Torchwood's John Barrowman debuts his autobiography Anything Goes, and sings his way to Another Side

    By Ian Spelling

The latest edition of Doctor Who, which debuted in 2005, reinvented the venerable British SF program for a new generation. It proved so popular that its soon to enter its fourth season, and spinoff series Torchwood is a phenomenon unto itself. The show stars John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness, a Time Agent and former companion to the ninth Doctor (Chris Eccleston), who was introduced during Doctor Who's first season. These days, Harkness has his own team of alien fighters, which includes Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd), Owen (Burn Gorman), Gwen (Eve Myles) and Toshiko (Naoko Mori).

SCI FI Weekly recently caught up with Barrowman, who waxed enthusiastic about the Jan. 22 debut of the Torchwood: The Complete First Series DVD set, the Jan. 26 premiere of Torchwood's second season on BBC America and several other projects as well.

No need to get snippy about Mainstream U.S. audiances. I am part of that crowd and me and my wife both love the show and think Captain Jack is a great character. The problem lies with the overly religous people that cant see past thier bibles long enough to accept that there are other lifestyles out there besides their own. And those peole can be found all around the world not just the U.S.

              You're welcome, Red Phoenix.

Promo picture and synopsis for Episode 4 "Meat":
              Spoiler:
              "Whale meat again?
Quite an intriguing episode of the very fast-paced sci-fi drama. Somehow Gwen (Eve Myles) has managed to keep the reality of her special operations work a secret from her fiancé Rhys (Kai Owen). Not for much longer. Tonight Rhys discovers the truth about Torchwood and becomes part of the team as they investigate a mysterious alien-meat supply.

Meat? Yes, aliens are being sold for it, apparently. Very nasty. With Rhys in increasing danger, Gwen is under pressure as never before. Will Rhys go too far? Will Captain Jack (John Barrowman, who's never short of an innuendo or three) ask too much of him? And can Torchwood save the alien from being used as cheap meat?"

Synopsis AND SHORT REVIEW of Ep 4 by RadioTimes
              Spoiler:
              "Episode 4/13 Meat

Gwen's fiancé Rhys finally discovers what her special ops work really involves - and he wants in. As the newly bolstered Torchwood team investigate a mysterious alien meat supply, Gwen finds herself under pressure as never before. Rhys is in increasing danger. Has Jack asked too much of him? And can they save an alien being from ending up as someone's dinner?"

"RT Choice (Mark Braxton, 6 February 2008)
The human dimension of tonight's tale[…] gets another big tick in the series' plus column, with Eve Myles (Gwen) and Kai Owen (her fiancé Rhys) cutely conveying True Lies-style deceptions and repercussions.
Rather less successful is the sci-fi component[…] A shame: buried beneath the plotline is a thoughtful comment on our carnivorous ways.
A mixed grill of an episode, then. And, presiding over it all, Cap'n Jack (John Barrowman) is again let loose on innuendos that would embarrass the cast of Carry On. The hussy. "

Article from icWales: "Captain Jack and friends top BBC2 ratings"

In its first week on the terrestrial channel, 4.2m people watched John Barrowman’s team of alien investigators see off a threat from Buffy star James Masters’ rogue time agent. ...

Overnight figures for episodes two and three show the adult-themed sci-fi drama is holding on to its 14 per cent audience share pulling in 3.4m and 3.2m viewers before the number of people who record it to watch later are added. ...

A source said: “The average for the slot on BBC2 is 2.8 million. Heroes averaged 2.3m so it’s doing incredibly well.” ...

Insiders at BBC Wales’ Llandaff headquarters, where the show is produced, are pleased with the figures and are already turning their minds to consider a third series.

Los Angeles Times has interview with RT Davies. He talks mostly about Dr Who, but there are bits about Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures, too.

                            Spoiler:
"...If Davies regrets anything about the first season of "Torchwood," it's how fractured the dynamic among the agents got, he said. "After working on 'Doctor Who' for three years, I think we were desperate to explore adult material," Davies explains. "I think we all interpreted 'adult' as backstabbing, angst, treachery and betrayal." If the second season gets any reboot, Davies said, it's that they'll get along better.

It will help that in the season opener, they bonded in hatred over Capt. John Hart, a time agent who shares a complicated and passionate history with Jack. Much has been made of "Torchwood's" similarity to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which gives a seemingly layered significance to the casting of James Marsters, "Buffy's" Spike, in the role of Capt. John. But Davies said the choice was just a happy coincidence. He'd given up on finding a British actor to play the role and had temporarily scrapped the character when out of the blue Marsters' agent got in touch. Still, Sunnydale-starved viewers may have felt that they got a shout-out when Marsters, in a costume half Adam Ant and half Janet Jackson circa "Rhythm Nation," ended his first scene with the line "I'm thirsty." It's a recurring guest spot..."
