading her back. Then, on the way back to the house, one of the creatures attacks them, injures him in the fight, and Alison is forced to help him back, care for him, and then stay with him (of course she's not forced to do this part) after it's all said and done.
