I also see it as Elizabeth really hates him because of how evil he is (Particullarly in Common Ground where he hurts John) but sees some charasmatic side to him. I wouldn't be either if it wasn't for my early bird of a toddler. But I'm quite happy this way, at least there's no fighting in the morning when we leave for daycare, he's usually up before I am.
