Aftermath Part Three:

“Stay there.” John said firmly before Teyla could even form a sentence.

Teyla did as he bade her, though she was not happy about it. If it were not for the possibility that going up there herself would add to the likelihood of the room or staircase collapsing, she would have ignored his order.

His order. He was alive. Teyla felt the relief seeping through her like a warm drug rushing through her system, and she realised that until she’d heard his voice she’d been feeling almost numb with fear.

John was gone for almost five minutes – Teyla was counting in her head – and returned just as Teyla was rethinking her plan to stay put. Teyla heard him coughing again, and then laboured breathing.

“Teyla, you still – cough – there?”

“I am here John,” she called up the stairs. “The medical team are here.” She looked over her shoulder at the assembled team – there were five of them, and they had a stretcher with them.

“I’ve got Radek – he’s unconscious, and I think he’s broken his leg,” called down John.

“I’ll go up,” said Dr Forrester, stepping forward.

Teyla was suddenly filled with an insane kind of petulant jealousy that he was allowed up while she was not, but she knew that what she felt was stupid, and just nodded.

Lorne nodded as well. “Dr Forrester’s coming up,” he called up the stairs to John. He clapped the doctor on the back as he climbed the slightly rocking stairs. Teyla and Lorne felt the steps shuddering and both climbed down them to the bottom, Teyla very reluctantly.

The smoke was dissipating, but was still too thick for Teyla to see anything that was happening at the top of the stairs. She could hear the soft rumble of John’s voice though, and leant back against the wall, allowing her relief to wash over her. Thank the Ancestors… now she just needed to know that Radek would be alright, and that they would rescue Rodney safely…

Fear twisted in Teyla’s stomach again at the thought of the danger her friends were in, but even in that moment she felt that it was nothing compared to the fear she’d felt for John.

Teyla pushed the thought aside as the smoke shifted some more, and a figure appeared at the top of the stairs again, descending slowly. Teyla recognised his gait immediately and stood up straight.

“Get the stretcher up there, but be careful on the stairs,” John told the medical team as he reached the bottom of the steps. He looked a little wobbly to Teyla, but she guessed that that could be the instability of the staircase.

He was pale, and had dust all over him, and was grimy from the smoke, but other than that – he was fine. She noted that his hair was still styled perfectly, and made a mental note to tease him mercilessly about it later.

The medical team started forward, heading past John, and he turned to face Teyla and Lorne. Teyla gasped.

John was, in fact, not unscathed by the explosion. His right eye was puffy and bloodshot, and his cheek and neck were covered in blood that was pouring from a gash on his temple.

It must be a glare coming from my computer screen.

I think you will find that in everyday, common speech, most people would refer to a team of people using 'are' instead of the correct form of the verb 'to be', 'is'. This is because people do not think through their grammar in great detail as they speak, especially in stressful situations such as the one described in 'Aftermath'. As a writer, I pride myself on the believability of my dialogue, and so made the informed decision to go with 'are' instead of 'is'.

So there.
