It's definitely something that can be explained away, I think the problem is they didn't. They could be setting it up as a future plot device I suppose though.

Even so, you'd think that there would be some more space between the people going through if 10 hours translates to 110 days.

The difference in time could be something other than linear (could even be random). It doesn't seem like it is a 1 day equals a month sort of thing but more like a day doesn't equal a day.

As I said though, They are quite a bit more advanced than now so they may have perfected solar energy quite a bit

Without concentration the upper limits on solar efficiency are very low (regardless of tech). There is absolutely no way a vehicle like that could be powered from the sun.

It is quite probably a random relationship between time passage on earth and old earth (in relation to individuals going back in time). I think we're thinking way too hard about this as none of us really has a clue how something like that rift would work (if it could work at all). This rift is so far out (scifi wise) everyone just needs to realize there is no explanation we could hope to understand.
