((And now, the mid-season finale of Stargate: SG-1!))

    14x10 "Shadows of the Past"
Synopsis: When Daniel Jackson discovers a lost archive containing logs of a Furling fleet, a vast cache of information on the little-known race is revealed.
    Spoiler:
(30 second recap of "Requiem, Part 2" and "Shatterpoint)

Dr. Daniel Jackson is passed out sitting at his computer terminal, no doubt late into the night here in Colorado. Behind him, Samantha Carter is eating some blue jello from a cup, looking somewhat amused. After a moment, Jackson wakes up, his glasses askew, and yawns loudly. Carter can't surpress a laugh in time and Daniel jumps, startled.

Leaning over his shoulder, she asks what's got him up so late, and Daniel explains that the Nox just sent over some of the logs from old Heliopolis, before they rebuilt it for the Alliance. And according to these files, following the AI War that nearly ripped the group in two, the Furlings chose to leave the Milky Way forever, escaping in a mass exodus of people and equiptment. If these logs are correct, they finally have a chance to see what really happened after the disasterous AI War...

((Suddenly, the screen flashes brightly, and when the light fades, a Furling warship can be seen gliding effortless through space. In subtitles, "Millions of years ago" appears in subtitles.))

Inside the ship itself, dozens of living, breathing Furlings can be seen walking about, tending to various duties. They appear to resemble humans of about 6 feet in height, and do, in fact, have a thin layer of dark brown fur covering their bodies. Their bodies are largely humanesque, though they have only four fingers, and a large, flat bone plate stretches from above their mouths to their foreheads, with two slits for nostrils. Their uniformsare also fairly familiar, with dark green leggings, boots, armbands, and tops (for men, these are loose-fitting shirts that reveal chest muscles and shoulders. On women, they are more form-fitting).

The camera zooms back out of the warship, then down onto a different part of it... the bridge, or what would appear to be a bridge from its design. It looks larger than the equivilent on a Daedalus-class ship, not surprising considering a Furling vessel's immense size. Standing at the very bow, staring through a window, is a Furling in a more-formal appearing uniform, with his entire upper body covered save his forearms. This is Admiral Lagos, the Furling officer placed in charge of this ship.

One of his attendants approaches, telling him that the preparations are complete on their homeworld; the last refugee ship left minutes ago, and the planet is empty of all sentient life. Lagos acknowledges, saying he's sad that it has to be this way, but also realizing that, perhaps, it was inevitable. Every age must end, and this is simply the twilight of that of the Furlings. With one last glance out the window, he orders the "fleet" to make the final jump out of the Milky Way. And then it's revealed that it is, in fact, a fleet, as the camera's view shifts to reveal a massive grouping of over two dozen ships, split roughly in half between Furling warships and smaller Furling vessels. Then, as one, they open a hyperspace window and vanish into the darkness.

((In subtitles, just as the screen shifts to a view of a beautiful blue-green planet covered with cities (which can be seen even from orbit), the following appears: "Alteran-controlled Earth"))

Light-years away, on Earth, the capital of the Alteran sector of space, a crisis has emerged. Subspace relays controlled by the Furlings have suddenly gone dark, shutting down much of the Alliance's communications and sensory systems across the galaxy. As such, a massive section of the Milky Way is vulnerable to attack, and the Nox are already dispatching ships to reactivate the darkened relays at once. Still, this is a major problem, and all attempts to contact the Furlings have failed. Even their homeworld is no longer responding.

In Atlantis itself, nestled in a beautiful snow-filled valley and surrounded by massive towers stretching in all directions (it's winter here in Antarctica, at a cool temperature of 40 degrees Farenheight), the Alterans are becoming concerned. One of them, apparently the commander of the facility, orders the Furling homeworld dialed, and the Atlantis gate (surprisingly, a Milky Way-style one) dials up the correct address and locks, the wormhole forming as normal. A team of four Alterans, wearing clearly-designated offworld gear and carrying energy pistols, come down the stairs and walk calmy through the gate, their weapons rasied and at the ready.

After travelling through the wormhole, the four Alterans arrive on the Furling homeworld... and it is indeed beautiful. Buildings stretching high into the sky in an alien style adorn the immediate area, though they appear artistic and stunning in an odd, inhuman way. One of the newcomers pulls out a scanner and holds it to the sky... but it makes no noise whatsoever. She taps a tiny jewel just below her ear, implanted in her skin, and says that she's not getting any energy readins whatsoever. The Furling capital is devoid of all activity, and life signs are at an incredibly-low four; the Alterans and no one else.

Back in the Atlantis control room, the Alteran in charge looks concerned, immediately calling to a nearby technician to alert the High Council; they need to convene the major Alliance powers immediately. The Furlings seem to have vanished.

Meanwhile, the Furling fleet speeds through hyperspace, continuing on its journey out of the galaxy. On the flagship, Lagos is listening to status reports they recieved before jumping into hyperspace, going over every ship under his command. Five other such fleets are about to rondevous in the void between the Milky Way and Ida Galaxies, and they plan to then jump past the Asgard home systems to outside the Local Group. From there, they'll head outwards, in an attempt to find a new home where they can live out their days in peace, and not face the shame of fracturing the dlicate balance the Alterans and Nox had worked so hard to create.

As he reads, the First Officer approaches, bowing her head and making a strange hand gesture, which Lagos seems to interpret as a show of respect. The Admiral asks what it is the Officer wants, and she explains that sensors on their homeworld have detected a stargate activation, as well as Alteran life-signs. Lagos sighs; he knew it would not take long for the other races to notice their sudden departure, and now they will no doubt be attempting to reign them back in. But he has his orders from his leaders; to take this fleet, meet up with the others like it, and leave the galaxy. And that's what he intends to do, no matter who or what stands in his way.

Far, far away, a fleet of ancient forms of Alteran, Nox, and Asgard (notably less-advanced than the others) vessels orbit a small but pristine world. This is Heliopoilis as it was millions of years ago, long before humanity rediscovered it. A massive citadel resting on a cliff's edge houses the nerve center for the Alliance of this era, and numerous members of all three remaining races are going about their business inside. In the main chambers, six representatives sit debating the issue of the Furling disappearance, two people from each species. It's clear that the Asgard, however, are not considered to be true memebrs yet, and their two diplomats sit patiently while the Nox and Alterans debate how best to react.

(Last part of "Shadows of the Past," see previous post for start.)
      Spoiler:
Apparently, the revelation that the Furling homeworld has been emptied is of grave concern, especially with a major war so nearly over. It's hardly been a month since the rogue AI created by the Furlings was finally eliminated, but it's left the Alliance very, very weak. They can hardly afford to divide their forces even more in order to track down the missing race, but either way, they need to know what's going on. Finally, the Asgard chime in, pointing out that it's possible the Furlings feel ashamed of what they've done, and have decided to simply put it out of their minds... and their lives. It's not beyond their capabilities to transport their entire race on their fleet, it's surely massive enough, and then move it to another quadrant of space.

The Nox and Alterans see the point almost at once, and are embarrassed they themselves did not see such an obvious possibility. They recommend they try and make contact at once; the Furlings have no know that there is no shame in what they did, and that they will always be welcome amongst the Alliance. Now they just need to track them down, before it's too late to save them at all...

((Now the scene returns to the present day, with Dr. Jackson and Carter still looking over the lost logs from Heliopolis. Now, though, they are joined by Lt. Col. Mitchell, Vala, and Dr. Talbot, all of whom look very interested.))

Mitchell asks if he's understanding this right, and points out he was never good with history; basically, the Furlings decided that they were unworthy to be members of the Alliance and left the galaxy, abandoning the other races to escape what they percieved as shame. This caused some crisis as part of the galactic communications grid dependent on Furling control went dark, leading to the Alterans discovering what had happened and calling a meeting of the Alliance. Daniel nods, saying that that's how it's looking so far. What he still wants to know, however, is why this fleet that suposedly left was never found. The Alliance spent decades searching, but never discovered even a trace of it.

Regardless, he loads the next log, and starts reading anew...

((In the past, the scene shifts once more, now focusing again on the Furling fleet in hyperspace.))

One of the Furling officers reports that they're approaching the rondevous coordinates, and Admiral Lagos orders the fleet to revert to realspace at once. On his order, a hyperspace window opens and his cruiser glides out followed by the rest of his ships. As they come to a stop, a stunning sight is revealed; set against the backdrop of the Milky Way Galaxy, an armada of Furling vessels, mostly civilian ones, is organizing itself into a coherent group. Dozens of ships float in the vaccuum of space, each one carrying thousands and thousands of people, pushing the limits of the ships' capacities. It's a magnificent sight to behold.

The commander of the nearest flagship greets Lagos, immediately deferring to the Admiral's authority, and says that all seventy-nine ships are here now, with a combined total of roughly five million... all that remains of the Furling race following their near-extinction during the AI War. The other commanders have entered the first string of jump coordinates into their navigational systems, and they will begin heading for the cluster just beyond the Ida Galaxy as soon as he gives the word.

Before he does anything more, though, Lagos patches himself in to the entire fleet, and addresses his people in full; he acknowledges the great achievements of the Furling race, but also reminds them all of the terrible price the galaxy paid for their arrogance. Were it not for the timely intervention of the Alliance, with the wisdom of the Nox, the strength of the Alterans, and the ingenuity of the Asgard, it is highly unlikely that sentient life would have won the day. So now, they will find a new home for themselves, one where they can grow and prosper and one day return home as heroes, rather than the lowly imbiciles they appear to have become. With that, he orders the armada to head out, and the ships open their windows to depart.

On Heliopolis, the Alliance is tapping their entire comm. network in an attempt to broadcast a signal far enough for the Furlings to recieve. That, however, is slow going, as they have no idea which direction the exodus armada is headed in, nor how far out it is yet. But with everything riding on them making contact again, they keep at it.

((As the scene shifts, "Three Weeks Later" appears in subtitles.))

Meanwhile, the Furling armada is about to drop out of hyperspace for the third time since leaving the Milky Way. The combined fleets have been traveling for days, and they need to stop and get a fix on their position relative to their home galaxy so they can continue the journey. On the flagship, Admiral Lagos finishes a conversation with a few aides, then gives the command, and the armada reappears in normal space far, far from home.

According to navigational readouts, they're about to pass the fifth galactic cluster out from the Milky Way, and this would officially put them farther than any Alliance vessel has gone before. But just as Lagos prepares to open a channel to the other lead vessels, the sensors light up; they're not alone. Three contacts are showing up on the edge of the area, near a grouping of small asteroids rocketing toward the Pegasus Galaxy. Interested, and curious, the Furlings dispatch a squadron of fightercraft to investigate.

Almost as soon as the Furling ships come into range of the asteroids, though, a flurry of green plasma bolts whizzes their way, forcing the fighters to barrelroll out of the way. Three small frigates of an alien design are waiting them, targeting the two dozen fighters and opening up with everything they've got. The Furling ships are faster, though, and are able to evade most of the fire and get within range to open up with their own weaponry.

((A battle ensues for a few minutes, with neither side gaining much of anything.))

Then the three alien vessels turn away, moving away from the battle. On the Furling flagship, Admiral Lagos tells his fighters to give chase, but is silenced as, suddenly, two dozen cruiser-sized vessels drop out of hyperspace to support the trio of frigates. The design of these new arrivals seems familiar, but different enough not to be placed, and they easily annhiliate the fighter squadron with their combined fire, then turning their attention to the Furling armada waiting in the background. Lagos tells his officers to begin moving the ships out of the area, but two more clusters of enemy ships suddenly drop out of hyperspace to their right and rear, cutting off the attempted escape.

Just as the Furlings realize that they're completely boxed in (with more alien vessels arriving by the second), the enemy opens a channel. Admiral Lagos has it put onscreen, and the sadistic-looking face of a Der'kal commander appears. On his own vessel, the alien warrior smiles viciously, and turns to a nearby te'kal, saying, "I believe... we have found it." The second alien nods, then turns to the screen and demands that Lagos surrender immediately. Unfortunately, the Furlings cannot understand the Der'kal language, and, as such, are unable to respond or comply in a meaningful way. Angered, the te'kal simply orders the armada destroyed, and the alien vessels open fire on the Furling ships at once, pummeling their shields with plasma.

But Lagos refuses to be destroyed, not here, and tells his First Officer to alert the fleet; they're going to make their stand here. They may be outcasts from the Milky Way, but these aliens cannot be allowed to continue heading in its direction. With more and more Der'kal ships arriving at every turn, the Furlings fire back, determined to slug it out to the bitter end...

((The scene now returns to the present, with Daniel closing out of the last log, looking somewhat disappointed. NOTE: SG-1 and Talbot do not know, and nor does anyone else, that the aliens encountered by the Furlings were the Der'kal.))

Dr. Talbot asks why he stopped reading; what happened to the Furling fleet? Did the Alliance continue with their efforts to find them? How did it end? After all, all they know is the part of the story as told by the Alterans, Nox, and Asgard. Any information seen about the Furlings and their encounter with an alien armada is known only to the viewer, as the Alliance logs could never have known what happened out past the Milky Way. With that, Vala stands up, stretching, and says it was an interesting story nonetheless. But Daniel stays sitting, asking himself just what happened to the lost Furling race, and what they must have encountered.

Just then, another log opens without Daniel touching his computer, and a set of hyperspace coordinates appear onscreen. Mitchell asks what just happened, and Carter checks the diagnostic panel; according to the computer itself, this file was buried under several dozen layers of encryption, and it was working on cracking the code while SG-1 was reading the others. But now it's finished, and is revealed to be a final transmission sent back from the Furling fleet. No one ever knew it existed, though, because, according to the computer, the file arrived at Heliopolis almost two-hundred thousand years ago, long after it had been abandoned by the Alliance.

As the team stands staring at the screen, Carter says what they're all no doubt thinking; if the past two-hundred thousand years held no surprises, the Furlings are still out there... waiting for them.

      ((To Be Continued...))

                    Mostly speculation.

But it's the configuration followed in "The Tower", since the Ancients only had one gate per world, it makes sense. I'd say the reason Atlatnis has a gate is the safety of the intergalactic dial crystal.

[The DER'KAL catches his staff with her sword, then twists the blade so the shooting end of the JAFFA's weapon is sliced clean off. Then she spins around and catches TEAL'C's shoulder with the sword, spraying blood everywhere and knocking him against a wall.]

                            FEMALE DER'KAL:
                            (viciously)
                            Your time has ended, infidel!

                            ANNOUNCER:
