Stargate Universe Beats Snooki … On New Social Network TV Charts

It's winning ... socially
It may have been cancelled by its American channel, but according to a new tracking service called Trendrr, Syfy’s “Stargate Universe†conquered the cable television galaxy last week. At least when it comes to people tweeting, liking and checking in about it on social networks. The CW’s “Supernatural†won the social week among broadcast shows.
How is this measured? A spokesperson from Trendrr explained it this way:
Using data gleaned from public profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Miso and Get Glue- Trendrr is ranking the volume of buzz and social actions (check-ins, tweets, posts) for terms associated with TV shows- a top ten for cable and broadcast.
Variety was the them for cable listings. Look at the remaining Top 5:
2. Jersey Shore
3. Conan
4. Piers Morgan Tonight
5. Teen Mom 2
All buzz-worthy shows, for sure … but other than MTV having two on the list, it is a wide-range of formats and subject. How about broadcast? Not as much variety.
2. The Office
3. NCIS: Los Angeles
4. 2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament
5. American Idol
The Top 3 are scripted dramas — there are 5 in the broadcast Top 10 overall. That, obviously, changes when reality contest shows getting closer to a winner. But scripted shows clearly do cause a buzz.
It will be interesting to see this list grow and become more nuanced. For instance, it’s natural to wonder how these numbers change with demographics. For 25 and under, would Jersey Shore move to the top? (Or, say, when it’s actually airing new shows?) Will this new kind of rating start to change networks’ minds about certain shows? If there’s a lot of social buzz about a show, does that overcome low ratings? Who knows.
But it’s clear, at least by one measure, Stargate Universe is going out with a social supersonic boom.
