I own season six on dvd and in the 'Descent' commentary they actualy talk about how Davis got his first name. Davis wore this nametag that had said 'Major P. Davis'. Many fans started to call him Paul because of that. Colin Cunningham read that the fans were calling his character Paul so he asked TPTB to make it offical.
