A midline abdominal incision can be used to do a kidney transplant. In adults the transplanted kidney is placed in the iliac fossa through an oblique lower abdominal incision.

Well i'm a nurse who has worked in theatre and i think that whole kidney transplant story was ridiculous, even a medic like TJ supposedly is wouldn't be able to harvest and transplant a kidney with only scientists with limited medical knowledge as assistants, hell most fully qualified Doctors probably couldn't do it!!! You have to be a surgical specialist to even attempt it. It isn't as simple as the show portrayed and i would be surprised that a lone medic could accomplish it without dire consequences.

if they were trying for realism they really missed it there!!!

I second this comment as well. You need years of specialist training, not even a standard doctor would be confident in doing something like this. TJ has no chance, although I'm guessing they subvert that problem with the whole amanda perry hologram thing...

Emergencies require heroic effort. I'd give it a go, any volunteers??

You can't remove a kidney from the back because the ribs are in the way. You usually approach it from the sides because the kidneys are in the retroperitoneal space. If you look at photos of prisoners from other countries, you'll often see a diagonal scar on their sides.

As for placing the new kidney, it's usually in the abdomen, because of ease of access. I believe it's attached to an illiac artery and vein, or one of the branches from it.

Transplants usually require regular medication for years afterward to keep the recipient's body from rejecting the donor's organ. This medication basically amounts to an attack on the immune system, since the immune system is what rejects the organ. It's complicated as hell and I found it less believable that TJ did it as a field medic than a computer downloading someone's consciousness.

I'm not a doctor, but, man, TJ's no surgeon. There must have been some other big Ancient-y stuff at work aside from Perry's presence.

I still liked this episode, though.
