14x11 "Lost and Found" (Part 2 of 2)
Synopsis: SG-1 rushes into the galactic void in a last-ditch attempt to contact the lost Furling race, finding themselves trapped light-years from rescue.
                            Spoiler:
((30 second recap of "Coventry" and "Shadows of the Past"))

Colonel Samantha Carter is rushing down the halls of the ISGC in full combat gear, shouting for people to get out of her way and waving with her P90. Technicians and service men pull out of the way as she barrels down the corridor, swinging around a bend and taking the stairs to the control room two at a time. She asks the nearest officer where Dr. Talbot is, and upon learning that she is upstairs, leaps up to the briefing room, pleased to see her team and the commander waiting.

Talbot explains that Col. Via Sanders has the DSC-304 Aurora waiting in orbit, ready to leave as soon as SG-1 is prepared to head out. Pulling out a tablet computer, Daniel brings up the hyperspace coordinates they received from the files on the Furlings found at Heliopolis ("Shadows of the Past"). He's determined, with the help of the people in the control room, that their target area is actually farther than anyone from Earth has ever traveled. And unfortunately, getting there will take time; even at full power, the Aurora's hyperdrive won't be able to shorten the trip to any less than a month each way.

Thinking, Vala suggests taking one of their ZPMs to boost the 304's engines, but Carter doesn't know if that's such a good idea. With the Der'kal fleet only a few jumps from Earth itself, depleting their available power could turn disastrous. Talbot agrees, adding that the United Nations is in the process of allocating more funds to experimental, Earth-based power generators, in an effort to alleviate their reliance on ZPMs. But until that goes through completely, they'll need every one of the Ancient modules.

About an hour later, the team is aboard the Aurora, and the ship is preparing to depart. Mitchell makes a point to approach Sanders and thank her for offering the use of her ship, saying she didn't have to do this; it seems that Via is always chasing around the galaxy after SG-1, and he wants to apologize for dragging her out of the way like that. But Sanders doesn't mind, and just tells him to go join the rest of his team. After all, they have a job to do, and she intends to make sure they do it well.

Downstairs in the mess hall, Carter is going over what they know about their destination with Vala and Daniel; it's far outside the Local Group, and they won't have the luxury of instant communication with the Alliance, nor its reinforcements. Mitchell enters just as she brings up a second problem; with them being gone for a total of two weeks, they'll have no idea what's going on in the Milky Way. If Earth is attacked or a world like Dakara or Chulak falls to the Der'kal, they won't know about it until they re-enter the galaxy, and then they may end walking into a trap. Both Daniel and Vala are worried that something might happen, but Cameron says that what happens will happen anyway, regardless of their being here or not.

With their preparations complete, Colonel Sanders radios the ISGC and tells Dr. Talbot that she'll be back with her team in a few weeks, and the latter wishes the former good-luck and good-hunting. That taken care of, the commander cuts the link and orders her ship taken out of orbit. The Aurora slowly glides away from Earth, passing by the other ships in orbit, and jumps into hyperspace for the galactic void.

A series of passing scenes illustrates the passage of time, with Mitchell and Vala playing cards at one point (Vala obviously cheating). Daniel seems to spend most of the time with his new tablet, accessing parts of the Asgard database that have been downloaded to it. Carter, meanwhile, spends the trip on the bridge, talking and catching up with Colonel Sanders, who herself seems to fully unwind and relax around her fellow female commander. The trip, were it not in such an odd situation, could almost appear to be a vacation for the tired team, but they are all keenly aware of the pressure mounting back home for them to find something of value out here.

On Earth itself, the ISGC is continuing as normal, with regular traffic passing through from all corners of the galaxy. Dr. Talbot looks utterly bored, sitting in the control room and writing poetry of all things in a notebook. As she tries to find the right word for her next line, the stargate suddenly comes online, and the iris slides shut at once. Talbot asks if they know who's coming through, and her question is answered when the monitor's flip on and the face of Freya appears onscreen. Anise's former host (now apparently back to work for the Tok'ra) says they've just intercepted a critical transmission from a passing Der'kal vessel, and it's not good.

When Talbot presses her on the issue, Freya explains that the aliens have also somehow discovered the coordinates SG-1 did, and are assembling a strike force to investigate as they speak. With their faster hyperdrives, they should be able to catch up with the Aurora just in time to meet it at the coordinates... giving neither side any time to prepare for battle. Talbot, immediately worried, asks if the Tok'ra have a figure on how many ships the team will be facing, and Freya's face darkens as she gives the answer; three cruisers, more if the Der'kal are afraid of meeting any sort of resistance... and a single one or two would be enough to destroy a DSC-304.

In hyperspace, it's been a long month traveling out of the Milky Way, and Vala has just about to lose it with the waiting. As she prepares to storm the bridge, Mitchell catches her and informs her that they should be reverting to sublight any minute now. Relieved, she un-tenses at once and follows Cameron into the control station, where Sanders, Carter, and Daniel are all anxiously awaiting the drop-out. When the computer says they've arrived exactly where they need to be, Sanders gives the order and the hyperspace tunnel flashes out of existence.

In deep space, a window opens and the Aurora flashes out, cruising to a stop far, far from its home. In fact, you can't even see the Milky Way from here, it has faded so far into the distance. On the bridge, the team is staring, shocked, out the window at something we cannot see. Finally, Vala asks if "that's what we came all this way for," to which Daniel replies that he's not entirely sure. The camera pans to show the window, and what lies beyond it... what would appear to be over a hundred Furling warships of varying sizes, all floating motionless in space. They all sit at odd angles, and some of them appear to have been damaged or broken apart over time. It doesn't look like anything living remains in the area.

One of the ship's crew runs a scan on the nearest ships and reports that he doesn't read any life signs or energy signatures. Carter and Daniel exchange confused looks; they were under the impression the message they decrypted was sent more recently, indicating living Furlings, but this is hardly promising.

Sanders recommends beaming over to investigate, an idea Mitchell echoes. The 304 commander tells SG-1 to be careful and prepares to beam them out, but just before she taps in the command, an alarm blares; a hyperspace window has been detected! No one has time to react before the window ejects a trio of Der'kal cruisers into the area, several kilometers behind the Aurora itself. Mitchell hopefully points out that the aliens may not see them, but any chance of that being the case quickly vanishes when energy bursts begin slamming into the rear shields. Not knowing how the enemy knew where they were, but also realizing they need to get moving, Sanders orders the ship to come about and arm weapons.

On the bridge of the lead Der'kal vessel, the commander Vur'naa scowls as his crew identifies the Aurora. Surprised but not entirely shocked to see the Tau'ri here, of all places, he tells his two escort cruisers to engage, but has his own ship brought ever-closer to the mass of Furling warships nearby. That is the prize here, and no hunk of metal full of petulant humans was going to stand in his way...

Meanwhile, SG-1 finds themselves suddenly in the way as the 304 is pelted with emerald energy blasts, spinning around to attack the aft section of the nearest Der'kal vessel. Carter, sliding into one of the sensor terminals, shouts that one of the enemy ships is moving towards the Furling fleet, and Mitchell jumps to his feet at once. He glances at Sanders, asking for permission to scramble jumpers and 302s, and upon receiving it rushes from the room for the hanger bay. Daniel and Vala both move off to the side to try and be as unobtrusive on the crew as possible, though it's clear they feel out of place.

As the Aurora's Asgard energy weapons go to work hammering at the Der'kal's shields, hundreds of alien fighters drop from their berths and rush to strike a killing blow to the Earth battleship. In perfect unison, the railgun defense grids open fire on them, vaporizing some of the attackers but unable to stop the unending stream of starfighters from raking at the Aurora's defenses.

A moment later, the first of the F-302s shoot from the 304 itself. In the hanger bay, Mitchell leaps into one of the remaining craft and powers it up, patching into the squadron's radio link and telling them to head straight for the enemy cruisers; the fighters they can take out later, but right now the big ships are the priority. He gets his fighter into the air, following a trio of puddle jumpers, and immediately contacts Sam and the others on the bridge, asking how things are going. In the midst of a shake that nearly throws Daniel to the floor, Carter replies that their shields are down twenty percent, but so far they're doing okay, a sentiment proven a moment later as the Asgard beams slice through to the closest enemy cruiser's hull, damaging but not destroying it.

On Earth, Dr. Talbot is attempting to get in contact with Teal'c on Chulak, hoping to ask him if he can dispatch any ships out far enough to make contact with SG-1. The human fleet is too tied up in combat operations right now, and the Tok'ra don't have enough vessels to spare one. As she waits for the stargate to dial and connect, the doctor stares up at the ceiling, muttering that she hopes the team is going to stay alive long enough for her to pull something off.

One of the Der'kal cruises, meanwhile, is in the process of exploding as the F-302 squadron slams it with a series of missiles, and a few well-placed drones from a jumper finally sends it into a fireball. With that taken care of, the fighters and the Aurora turn their attention to the second, fully-powered and undamaged warship. But on the bridge, things look bad; the shields are down to 40 percent and dropping, and the third cruiser (still hovering near the Furling fleet) has opened fire again, too. Colonel Sanders orders power transferred from the hyperdrive to the forward shields, but just as the energy transmission begins, one of the enemy fighters manages to slide through the shields and slams into the rear of the ship, causing a massive explosion. The shield flickers briefly, and the enemy cruisers manage to send several plasma bursts through the failing barrier, scoring direct hits on the hull.

                              (More of "Lost and Found.")

                              Spoiler:
On the bridge, Sanders demands to know what happened as hull breach alarms blare in the background. Carter's sensor terminal goes dead as the primary system is knocked out, and Vala jumps out of the way to avoid an electrical fire. One of the technicians shouts that they've lost shields completely, and a series of BOOM!s rock the vessel. Not caring as to the "how" at the moment, Sanders gives the order to recall the fighters and break off the attack. As the 302s and jumpers make emergency landings in the hanger bays (some getting blown to bits on the approach), Daniel asks where, exactly, they intend to go to escape the fight. As more and more energy blasts rain down on them, Carter has an idea; they can take the ship inside the mass of Furling vessels. That will form a shell preventing the Der'kal from firing on them, and hopefully also give them the time they need to recharge the shields and repair any severe damage.

Sanders isn't too sure about this plan, but not seeing any alternative, gives the okay. The Aurora pulls a dizzying spin and launches away towards the closest jumble of Furling ships, flying to the left and right as needed to dodge incoming attacks. As the 304 dives into the mass of Furling vessels, the Der'kal continue firing, but their attacks slam into the floating wreckage instead, damaging them but not managing to break through to the human craft.

On his ship, Vur'naa is unsurprisingly annoyed by the Tau'ri ship's escape. He demands his crew triangulate the 304's position so they can attack, but one of his warriors insists the material of the Furling ships is causing their sensors to go somewhat haywire; they can't see the Aurora in all that mess. Annoyed, Vur'naa unholsters his pistol and calmly sends a plasma blast into the warrior's arm, warning that he would prefer a more encouraging answer next time. But he is not unreasonable, and accepts that, for now, the humans are beyond their reach.

Turning to the nearest monitor, the alien commander hails his remaining escort, and the face of another Der'kal appears onscreen. Vur'naa tells him to begins patrolling the outer edges of the Furling fleet, and to dispatch all his fighters inside to search and engage the Aurora. Reinforcements will have left soon after them, and once they have more ships, they can simply blast the humans out of hiding. One way or another, he plans on getting what he wants.

Inside the floating wreckage, the 304 is winding its way past ship after ship, putting as much distance as possible between itself and the Der'kal. Helping a slightly-injured Vala to her feet, Daniel asks if they're safe for the time being. Sanders thinks they've managed to stave off "imminent death" for now, but says there's no way they can take another beating like that. Scans indicate the shield generator is completely dead, and the short-range sensors were blown off in the attack; they're flying (virtually) blind.

In the hanger bay, Mitchell is jumping out of his F-302, staring in shock at a nearby fighter that has lost a wing. Overall, six of their eighteen F-302s were destroyed in the dogfighting, and a single puddle jumper was destroyed as it attempted to score a hit on one of the surviving Der'kal cruisers. He taps his radio and gives Sanders a status report on their situation, then asks how the ship's doing. Carter takes over and replies that things aren't looking good, but they're trying to beam spare parts into place on the outside of the ship to close up hull breaches. If that works, the damaged areas will be pressurized and they can get to work rerouting power to essential systems. Either way, though, it'll be tough.

As the Aurora continues meandering its way through the ruins of the Furling fleet, the longer-ranged sensors detect several squadrons of Der'kal fighters and gunships entering the area from the cruisers. Sanders sighs, relieved they at least know what's coming, then does a double-take as all the fighters drop off the radar. For a moment, she's confused, but Carter quickly dispels any notions of their miraculous destruction by reminding everyone that the short-range radar is out; they simply passed out of the long-range's detection radius and entered into the blind zone. Which means they could strike at any time, and they'd never see it coming.

On the outskirts of the wrecked fleet, Vur'naa is growing impatient. They are still incapable of scanning through the hulls of the Furling ships, and their fighters can only search so much space at one time... and the armada before them takes up quite a bit of room. Hoping to catch them at length if not immediately, he turns to one of his warriors and demands the ship's hyperdrive interdictor be made ready; with it active, the humans won't be able to jump away and flee. With that done, Vur'naa again turns to the sensor display, searching the empty space ahead for some sign of his least-favorite group of Tau'ri.

Deep within the mass of ancient hulks, Carter has relocated to one of the ship's labs, and is busily attempting to access the still-active subspace communications grid connecting the Furling vessels. Sitting nearby, Daniel asks why, of all systems, a simple radio link would still be maintained when things far more essential, such as shields, engines, or weapons, have all been powered down. Sam replies that she has no idea, but guesses that if they knew why, they'd also know where the Furling crews disappeared to.

Suddenly, she gives a gasp of delight; she's managed to slice into the network with a slight modification to the ship's interior radio. Daniel immediately radios Mitchell and Vala, telling them to get down here, then listens in as Sam begins trying to sift through all the interference in the network. She explains that she's trying to get into the data concerning official logs, but the files have been corrupted after millions of years. Maybe if they could get a direct, physical link... but as long as it's a wireless transmission, they'll be problems. From the bridge, Sanders points out that there are dozens of ships around they could beam onto, but Carter says they'd need the flagship; it's what would have the central computer bank. Coming down the elevator, Mitchell says they could just navigate over to the flagship, if only they could figure out which one it was. Carter promises to try and triangulate the position of it from the signals she's getting, but admits with all the interference and cross-communication, she doubts it will happen anytime soon.

Just as Daniel opens his mouth to suggest something else, Sanders shouts over the radio for everyone to hold on. The Aurora suddenly brakes and swerves right, ducking under one of the Furling ships (this one looks to have broken into several sections) and into a thick cloud of debris, decelerating at once. On the bridge, Sanders orders the sublight engines cut and all non-essential systems powered down immediately. From the lab, Carter asks what in the world just happened, and the ship's commander answers that someone just spotted a squadron of enemy fighters coming around a ship in the distance; they needed to get out of visual and sensory sight ASAP, and that was the only way to do it.

Outside, over a dozen Der'kal starfighters, accompanies by a single gunship, are slowly making their way around the area. Nearby the drifting junk pile that hides the Aurora can be seen, but the 304 itself is almost invisible. Inside the ship, the crew is holding their breath, waiting and unable to see if they've been spotted. But the fighters seem to have missed them, and quickly move on their way. Everyone on the bridge breathes a sigh of relief, and one of the crew begins re-powering the primary systems. Out of the corner of her eye, Sanders notices the control panels flashing back to life, and shouts to stop, but it's too late; one of the Der'kal pilots suddenly sees the 304 pop into existence on his radar, pinpointed by the engines coming online, and spins his fighter around to attack. The others in the squadron quickly follow suit, and the human vessel's position is relayed to the outer squadrons, as well.

The Aurora rockets out of its hiding place, smashing debris in every direction, furiously trying to outdistance the fighters. Inside, Colonel Sanders is radiating frustration, but she's at least attempting to stay calm and cool, not even bothering to punish the officer who messed up in this case, just telling everyone to focus. She taps her radio and fills SG-1 in on things, and asks them to get up there so she can have them working alongside the crew.

As the ship weaves in and out of the massive floating graveyard, the Der'kal fighters pull within firing range and open up on the fleeing vessel. The 304's unshielded rear is pounded with green plasma, but the railguns return with as much ferocity, blasting one starfighter to bits and keeping the others from getting too close.

In one of the lower hallways, SG-1 is jogging down towards the bridge when Carter suddenly hears a beep. She pulls out her tablet and notices the signal on the Furling communications network is growing stronger, indicating they're approaching the flagship of the doomed fleet. Carter asks Sanders to slow down and try to get a lock, but the commander refuses, not with enemy fighters ripping into the area around the engines and hyperdrive. It's just too risky to begin methodically trying to find a single ship. Desperate, Carter offers to take a jumper out then, and Sanders relents, though she mutters she'd rather have them in the bridge. Turning to the others, Sam herds her team down a side hallway, making haste to the F-302 bay.

On the outskirts of the fleet, the two Der'kal cruisers are still pummeling away at the derelict ships, having broken several apart already. In the background, a hyperspace window opens, and three more cruisers arrive, this time escorted by two frigates apiece (about 3/4 the size of a cruiser, these are becoming a more-common sight as the Der'kal are stretched thinner across the galaxy). They immediately contact Vur'naa and demand to know what he has discovered... and why he is destroying these ancient warships. The head alien replies that the Tau'ri are here, in the vessel that has caused them the most trouble thus far, and he believes the team known as "SG-1" is aboard. The destruction of a few Furling ships, he argues, is well-worth the death of that notorious foursome. With that settled, he assigns the newcomers to take up bombardment positions themselves, hoping that soon he will succeed.

Meanwhile, the Aurora's backside takes a serious blow when one of the sublight engines goes offline from too much damage. Sanders tells Carter (she and SG-1 running into and powering up a puddle jumper) to get going now before they get trapped, and the second Colonel obliges. The small Ancient gateship shoots out of the bay, cloaking and diving into the nearby debris. The 304, on the other hand, is swarmed by Der'kal fighters, now three squadrons full, and the railguns are simply incapable of batting them all off. Things don't look good in the slightest.

                                (End of "Lost and Found.")

                                Spoiler:
Flying away as fast as they can, SG-1 is torn; Mitchell wants to return to the ship with every fiber of his being, unbelieving they're going to abandon Sanders and her crew. Carter, though, is adamant that finding out why this fleet is here is the objective, and when Cameron protests more, she uncharacteristically orders him to be silent. With tears in her eyes, she reminds him that Via is a good friend of hers, and she remembers all the Colonel has done to them, from saving their lives above Chulak to helping them protect Ankgor to rescuing Jack O'Neill ("Amazing Grace," "Rogues, Part 2," and "Total War," respectively). This isn't easy to do, but it's what they must.

As Carter brings them in towards the ship she believes is the one they want, she looks at Daniel and asks him if the logs they uncovered revealed anything particularly useful ("Shadows of the Past"). He shakes his head, but says that these warships were state-of-the-art for their time... if they can, it might be wise to try and take a few with them for the Alliance. That said, with the Der'kal here, that could be harder said than done.

The jumper slows as it approaches the massive Furling flagship, and Carter manages to locate the bridge from outside (having been on such a ship before, in "The Relic"). She uses the gateship's interface to connect with the derelict hulk and opens the closest landing bay, lowering the small Ancient craft to the floor and re-sealing the chamber. One by one, SG-1 exits, weapons at the ready, but no one's here. Satisfied that they're alone, Carter leads her team out the door and down the hallway to the bridge.

Farther away, the Aurora is showing signs of serious structural damage; the outer hull is breaking up in places, and with the swarm of fighters hammering every opening, it won't hold much longer. On the bridge, Colonel Sanders grits her teeth to news that the sublight engines are nearing their last legs, and the first F-302 bay has just been breached, venting personnel and equipment alike. Not seeing any other choice, Sanders orders all crew members to abandon their stations and head for the center of the ship, down near Engineering. It will compromise their efficiency, but lives are the priority here.

Just as they're managing to put some distance between themselves and the fighters, though, a massive explosion lights up the area; the Der'kal outside have blasted through to them! A barrage of emerald plasma bolts stream through the opening, some narrowly missing the 304 as it passes by, and one scoring a direct hit just ahead of the bridge, ripping open a massive section to raw space. As she is throws from her chair by the blow, Sanders shouts to transfer all power from anywhere to the sublights. They need to get out of here, and if they can't do it now, it won't really matter.

On the Furling ship, Carter and SG-1 have reached the bridge. There's almost no life support going, but the ship's sealed state has left enough air to breathe until the systems are restarted. As Sam interfaces and gets to work, Daniel looks out the front window at all the ships floating around. He wonders aloud what could have caused the Furling to abandon all this, a question Vala echoes from nearby, looking at a display screen. When Carter finally gets the power back, the screen immediately lights up with the face of the Furling Admiral of the fleet!

The Admiral appears to be entering his final log, and Daniel tries to translate from Furling to English as fast as he can; the fleet was attacked by an armada of unknown, alien ships. When the Furlings found themselves unable to beat them all off, their vessels being boarded and all the information anyone could ever want on the Milky Way in their databanks, the Admiral did the only thing he could think of... he vented every last ship in the fleet of atmosphere and linked them all to his flagship. Even with the last of his race dying around him, he took comfort in the fact that the Furlings had redeemed themselves for their crimes. They would save the galaxy from these vicious aliens, and they would go down in history as the people who sacrificed themselves for the good of all life. With that, he told the computer to jump the linked-fleet to a random destination via hyperspace and then shut down all systems. The thousands of Der'kal troops onboard would perish along with the Furlings, and their masters would never be able to find the lost ships. They would be safe...

The log cuts out then, no doubt moments before the Admiral's own suffocation, and SG-1 stands in silence, unable to comprehend that the Furlings, similar to the Asgard and Ancients, essentially sacrificed their entire race to preserve the future. Is that what it takes to be a member of the Alliance, Vala asks softly, and if so, can the humans, Jaffa, and Tok'ra ever hope to live up people such as these? That's when Carter remembers what they came for; the logs! She quickly downloads what she needs to her tablet, then starts to unplug it... but remembers something at the last second. The Admiral linked all these ships to the flagship, so if that's true, she should be able to control them all from here. She can use the entire armada! Tossing her tablet to Daniel, she sprints to the primary control console and starts typing, more excited than she's been in years.

Finally, on the other side of the wreckage, the Aurora is done. It's engines disabled, it floats between two Der'kal cruisers that have penetrated the ruins and all the fighters that were chasing it. On the bridge, Sanders grimly stands before a video transmission of Vur'naa, who looks quite pleased with himself for finally catching the elusive Tau'ri vessel. He taunts the human commander, reminding her that he was there to see the utter destruction of the Alliance fleet over P9X-335 ("Shatterpoint"), and he so relishes this opportunity to end his own littler personal sidequest to finish the job (the Aurora being the sole vessel to escape the battle). Just then, though, the other cruiser with him... explodes. For a moment, Vur'naa cannot understand what happened, but then he sees.

The Furling ships around that have yet to be destroyed are suddenly coming to life, turning and firing on the Der'kal, using their combined fire to rip though their shields quickly and efficiently. From the flagship, which is pulling up beside the Aurora, Carter contacts Sanders and tells her to hold on; she's going to pull the 304 through hyperspace. Using the other Furling ships to distract Vur'naa and his forces, and with relief seeing the interdictor has been disabled, Sam opens a hyperspace window and jumps inside, taking the Earth vessel with her.

A week later, the team and Colonel Sanders are being debriefed by Dr. Talbot, who is shocked to learn of all that transpired out in the galactic void. She especially praises Carter for managing to bring back a Furling vessel, but admits she's somewhat disappointed that so many were left to be taken by the Der'kal. Sam only smiles, though, saying she very much doubts the aliens were able to recover any, since she rigged them all to self-destruct as soon as they were in hyperspace.

As they all stand up to carry on with their lives, Daniel in particular wants to decipher the logs they got, Talbot turns and asks Sam how the fleet sent a message back to Heliopolis at all if the Furlings were all dead. Carter replies that the last Admiral of the fleet programmed the central computer to monitor communications streaming from the Milky Way, even though they would be thousands of years old upon reaching the fleet; when it received confirmation that the galaxy was ready, the computer was to send the message.

Ironically, the trigger was the uprising on Earth that liberated it from the Goa'uld. Apparently, that was the key all along.

                                ((The End))
